Book excerpt: Author's abstract: This qualitative study explores how fourth-grade girls at a high-achieving elementary school construct their mathematics self-beliefs by describing participants’ sources of mathematics self-efficacy experiences, perceptions of mathematical gender stereotypes, and social influences on mathematics and gender beliefs. Qualitative and quantitative methods are guided by a feminist constructivist perspective, including a focus group interview, individual interviews, and a mathematics self-efficacy scale. Major findings are that the participants have high mathematics self-efficacy and feel most confident in their task-specific mathematics abilities. Other findings are that mastery experiences are primarily positive and informed by practicing, grades, pacing, and nonstandard ways of math engagement; vicarious experiences are positive and verbal experiences shared are limited. Finally, for the participants, physiological experiences include feeling nervous, interpreted as a positive/energizing factor; they do not view mathematics as a male domain; they are encouraged to adhere to traditional rule-following “good girl” behavior in mathematics, and their mothers are highly involved and model positive mathematics engagement. The combination of constructivist and feminist theories informing this study provides an analysis that adds to feminist work, capturing girls’ experiences and voices. Practitioners will have a better understanding of girls’ mathematics self-beliefs and the need for more feminist constructivist practices, including shared classroom authority, collaboration, and emphasis on the development of girls’ mathematical voices and personal construction of mathematics.

Book excerpt: This quantitative, quasi-experimental study examined the relationships between self-efficacy and reading achievement as mediated by an online instructional delivery system called MobyMax® over a period of time between a pretest and a posttest. The sources of self-efficacy were also investigated for the individual contribution of each of the four sources; process accomplishments or mastery experiences, vicarious experience, verbal persuasion, and physiological states. Finally, the current study explored the relationships across gender and ethnicity (White, Black, Hispanic, and other). Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to organize the data using a mixed factorial ANOVA to analyze the interventions’ and time factor’s impact on reading self-efficacy and reading achievement. A multiple regression was used to calculate the individual contribution of the four sources of self-efficacy on reading achievement, and a t-test to identify the mean differences across gender. Finally, a One-way ANOVA was used to identify the variance across ethnicities. One statistically significant finding was the mean differences between males and females in reading achievement on both the pretest as well as the posttest. All other findings were not statistically significant. MobyMax® was not shown to make a statistically significant difference, positive or negative, in reading achievement or self-efficacy. More research needs to be conducted to examine the relationship of self-efficacy and achievement in the elementary years.

Bandura (1997) describes perceived self-efficacy as "not a measure of the skills one has but a belief about what one can do under different sets of conditions with whatever skills one possesses" (p. 37). Attitudes in the educational setting represent a desired outcome relative to a specific target (McCoach, Gable, & Madura, 2013). Efficacy and attitudes continue to influence educational attainments (Bandura, 1997). This sequential mixed-methods study explored grade 5 students' mathematical self-efficacy and enjoyment, after implementing a 10-week journal writing treatment. The research questions were: 1. Is there a difference between students exposed to journal writing and not exposed, after controlling for initial differences on the pre-test, with respect to: mathematical self-efficacy and enjoyment? 2. Is there a difference between male and female students, after controlling for initial differences on the pre-test, with respect to: mathematical self-efficacy and enjoyment? 3. Is there an interaction between gender and treatment group, after controlling for initial differences on the pre-test, with respect to: mathematical self-efficacy and enjoyment? 4. How do grade 5 students in the treatment group respond to journal writing prompts regarding affective/attitudinal and dispositions in the content of mathematics? 5. Book excerpt: This dissertation was designed to examine whether fourth-grade students who received instruction in a self-contained setting were more likely to meet their target score on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test than students who were taught in a departmentalized setting. Fourth-grade students in ALPHA School District took the MAP test in the fall and spring of the academic calendar year. Target scores were originated by the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA). These target scores showed the typical growth for a student in the particular grade level as calculated by national norms. The MAP test growth norms were very precise. Due to the enormous number of students involved in the norming study, NWEA staff was able to calculate the mean growth of similar groups of students from each grade level (2–10) who scored at each RIT level in the initial testing season. For this study, the researcher focused on students in the fourth grade. -- Fourth-grade students from ALPHA School District were tested in the fall of 2015 and the spring of 2016. Scores of students taking both tests were obtained and categorized into two groups: self-contained and departmentalized. Once this process was completed, the researcher analyzed the target scores to determine whether or not there were significant differences in scores of self-contained and departmentalized classrooms. Teacher participants were asked to respond to a collection of survey questions to determine which factors were key contributors to students finding success in the math program in their classroom structure (self-contained, departmentalized). The researcher followed up by utilizing a group of volunteer interview participants to partake in a brief interview based on the findings to determine the identifiable cultural classroom differences in environments in comparing self-contained and departmentalized settings. -- An analysis of the data determined that all students grew equally well regardless of their target growth and classroom structure. Through a survey, it was determined that self-contained teachers place the highest importance on the factors of human relationships and individualized instruction, while departmentalized teachers place their importance in engaging lessons and content specialization. It was discovered that teachers are better when they teach toward their strengths; that math is most effectively taught in a structured environment where routines are evident; and the value in the importance of engaging students with relevant, creative instruction.

