Book excerpt: This collection investigates various issues of investment and credit that are of importance to any developing economy. It uses micro- and macro-economic data from Ethiopia to analyse such topics as determinants of foreign direct investment, of bank credit and trade credit, microfinance and poverty reduction, and rural credit issues. The book applies sophisticated, state-of-the-art statistical techniques to analyse the data and derive policy recommendations. To the extent that the Ethiopian economy shares many features and policy issues with other developing economies, the text will be of interest to academics working in the field of development economics, and also to policy makers and policy analysts in developing countries and in development agencies throughout the world.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: Masters, Addis Ababa University (National bank of ethiopia), language: English, abstract: The primary objective of this paper was to identify the root causes of the problems and challenges faced by Ethiopian microfinance sector and to, subsequently, recommend remedial measures. In depth interviews have been used to identify and understand the problems and challenges faced by microfinance institutions. This study depicted that Primary cause for all problems is fund shortage and; in turn, the primary cause for fund shortage is insufficient start up equity capital. In addition, ownership structure is identified as supplementary cause of governance problems. Finally, it is recommended that solving these couple of problems is a must to overcome all challenges of the sector as taking measures on other problems is unlikely to provide long-lasting relief from the undesired effect.

Book excerpt: Africa is home to some of the poorest and vulnerable populations in the world. The ten poorest countries in the world are in Africa. Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the highest incidence and greatest depth of poverty in the world. Fewer than one in five adults in Africa has access to the services of a formal or semi-formal financial institution. Microfinance in Africa is growing, though. A broad range of diverse institutions offer financial services to the poor and low-income clients in Africa. These include non-governmental organizations, non-banking financial institutions, cooperatives, credit unions, rural banks, Rotating Savings and Credit Associations (ROSCAs), postal financial institutions and an increasing number of commercial banks. Increasingly, technology is being used to expand microfinance outreach mobile phone banking is one such example. This book provides an overview of the microfinance sector in Africa, reviews the performance and impact of microfinance institutions in the region, and outlines some of the opportunities and challenges that African microfinance has on hand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its emergence in the 1970s, microfinance has risen to become one of the most high-profile policies to address poverty in developing and transition countries. It is beloved of rock stars, movie stars, royalty, high-profile politicians and ‘troubleshooting’ economists. In this provocative and controversial analysis, Milford Bateman reveals that microfinance doesn’t actually work. In fact, the case for it has been largely built on hype, on egregious half-truths and – latterly – on the Wall Street-style greed of those promoting and working in microfinance. Using a multitude of case studies, from India to Cambodia, Bolivia to Uganda, Serbia to Mexico, Bateman demonstrates that microfi nance actually constitutes a major barrier to sustainable economic and social development, and thus also to sustainable poverty reduction. As developing and transition countries attempt to repair the devastation wrought by the global financial crisis, Why Doesn’t Microfinance Work? argues forcefully that the role of microfinance in development policy urgently needs to be reconsidered.

Book excerpt: Micro finance is among major interventions that are being carried out throughout the world particularly following the corridor of poverty - Africa, Asia, and Latin America - as a tool to alleviate poverty. Ethiopia is among few world countries which are currently in fast economic growth. The role of microfinance institutions in the economic growth of the country is very significant. To guide the institutions on the right truck it needs scientific research. Therefore, this research has been carried out to analyse the trend of changes in credit provision, savings mobilization, and geographic and financial accessibility of the institutions to the active poor. Correlation analysis between credit provided and savings mobilized together with predictive regression models are unique parts of this study. The book will have paramount importance to managers of Microfinance institutions, policy makers, donors, creditors, and those who are engaged in providing trainings on microfinance and related issues

By indebting poor people in the Global South, it drives financial expansion and opens new lands of opportunity for the crisis-ridden global capital markets. This book raises fundamental concerns about this widely-celebrated tool for social development.

