Book excerpt: Theories for axisymmetric viscous interaction are extended to include arbitrary values of the ratios of both surface to free-stream pressure and boundary-layer to body thickness, by identification of a new measure of transverse curvature in the boundary layer. Methods for four limit flows are isolated. Two of the methods are existing solutions for cones with either a strong shock wave or very thin boundary layer. One is a new local solution for general, very thin bodies; it becomes exact when the pressure ratio approaches one or is unbounded. The fourth is a local similarity solution for power-law bodies with linearizable small-disturbance flow; it becomes exact when the ratio of boundary-layer to body thickness vanishes or is unbounded. These methods have provided interpolated estimates of pressure on a very slender cone-cylinder in hypersonic flow that compare well with original experimental data. Similar predictions of heat transfer rate compare poorly. (Author).

Book excerpt: Local-similarity methods suitable for flows with axisymmetric hypersonic viscous interaction are provided for three limit flows. The first method is for flow with a strong shock wave over sharp or hollow cylinders; this compares with an existing solution for cones and 3/4 power-law bodies. The second is a new local solution for general, very thin bodies; it becomes exact when the pressure ratio approaches 1 or is unbounded. The third, for power-law bodies with linearized inviscid flow, becomes exact when the ratio of boundary-layer to body thickness vanishes or is unbounded. Together with classical results for very thin boundary layers, these diverse methods provide interpolated estimates of pressure and heat transfer rate on a very slender cone-cylinder in hypersonic flow that compare well with original experimental data. Book excerpt: Hypersonic Flow Theory presents the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, focusing on the hypersonic flow theory and approaches in theoretical aerodynamics. This book discusses the assumptions underlying hypersonic flow theory, unified supersonic-hypersonic similitude, two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies, and circular cylinder. The constant-streamtube-area approximation, streamtube-continuity methods, and tangent-wedge and tangent-cone are also deliberated. This text likewise covers the similar laminar boundary layer solutions, bluntness induced interactions on slender bodies, and free molecule transfer theory. The dynamics of hypersonic flight or hypersonic wing theory, magnetohydrodynamic theory, or any developments involving treatment of the Boltzmann equation are not included. This publication is intended for hypersonic aerodynamicists, students, and researchers conducting work on the hypersonic flow phenomena.

Book excerpt: Stewartson's theory for axisymmetric hypersonic flow of a model gas with strong viscous interaction and strong shock wave is extended to power-law viscosity variation, nonunit Prandtl number, and body shapes other than power laws. For power-law bodies, the generalized theory is obtained in closed form without recourse to numerical integration. In addition, numerical computations are presented for axisymmetric flow over a three-quarter power-law body with strong shock wave and viscous interactions that range from weak to strong. (Author).

Book excerpt: The investigation is a first step to the study of the effect of cross flow in laminar separation at supersonic speeds. It is related to the selection of a final axi-symmetric model. Several problems were examined. First, the effect of streamwise vortices that develop systematically in laminar reattaching flows, triggered by small irregularities in the leading edge thickness. Second, the choice of the diameter of the model such that the flow resembles that of an equivalent planar body, third the programming of Lees-Reeves theory on a 1130 IBM computer to perform a parametric study and finally the development of a new accurate technique or criteria to ascertain that fully laminar shock wave boundary layer interactions can be obtained. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an investigation of hypersonic laminar boundary-layer/shock-wave interactions using the method of MacCormack to solve the time-dependent compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Comparisons of the numerical solutions with experimental data were made to ascertain the validity of the numerical method and to identify regions of anomalous behavior. The algorithm gave good results when applied to hypersonic laminar interactions that caused either small or no separated regions and marginal performance when applied to hypersonic laminar interactions having large regions of separated flow. The extents of the separated regions in interactions having large regions of separated flow were underpredicted when compared with experimental data. The predicted wall heat-transfer rates exhibited the correct qualitative trend but not the experimentally measured quantitative values. Consideration of the effects of needed stabilizing terms as well as grid resolution suggests inadequate mesh spacing in the longitudinal direction as the cause of the aforementioned anomalies. If inadequate mesh spacing (and the corresponding lack of support for every term of the Navier-Stokes equations) is a prime cause of the cited discrepancies between the numerical results and the experimental data, then the needed reduction of several orders of magnitude in delta x, would increase CPU time and core storage requirements to untenable levels. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effects of viscous interaction are investigated for hypersonic flow over slender axisymmetric bodies. The entire range of interaction, from weak to strong, is considered for nose bluntness not greater than a 3/4 power law. Extensive numerical results are given for the self-similar flow over a 3/4 power law body. These results are correlated and used in a local similarity procedure for finding viscous interaction over arbitrary body shapes. Analytical expressions are derived for weak interaction on a cone and strong interaction on power law bodies. Following Dewey's approach, the local similarity procedure is simplified to a series of algebraic equations. These are solved for flow of air over a cone. Numerical results are presented for cone surface pressure, shear, heat transfer, drag and displacement thickness in all interaction regimes. The drag is in good average agreement with available experimental cone drag data. The analytical development is a unified treatment of viscous interaction effects on two-dimensional as well as axisymmetric bodies. Numerical results for wedges are included. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report describes a theoretical and experimental investigation of the properties of attached and separated regions of shock wave-laminar boundary layer interacting in the strong interaction regime. The flow is studied over a flat plate-wedge compression surface in the high Mach number, low Reynolds number regime where the interaction between the viscous and inviscid regions over the basic flat plate is strong and of fundamental importance to the problem. The theoretical analysis treats the development of the viscous layer and its interaction with the external inviscid stream, using an integral representation for the boundary layer equations. A complementary experimental study investigated the flow over a flat plate-wedge compression surface for a range of free-stream Reynolds number and Mach number conditions in the strong interaction regime.

Book excerpt: Interdisciplinary and Advanced Topics in Science and Engineering, Volume 3: Separation of Flow presents the problem of the separation of fluid flow. This book provides information covering the fields of basic physical processes, analyses, and experiments concerning flow separation. Organized into 12 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the flow separation on the body surface as discusses in various classical examples. This text then examines the analytical and experimental results of the laminar boundary layer of steady, two-dimensional flows in the subsonic speed range. Other chapters consider the study of flow separation on the two-dimensional body, flow separation on three-dimensional body shape and particularly on bodies of revolution. This book discusses as well the analytical solutions of the unsteady flow separation. The final chapter deals with the purpose of separation flow control to raise efficiency or to enhance the performance of vehicles and fluid machineries involving various engineering applications. This book is a valuable resource for engineers.

Book excerpt: A theory is presented for the combined effects of mass transfer and viscous interaction on the hypersonic flow of a perfect gas in the limit where the body is vanishingly thin compared with an adjacent, single-species laminar boundary layer. The body temperature and a mass transfer parameter F must both be constant, but arbitrary body profiles are allowed. The results are applicable to porous bodies with nearly uniform mass transfer per unit length and to ablative bodies with a constant effective heat of ablation. The major boundary-layer properties are presented as analytic functions of Prandtl number, specific heat ratio, power-law viscosity power, body enthalpy ratio, and mass-transfer parameter. The theory is compared with numerical solutions for a thin body which grows as a three-quarter power law, and it is found to accurately predict the relative effects of mass transfer. (Author).
