Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the largest Michigan county with land and water combined, Keweenaw County is also the most sparsely populatedat least during the vicious winters. The population blooms in the summertime when seasonal residents come in droves to enjoy their little slice of heaven. The county was formed in 1861 as an offshoot of Houghton County and now encompasses the top half of the Keweenaw Peninsula, where Michigans Upper Peninsula juts north into Lake Superior. Throughout the 1800s, the area was at the center of the copper mining boom, spurring construction of Fort Wilkins in Copper Harbor. The military outpost served to keep order among miners and the areas native inhabitants, the Ojibwa. Moving through time, Keweenaw County would also serve as a hub for the maritime, fishing, and lumbering industries before becoming the resort community it is today.

Book excerpt: What would you do if your faith was put to the test; everything you believed in was turned upside down; and you suddenly found yourself under arrest and on trial for the crime of being a Catholic? Would there be enough evidence to convict you? The Prosecutor of Michigan's remote Keweenaw County thought so. In 2010, following the process set forth by the United States Council of Catholic Bishops, a father trustingly made a report of attempted sexual abuse by a monk of a Ukrainian monastery on behalf of his young daughter, with the Ukrainian Catholic Diocese of St. Nicholas in Chicago. What happened after that has been said to be one of the most documented cases of religious persecution of a Catholic in America in recent history. With the suspense of a detective novel, FRAMED shares victim-author Tim Schoonard's incredible true story; chronicling the events surrounding his arrest and criminal prosecution in Keweenaw County, after he was framed for extortion by Ukrainian Catholic Church officials in what was revealed to be an elaborate attempt to cover up misconduct complaints against one of their clergy. Being betrayed or injured by trusted Church leaders can often lead to blaming the entire Catholic Church for the evil actions of a few. Standing together against overwhelming odds, in a remarkable testimony to faith and family, Tim Schoonard shares his family's struggles with faith, the long and difficult road to healing, and the decisions they made to stay firmly Catholic. Against the backdrop of the real-life courtroom drama, FRAMED gives witness to how times like these can reveal for those who seek it, God's manifest mercy, grace, and blessings in ways we would never expect.
Book Synopsis Strangers and Sojourners by : Arthur W. Thurner
Download or read book Strangers and Sojourners written by Arthur W. Thurner and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur Thurner tells of the enormous struggle of the diverse immigrants who built and sustained energetic towns and communities, creating a lively civilization in what was essentially a forest wilderness. Their story is one of incredible economic success and grim tragedy in which mine workers daily risked their lives. By highlighting the roles women, African Americans, and Native Americans played in the growth of the Keweenaw community, Thurner details a neglected and ignored past. The history of Keweenaw Peninsula for the past one hundred and fifty years reflects contemporary American culture--a multicultural, pluralistic, democratic welfare state still undergoing evolution. Strangers and Sojourners, with its integration of social and economic history, for the first time tells the complete story of the people from the Keweenaw Peninsula's Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties.

Book Synopsis The Geography of Presidential Elections in the United States, 1868-2004 by : Albert J. Menendez
Download or read book The Geography of Presidential Elections in the United States, 1868-2004 written by Albert J. Menendez and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work concentrates on the longstanding and significant factors of regionalism and sectionalism in the voting for the U.S. chief executive. Even after the Civil War restored the nation's wholeness, the first postwar election showed the persistence of regional voting patterns. These patterns became even more pronounced in the succeeding elections of the 19th century and beyond. For the 35 presidential elections from 1868 to 2004, a narrative describes how the regions, states, and, in some instances, counties responded to the issues and personalities of the presidential contest. The geography of each election reveals how the party coalitions were developed. Realignments can be traced to regional appeals. In addition to the narrative, coverage for each election includes a table of the electoral vote, a map showing how the nation voted, and a table indicating where the parties received their highest level of support. The second part of the book is a series of charts showing which party carried each United States county in each election during this period. These charts reveal at a glance which counties reliably voted Republican or Democratic over the years?and which ones became ?breakthrough counties? where the opposition party first convinced the electorate that it should break with the past in a particular election. Such information, previously unavailable without extensive searching through dozens of diverse sources, is crucial to an understanding of how geography has affected elections over the years.