Book excerpt: Over the last two decades microfinance (MF) has been one of the popular and widely adopted development strategies in the majority world. Despite its popularity and prominence, microfinance has been hotly debated. This thesis critically examines three of these contentious issues, namely microfinance{u2019}s potential to reduce poverty, help build social capital and empower women. The thesis provides an in depth study of MF in Ethiopia, one of the poorest countries of sub-Saharan Africa. Among the microfinance institutions (MFIs) in the country, the thesis focuses on ACSI (the Amhara Credit and Savings Institution), which is located in the Amhara region, one of the poorest regions of Ethiopia. Despite this fact, ACSI has emerged as one of the most successful MFIs in the world. From a theoretical point of view, this thesis primarily utilizes Pierre Bourdieu{u2019}s (1986, 1996, 2000) analysis of social capital, in contrast to Robert Putnam{u2019}s (1993, 2000) understanding of this concept that has been very popular and influential throughout the world. In examining the potential of MF to empower women, the thesis is informed by Bourdieu{u2019}s analysis of class structure, while incorporating feminist critiques of his sociology. With regard to philosophical underpinnings, the study is undertaken from a Bourdieusian and feminist position. Research for this thesis was undertaken during the summers of 2007 and 2008 in both rural and urban contexts, namely the Woredas (districts) of Angolela Tera and Debrebrehane, respectively. While the fieldwork was guided by an ethnographic methodology, observation, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions were utilised as methods of data collection. The study examines MF within the wider socio-economic context of Ethiopia. It locates MF within the broader formal and informal financial facilities prevalent in the country. The research provides a critical analysis of the organisational structure and institutional practices of ACSI that have helped it to emerge as the leading MFI in Africa. The thesis looks at the institutional policy frameworks and day to day operations of the organisation vis-à-vis the cultural ideologies and practices of the people of the Amhara region. The key findings of the thesis revealed that livelihoods for many clients of ACSI were improved through accessing finance, running small businesses and generating incomes. However, it cannot be assumed that credit necessarily expands economic capital. On the contrary, the research showed a significant degree of vulnerability and a further impoverishment for some of the credit clients. Moreover, despite the formation of micro-groups for the delivery of micro-loans and centres for collecting voluntary savings, the research findings suggest that MF in the context of ACSI has played an insignificant role in creating new or expanding the pre-existing forms of networks, links and association (social capital) among micro-group members. Rather than bringing about social integration, ACSI{u2019}s system of credit delivery, which incorporates peer enforcement and monitoring, proved to be a source of conflict among many group members. ACSI{u2019}s role in terms of empowering women has also been limited. Cultural ideologies and practices restrict women{u2019}s mobility and property ownership such as land. Women are restricted from a decision making role over the use of loans, management of loans and income generated. They do not also participate in lucrative markets such as cattle markets. When women engage in running micro-business, their domestic roles are not shared. Despite the potential of centre meetings to empower women, women{u2019}s participation is controlled by men. The study showed that the poorest women are the most discriminated against. The thesis fundamentally deconstructed the common simplistic association of credit provision with poverty reduction, social capital and women{u2019}s empowerment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microfinance has long been considered a development strategy that can correct the failure of the global credit market and address the financial needs of the poor enabling them to create and run profitable business enterprises. The Microfinance Mirage argues that this neo-liberal oriented analysis overemphasises the economic argument whilst ignoring the cultural roots of inequality and subordination. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted among rural credit clients in the Northern region of Ethiopia, Esayas Bekele Geleta provides a nuanced critical analysis of microfinance challenging the common assumption that it facilitates the building of social capital, poverty reduction and the empowerment of women. Making a unique contribution to our further understanding of the microfinance industry the research shows that, in some cases, microfinance can result in the disintegration of pre-existing relationships and in the disruption and destruction of the livelihoods of the poor. Exploring the impact of microfinance in one of the poorest regions of sub-Saharan Africa, this book demonstrates its potential and problems and shows the complex and contradictory social and cultural environments in which projects are often located.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microfinance contracts have proven able to secure high rates of loan repayment in the face of limited liability and information asymmetries, but high repayment rates have not translated easily into profits for most microbanks. Profitability, though, is at the heart of the promise that microfinance can deliver poverty reduction while not relying on ongoing subsidy. The authors examine why this promise remains unmet for most institutions. Using a data set with unusually high quality financial information on 124 institutions in 49 countries, they explore the patterns of profitability, loan repayment, and cost reduction. The authors find that institutional design and orientation matter substantially. Lenders that do not use group-based methods to overcome incentive problems experience weaker portfolio quality and lower profit rates when interest rates are raised substantially. For these individual-based lenders, one key to achieving profitability is investing more heavily in staff costs-a finding consistent with the economics of information but contrary to the conventional wisdom that profitability is largely a function of minimizing cost.
