Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the helicopter may be traced back to the Chinese flying top (c. 400 BC) and to the work of Leonardo da Vinci, who sketched designs for a vertical flight machine utilizing a screw-type propeller. In the late 19th-century, Thomas Edison experimented with helicopter models, realizing that no such machine would be able to fly until the development of a sufficiently lightweight engine. When the internal combustion gasoline engine came on the scene around 1900, the stage was set for the real development of helicopter technology. While this text provides a concise history of helicopter development, its true purpose is to provide the engineering analysis required to design a highly successful rotorcraft. Toward that end the book offers thorough, comprehensive coverage of the theory of helicopter flight: the elements of vertical flight, forward flight, performance, design, mathematics of rotating systems, rotary wing dynamics and aerodynamics, aeroelasticity, stability and control, stall, noise and more. Wayne Johnson has worked for the U.S. Army and NASA at the Ames Research Center in California. Through his company Johnson Aeronautics, he is engaged in the development of software that is used throughout the world for the analysis of rotorcraft. In this book, Dr. Johnson has compiled a monumental resource that is essential reading for any student or aeronautical engineer interested in the design and development of vertical-flight aircraft.

Book Synopsis Stability and Control of Airplanes and Helicopters by : Edward Seckel
Download or read book Stability and Control of Airplanes and Helicopters written by Edward Seckel and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stability and Control of Airplanes and Helicopters deals with aircraft flying qualities that determine the stability and control of airplanes and helicopters. It includes problems based on real aircraft, selected to represent the gamut from simple to complicated, and from conventional utility designs to futuristic research types. Many of these problems involve comparison of theory and experiment to demonstrate their mutual relationship. Comprised of 25 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on the aerodynamics of the component parts related to the lift and moment characteristics of an airplane, including wings and associated accessories; bodies such as fuselages, nacelles, and tip tanks; and control surfaces. The reader is then introduced to some mathematical techniques for linear differential equations; steady flight at different speeds; and stick force and control-free stability. Subsequent chapters focus on flaps and high-lift devices; power and compressibility effects; and the manner in which the aircraft responds to the application of control. Aeroelasticity and longitudinal equations of motion are also examined. This monograph is intended for undergraduate and graduate students taking modern engineering courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report uses as a point of departure the concept that control of bank angle is the primary piloting task in maintaining or changing heading. Regulation of the bank angle to maintain heading is a close-loop tracking task in which the pilot applies aileron control as a function of observed bank angle error. For large heading changes, the steady-state bank angle consistent with available or desired load factor is attained in an open-loop fashion; it is then regulated in a closed-loop fashion throughout the remainder of the turn. For the transient entry and exit from the turn, the pilot is not concerned with bank angle per se, but rather with attaining a mentally commanded bank angle with tolerable accuracy in a reasonable time, and with an easily learned and comfortable program of aileron movements.

Book Synopsis Simulation Study of the Lift-roll Coupling Problem for Hovering VTOL Aircraft by : Robert A. Jacobsen
Download or read book Simulation Study of the Lift-roll Coupling Problem for Hovering VTOL Aircraft written by Robert A. Jacobsen and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of lift-roll coupling on the handling qualities of hovering VTOL aircraft using differential thrust for roll control were assessed in a piloted simulation study in the Ames six-degrees-of-freedom motion simulator. The configuration tested has three vertical thrust sources, one on the roll axis and two laterally displaced from the roll axis, with a thrust distribution of 25/50/25. The outboard thrust sources were modulated to provide roll control whereas all three provided height control. Maximum thrust-to-weight ratio was varied together with a coupling parameter that combined roll-inertia, weight, and engine location. Results showed that handling qualities are affected not only by the occurrence of lift-roll coupling (dependent on both variables) but also by the severity of the coupling (dependent on the coupling parameter alone). However, the advantages of differential thrust for control can be retained with careful design.
