Book excerpt: This chapter presents the features of the Enhanced-Predictive-PR78 equation of state (E-PPR78), a model highly suitable to perform ,Äúphysical fluid screening,Äù in power and refrigeration cycles. It enables, in fact, the accurate and predictive (i.e., without the need for its preliminary optimization by the user) determination of the thermodynamic properties of pure and multicomponent fluids usable in power and refrigeration cycles: hydrocarbons (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, cycloalkane, naphthenic compounds, and so on), permanent gases (such as CO2, N2, H2, He, Ar, O2, NH3, NO2/N2O4, and so on), mercaptans, fluorocompounds, and water. The E-PPR78 equation of state is a developed form of the Peng-Robinson equation of state, which enables both the predictive determination of binary interaction parameters and the accurate calculation of pure fluid and mixture thermodynamic properties (saturation properties, enthalpies, heat capacities, volumes, and so on).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises five chapters on developed research activities on organic Rankine cycles. The first section aims to provide researchers with proper modelling (Chapter 1) and experimental (Chapter 2) tools to calculate and empirically validate thermophysical properties of ORC working fluids. The second section introduces some theoretical and experimental studies of organic Rankine cycles for waste heat recovery applications: a review of different supercritical ORC (Chapter 3), ORC for waste heat recovery from fossil-fired power plants (Chapter 4), the experimental detailed characterization of a small-scale ORC of 3 kW operating with either pure fluids or mixtures (Chapter 5).

Book excerpt: One of the strategies to achieve the target of 32% share of EU energy consumption coming from renewable energy sources (RES) by 2030 is to increase the use of distributed energy systems (DES). The promotion of DES has opened the way to different technologies such as combined heat and power (CHP) or combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) systems. Recently, a novel CCHP cycle, operating with two-phase expanders and compressors, has been designed. Such a cycle enables the development of an all-in-one device capable of producing electric, heating and cooling power with a single working fluid. Among the design challenges of this novel CCHP system, the working fluid selection appears as a key stage of its development. In this thesis a methodology for the selection of promising working fluids for Combined Cooling, Heating and Power (CCHP) applications has been presented. This study has intended to provide an insight about working fluids that should be considered for further theoretical and experimental investigations. A key stage of the development of the proposed methodology relied on the study of cubic equations of state for pure compounds and mixtures in with the purpose of enhancing their accuracy on the estimation of saturation and caloric properties. Throughout this work it has been showed that two major concepts are necessary for the development of cubic equations of state (CEoS): the consistency and volume-translation concepts. The implementation of these concepts along with a sound parameterization method leads to highly accurate CEoS such as the translated-consistent Peng-Robinson (tc-PR) EoS. In order to safely extend CEoS to mixtures addressing the question of mixing rules is capital. The research work of this thesis introduced advanced mixing rules (EoS/a_res) derived by equating the residual part of the excess Helmholtz energy from an EoS and from an explicit activity-coefficient model. Finally, a database search methodology has been implemented to screen about 60 000 species included in the DDB, the DIPPR and the NIST TDE 103b databases. The screening approach considered thermodynamic, process-related, constructional, safety and environmental constraints. The screening coupled with the performance evaluation have demonstrated that fluids such as HFC-152 or HCFO-1233zd(E) have a good potential for CCHP applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The equation of state was originally developed for ideal gases, and proved central to the development of early molecular and atomic physics. Increasingly sophisticated equations of state have been developed to take into account molecular interactions, quantization, relativistic effects, etc.Extreme conditions of matter are encountered both in nature and in the laboratory, for example in the centres of stars, in relativistic collisions of heavy nuclei, in inertial confinement fusion (where a temperature of 109 K and a pressure exceeding a billion atmospheres can be achieved). A sound knowledge of the equation of state is a prerequisite for understanding processes at very high temperatures and pressures, as noted in some recent developments. This book presents a detailed pedagogical account of the equation of state and its applications in several important and fast-growing topics in theoretical physics, chemistry and engineering.

Book excerpt: An equation of state (EOS) is a thermodynamic expression that relates pressure (P), temperature (T), and volume (V). This equation is used to describe the state of reservoir fluids at given conditions. The cubic equations of state (CEOS) such as Van der Waals, Redlich-Kwong, Soave, and Peng-Robinson are simple models that have been widely used in the oil industry. This chapter expressed literature for EOS that varies from simple expressions to multiple constant and convoluted types of equations. Many attempts have been made to describe the thermodynamic behavior of fluids to predict their physical properties at given conditions. So, several forms of the equation of state have been presented to the oil industry in order to calculate reservoir fluid properties. The heat exchanger is important in wildly fields as in aerospace, petrochemical industry, refrigeration, and other fields. The optimization design of the heat exchanger is a great significance to industry process to reduce production cost, realize energy conservation, and reduce energy consumption.
