Book excerpt: This study explored how problem student behavior prompts relationships, as perceived by students, teachers and administrators. It also researched and documented the resources used to implement individual, classroom and school-wide behavioral interventions. Current conceptualizations suggest that successful intervention cannot be one-dimensional in nature but must consist of cooperative interactions that promote emotional support, reward competence, and also promote self-esteem (Ajzen, 2011a; Bandura, 1977; SYoon, 2002). This study was guided by the following three research questions: 1. What contributes to problem student behaviors, as perceived by administrators, faculty, and students? 2. How does problem student behavior impact relationships in a school community, as perceived by administrators, faculty, and students? 3. What strategies, practices, or use of responses could better support students identified as evidencing problem behavior, as perceived by students, teachers, and administrators? This study used a multi-site focus group method at three similar public middle schools. Both Bandura's theory of efficacy and Ajzen's theory of planned behavior served as the theoretical lenses to guide this research project. Many significant themes emerged from this research. Of note was that students engaged more in academics when teachers and administrators are perceived as caring. Lack of student academic comprehension influenced problem student behavior. Lastly, the inconsistent delivery of pro-social programs negatively affected positive relationships among stakeholders in a middle school setting.

As a result of this research, teachers' perceptions about students' social media usage, its relationship to social connectedness, and how it affects their ability to teach may be better understood.

Book excerpt: Spanning over the course of two decades, educational leaders have invested government finances into the social-emotional needs of adolescents, validating the concern of these specific educational needs. Government programs provide student questionnaires to survey the scholastic climate from students' perception. Previous research discusses the correlation between students' perception and their success in school due to fulfillment of their transescent needs. This research study ventured to distinguish a possible correlation between urban middle school students' perspective of feeling "cared-for" and their intrinsic motivation. The study surveyed eleven hundred adolescents in grades six through eight from Austintown Middle School. The students completed a survey which inquired about their perceptions. The first part of the survey was acquired from the Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) and the second part of the survey to measure their intrinsic motivation was acquired from the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS). The outcomes and interventions for school districts were discussed. There was statistical significance with students feeling cared for and having a similar or higher perception of their intelligence in comparison to their peers. There was also statistical significance within a positive correlation between how students perceive their academic environment and their intrinsic motivation. There was not statistical significance between socioeconomics and intrinsic motivation; student engagement leading to intrinsic motivation was a stronger factor.

Book excerpt: The use of a multi-tiered system of supports framework has been of growing interest in addressing issues related to disruptive behaviors and school suspensions. The purpose of this mixed-methods sequential, explanatory study was to examine middle school teachers’ perceptions (behavioral expectations defined, behavioral expectations taught, and an ongoing system for rewarding behavioral expectations) of their efforts toward implementing Schoolwide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports with fidelity in two middle schools within an urban school district located in Georgia. Data analyses included descriptive statistics, homogeneity of variance Levene’s test, t-tests, factorial analysis, a one-way analysis of variance, post-hoc tests, frequencies and percentages of suspension, and coding to discover themes from focus group responses. Findings were that teacher participants who were SWPBIS members were assumed were assumed to be more knowledgeable and to know more about policy knew more about policy and procedures than non-SWPBIS members. The results indicated that there was statistically significant difference in years of full-time teaching experience between 6 – 10 years and 11 to 15 years and between 11 to 15 years and more than 20 years. In-school and out-of-school suspensions in M. N. Middle School were less than those in C. M. Middle School to a statistically significant degree, and students received fewer suspensions. Focus group findings showed that the majority of participants held high expectations for student behavior. A review of the results implied that schools with increased disruptive behaviors and suspensions may be motivated to adopt a discipline program. The implications for positive social change are dependent on middle school teachers effectively using SWPBIS with fidelity to improve students’ behavior.

Through semi-structured interviews, announced observations, and a focus group, data was gathered to ascertain the essence of teachers’ lived experience both personal and occupational with social-emotional learning. Data was analyzed through phenomenological reduction, memoing and coding, and rich-thick description.

This study is important because it helps to develop an understanding of how the cultivation of sense of community is related to job satisfaction and provides insight in middle school urban learning environments. This study examined the relationship between sense of community and job satisfaction where social interaction occurs in an educational setting. The theories guiding this research were McMillan and Chavis’ sense of community theory as it relates to sense of community and Maslow’s theory of hierarchal needs as it relates to job satisfaction. The sample size for this research included 113 middle school teachers from an urban school district located in northeast Georgia. The participants were surveyed using the Sense of Community Scale (SCI-2) as the predictor variable and the Job Satisfaction Scale (JSS) as the criterion variable. In examining the relationship between two variables, a bivariate regression was used to determine if sense of community was a predictor for job satisfaction. Based on the data collected within this study, urban middle school teachers’ sense of community was found to predict their level of job satisfaction. Suggestion for future research includes additional research on how teachers’ sense of community impacts traits including attrition, self-efficacy, and student performances and how moderating variables such as online learning platforms and school safety relate to job satisfaction. Future research should also include exploring other theoretical models that could provide some valuable insights and consider how these constructs operate in a more diverse context.
