But the disturbing reality is that debt, unemployment, and politically charged pseudo learning are more likely outcomes for many college students today than full-time employment and time-honored knowledge. This raises the question: is college still worth it? Who is responsible for debt-saddled, undereducated students, and how do future generations of students avoid the same problems? In a time of economic uncertainty, what majors and schools will produce competitive graduates? Is College Worth It? uses personal experience, statistical analysis, and real-world interviews to provide answers to some of the most troubling social and economic problems of our time.

This book was released on 2020-03-20 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Also known as free tuition and free college programs, college promise programs are an emerging approach for increasing higher education attainment of people in particular places. To maximize the effectiveness of their efforts and investments, program leaders and policymakers need research-based evidence to inform program design, implementation, and evaluation. With the goal of addressing this knowledge need, this volume presents a collection of research studies that examine several categories and variations of college promise programs. These theoretically grounded empirical investigations use varied data sources and analytic techniques to examine the effects of college promise programs that have different design features and operate in different places. Individually and collectively, the results of these studies have implications for the design and implementation of promise programs if these programs are to create meaningful improvements in attainment for people from underserved groups. The authors efforts also provide a useful foundation for the next generation of college promise research.

Book excerpt: American higher education is increasingly in trouble. Costs are too high, learning is too little, and underemployment abounds post-graduation. Universities are facing an uncertain and unsettling future with free speech suppression, out-of-control Federal student aid programs, soaring administrative costs, and intercollegiate athletics mired in corruption. Restoring the Promise explores these issues and exposes the federal government's role in contributing to them. With up-to-date discussions of the most recent developments on university campuses, this book is the most comprehensive assessment of universities in recent years, and one that decidedly rejects conventional wisdom. Book Synopsis The Meritocratic Promise of Classical Liberalism by : Peter Wedekind
Download or read book The Meritocratic Promise of Classical Liberalism written by Peter Wedekind and published by Verlag Traugott Bautz. This book was released on with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era of Market Triumphalism, this book follows the quest to address a myriad of prominent socio-economic pathologies in Western democracies – such as skyrocketing financial inequality, marketization, hereditary privileges, as well as dysfunctional types of merit-based justice – without surrendering their liberal foundation altogether in favor of an entirely different political framework. The author argues that classical liberalism should be regarded as a valuable doctrine worth keeping, and that the liberal tradition is not inevitably destined to succumb into the neoliberal and increasingly plutocratic as well as nepotistic manifestation responsible for the growing discontentment with the ‘liberal order’ during the past approximately four decades. Instead, the meritocratic promise inherent to classical liberalism must be taken more serious as a principle of justice and efficiency which – in turn – should be instrumentalized as an imperative for the provision of substantially greater equality of opportunity. The argument culminates in an advocacy for significantly higher levels of state regulations – for example via taxation to make higher education accessible to all sufficiently talented students independent of their family background – based on the claim that such interventions are justified if they bring about the levelled playing field necessary to a genuine meritocracy. Correspondingly, the author proposes policies more frequently associated with the postulates of social welfare egalitarians, however, he does so exclusively from within the pond of classical liberal principles.

Book Synopsis The Promise Keepers by : Dane S. Claussen
Download or read book The Promise Keepers written by Dane S. Claussen and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2000 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now nearly 15 years old (during which time it exploded in size, then declined and has now plateaued), the Promise Keepers and its policies have invited reactions ranging from celebration to suspicion. Many see the Christian men's organization as a powerful tool to encourage and equip Christian men to face a morally complex future. Others view the group as sexist or even heretical. This book was the first, and in most ways still the only, objective analysis of the Promise Keepers and the many reactions to it. Contributors to this collection of critical essays hail from the fields of political science, history, sociology, religion and theology, journalism and mass communication, speech, English, women's studies, American studies, and sports science. The responses range from supportive to skeptical and cover topics that go beyond the Promise Keepers to issues of evangelical Christianity, gender roles, men's organizations, mass media, and social movements.