Amidst changes in pedagogy, curricula, and standards, what is most important is the belief that students can achieve high levels of math. Mathematical attainment is related to positive math self-efficacy and the use of mathematical practices. This experimental design study aimed to analyze the effects of a six-week intervention on students’ math self-efficacy, practices, and achievement in grades four through six. The following research questions guided the study: RQ1. What effect does the intervention have on students’ math self-efficacy? RQ2. What effect does the intervention have on students’ math practices? RQ3. What effect does the intervention have on students’ math achievement? RQ4. What other student variables moderate the effects of the intervention (i.e., gender, grade level, teacher)? Study results indicated that students in the intervention group reported higher than average gains on the MSE and the SMP than the control group. However, the higher gains on these two measures were not statistically significant. Additionally, the control group’s average increase on the STAR math assessment was higher than the intervention groups but also not statistically significant. These findings provide a practical application for teachers to improve students’ math self-efficacy but suggest additional studies to expand the body of research and the potential benefits of such interventions to math education, teachers, and students alike.

Book excerpt: Critical filters are events that affect academics and which prevent young people from pursuing careers in fields related to mathematics and science. Self-efficacy was the research tool used to investigate what events in the lives of adolescents could be termed critical filters. The mathematics self-efficacy (MSE) of student-parent pairs was measured using the MSES-R (n = 104). Following the survey, eight student-parent pairs were selected to be interviewed based upon its results. The most significant finding during both phases of the research was the vital role that parents play in the formation of the beliefs that students form about mathematics. A measure of student self-efficacy was regressed against eight predictor variables. The most parsimonious model included parent mathematics self-efficacy (PSE), GPA, change in GPA (GPC) and a variable for a state-wide standardized mathematics test (OPT). This model accounted for 32.6% of the variance. Two tracking variables and the demographic variables of race and sex were included. Neither the tracking nor the demographics variables contributed significantly to self-efficacy. Eight student-parent pairs were selected to be interviewed. During the qualitative portion, the influences of performance and parents were confirmed and explored. Students with high MSE were found to have strong math support networks and to have parents who were more confident about and involved in the mathematics experiences of their children. Tracking decisions in mathematics become critical filters for students of high MSE whereas the minimum competency high stakes test was a critical filter for low MSE students. Neither gender nor race contributed significantly to the self-beliefs of these adolescents. The sample had an even mix of Blacks and Whites where socioeconomic status was moderately well controlled. Often studies in this area have had socioeconomic status as confounding variable when making racial comparisons. Recommendations for schools and teachers are included.
