Book Synopsis MANAGING NATURAL RESOURCES by : HARIKESH N. MISRA
Download or read book MANAGING NATURAL RESOURCES written by HARIKESH N. MISRA and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-03-13 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural resource management and sustainable development has, of late, assumed great importance, especially because of ecological crisis and environmental dangers which are looming large. Today the issues related to natural resource exploitation, consequences, their conservation, preservation and management leading to sustainable development have become the major thrust areas of teaching and research. Also, sustainability of natural resources, especially water and land resources, and their efficient use is one of the core programmes of Government of India’s Twelfth Five Year Plan (2012–2017) for strategic development; this objective can only be achieved if the resources are used judiciously. Although land and water resources—the focus of the present book—are vital for human survival and development, unfortunately both are under threat and are increasing strain worldwide. These resources have wide and significantly varying implications in rural and urban settlements, especially in India, where population has been continuously growing and, therefore, the demand of land and water is intensifying. This has necessitated urgent need for reviewing the availability of land and water resources and their conservation. Besides dealing with the theoretical aspects, this compendium presents case studies on natural resources as well, which reveal ground realities at micro and meso levels too. Pedagogical features like maps, diagrams, satellite imageries and latest database of the primary and secondary nature distinguish this book from other works on the subject. The book will be of immense use to postgraduate students and research scholars of geography and related disciplines such as rural–urban studies and environmental science. The thematic approach of the book provides reasonably good contents for cogitation to researchers. Policy makers, planners and academicians may also be benefitted while framing futuristic norms which may lead to sustainable development—the ultimate goal. AUDIENCE• Postgraduate students and Research Scholars of Geography.• Policy makers, Planners and Academicians
Book Synopsis Source-to-Sink Fluxes in Undisturbed Cold Environments by : Achim A. Beylich
Download or read book Source-to-Sink Fluxes in Undisturbed Cold Environments written by Achim A. Beylich and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amplified climate change and ecological sensitivity of polar and cold climate environments are key global environment issues. Understanding how projected climate change will alter surface environments in these regions is only possible when present day source-to-sink fluxes can be quantified. The book provides the first global synthesis and integrated analysis of environmental drivers and quantitative rates of solute and sedimentary fluxes in cold environments, and the likely impact of projected climate change. The focus on largely undisturbed cold environments allows ongoing climate change effects to be detected and, moreover, distinguished from anthropogenic impacts. A novel approach for co-ordinated and integrative process geomorphic research is introduced to enable better comparison between studies. This highly topical and multidisciplinary book, which includes case studies covering Arctic, Antarctic, and alpine environments, will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in the fields of geomorphology, sedimentology and global environmental change.

Book Synopsis Natural Environment and Culture in the Mediterranean Region II by : Ibrahim Atalay
Download or read book Natural Environment and Culture in the Mediterranean Region II written by Ibrahim Atalay and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediterranean Basin is the largest of the five Mediterranean-climate regions, and one of the largest archipelagos in the world. The basin is located at the intersection of two major landmasses, Eurasia and Africa; and has around five thousand islands, which contribute much to its high diversity and spectacular scenery. It possesses higher salinity than the Atlantic. The shores are chiefly mountainous. Earthquakes and volcanic disturbances are frequent. Some of the most ancient civilizations flourished around the region. Carthagians, Greeks, Sicilians, and Romans were rivals for dominance of its shores and trade. The basin virtually became a Roman lake under the Roman Empire. Later, the region was dominated by the Byzantines and the Arabs. The development of the northern regions of Africa and of oil fields in the Middle East has increased its trade. The flora is dramatic with over 20 thousand endemic vascular plant taxa, and many endemic species of animals. Fish (about 400 species), sponges, and corals are plentiful. The touristic activities are threatening populations of many species. The fragmentation and isolation is increasing due to resort development and infrastructure. The overuse of the sea's natural and marine resources continues to be a problem. The Mediterranean monk-seal, the barbary macaque and the Iberian lynx, which is Critically Endangered, are among the region’s imperiled species.

Book Synopsis Geomorphology by : Robert S. Anderson
Download or read book Geomorphology written by Robert S. Anderson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-17 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a modern, quantitative and process-oriented approach to equip students with the tools to understand geomorphology. Insight into the interpretation of landscapes is developed from basic principles and simple models, and by stepping through the equations that capture the essence of the mechanics and chemistry of landscapes. Boxed worked examples and real-world applications bring the subject to life for students, allowing them to apply the theory to their own experience. The book covers cutting edge topics, including the revolutionary cosmogenic nuclide dating methods and modeling, highlights links to other Earth sciences through up-to-date summaries of current research, and illustrates the importance of geomorphology in understanding environmental changes. Setting up problems as a conservation of mass, ice, soil, or heat, this book arms students with tools to fully explore processes, understand landscapes, and to participate in this rapidly evolving field.

Book Synopsis Water, Cryosphere, and Climate Change in the Himalayas by : Ajay Kumar Taloor
Download or read book Water, Cryosphere, and Climate Change in the Himalayas written by Ajay Kumar Taloor and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-24 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book summarizes numerous research studies on remote sensing and GIS of natural resource management for the Himalaya region done by Indian Institutions and Universities over the last decade. It gives an overview of hydrometeorological studies on Himalayan water resources and addresses concerns in the development of water resources in this region, which is dealing with an increased pressure in population, industrialization and economic development. While the source of some of the major rivers of India are found in the Himalayas, the glaciers and water bodies in the region are continuously shrinking leading to a depletion of water and deterioration of water quality. This is affecting a population of up to 2.5 billion people. The ecosystems have been under threat due to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, expansion of agriculture and settlement, overexploitation of natural resources, habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, mining, construction of roads and large dams, and unplanned tourism. Spaceborne remote sensing with its ability to provide synoptic and repetitive coverage has emerged as a powerful tool for assessment and monitoring of the Himalayan resources and phenomena. This work serves as a resource to students, researchers, scientists, professionals, and policy makers both in India and on a global level.
