Book excerpt: Poetically Speaking - An Anthology has been compiled from my 2014 poetry e-books:Curious?/The Little Book Of Holiday Poems/Time For A Coffee Break/It's Christmas! Curious? is a collection of poetry about love, relationships, romance and attitudes to life, its funny and inspiring moments. The Little Book of Holiday Poems is a tantalizingly light hearted look at holidays/vacations and travel using acrostic poetry. Think sun, sea, sand...and snow. Time For A Coffee Break is ideal for a tea/coffee break, for time spent on the train or bus, the dentists waiting room or as a quick lunch time read. Celebrate life, love and friendship in verse. It's Christmas! contains poems on the humorous aspects of the yuletide season. There are 12 poems (think 12 days of Christmas!) Treat yourself or someone you know to a helping of festive cheer. Excerpt 1:He felt her love linger, live onIn his casket of memories she thrived Ivy, his once constant companion Often, when the sad echoing Silence was quietened, mind stillHis heart would hear her devoted callFrom above in heaven's great skiesExcerpt 2:Arriving three hours early at DeparturesIn the throngs and queues you take your placeRush through check in, expectant smile on facePurchase the presents, Gran's duty free ginOr play at plane spotting, wing after wingRun to the gate, yours, the furthest away oneTo board the vessel of purpose, wishes and funSent from up above to deliver you to seas of azure.Excerpt 3:Dear Farmer Jones,Ho ho ho and off we go! With the 'snips and sprouts we'll not poutWith free flowing gravy fresh from the spoutLove (Yeah right) Tommy and his turkey heroes! Poetically Speaking is a book of poems that should suit every reader. Please enjoy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The purpose of The Broadview Anthology of Poetry is to present a wide range of poetry written in English. [Though the poems are arranged chronologically], we have compiled not a historical survey, but rather a collection of poems that represent a variety of times, places and English-speaking cultures. Our selection process was guided by a wish to combine works long accepted as part of the English-language ‘canon’ with material not always well represented in anthologies—such as, most notably, the poetry of women since the seventeenth century… “Another notion implicit in the framing of this anthology is that English-language poetry has dramatically expanded within the last century. Writers in Australia and New Zealand, Canada, India, Africa and the Caribbean all hold in common with writers in Britain and the United States an English-Language tradition that helped to shape their history and their institutions, and that laid the groundwork for new writings… “In trying to include as wide a selection as possible of representative work…we have had to leave out several well-known long poems. In almost all cases, however, we have chosen to represent a poet by several poems, inviting readers to take a broader view of a given writer’s work and ways of thinking.” — from the Preface

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ForewordIt has been said that words are sacred...that everything in our existence is created by words. "In the beginning...was the Word". Words are one of our few renewable constants. Words carry energy, words can move emotions, and words bring light. This adventure in words was originally inspired by a project dedicated to the memory of those who were affected by the events surrounding the 9/11 tragedy in New York City, and evolved into the book that you are now holding in your hands. For the 11 Words...9 Lines anthology, the challenge was to use our most powerful words to write poems consisting of only 9 lines and 11 words, in any pattern. There were no limits placed on the topics that poets could write about, so they were free to create from their hearts. Everyone was invited to contribute their words for this project, from seasoned poets to those who had never written a poem before. Poets shared their offerings from around the world to make this anthology one of the year's most diverse literary collections. We hope that the impact of each poem will allow you to see into each poet's world, while giving you the chance to see how the use of a few words can paint an entire landscape, tell a whole story, and leave you completely satisfied...so, enjoy!Inner light...chosenbeingsloving...forgiving...changing...shifting...renewing...Chasing darknessWynne Y. Book excerpt: “The cross-section of poets with varying poetics and styles gathered here is only one of the many admirable achievements of this volume.” —Claudia Rankine in the New York Times The Golden Shovel Anthology celebrates the life and work of poet and civil rights icon Gwendolyn Brooks through a dynamic new poetic form, the Golden Shovel, created by National Book Award–winner Terrance Hayes. An array of writers—including winners of the Pulitzer Prize, the T. S. Eliot Prize, and the National Book Award, as well as a couple of National Poets Laureate—have written poems for this exciting new anthology: Rita Dove, Billy Collins, Danez Smith, Nikki Giovanni, Sharon Olds, Tracy K. Smith, Mark Doty, Sharon Draper, Richard Powers, and Julia Glass are just a few of the contributing poets. This second edition includes Golden Shovel poems by two winners and six runners-up from an international student poetry competition judged by Nora Brooks Blakely, Gwendolyn Brooks’s daughter. The poems by these eight talented high school students add to Ms. Brooks’s legacy and contribute to the depth and breadth of this anthology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PrefaceI write for the expression of my soul. It is a release of my inner energies that are begging to come out. The release of this book was not only a journey, but an awakening as well. My words and thoughts evolving in a whole new level, I wanted to embrace more aspects of poetry and try to reach outside the box. This book has been a great sounding board for that. I wanted to formulate my ideas and give more picture and vision to what I was trying to say. Poetry for me encompasses my life. It is the epitome of what I see in everyday aspects of my life. Every nuance, every minute, and every detail that rolls through me, all hold a bit of poetry that I love embracing. It's the little things that capture the inspiration for me and it is why I wanted to make those same pictures come to life as they do in my mind's eye. I have gone through a lot in my life and through those trials I have been able to bring myself back up. Striving to be more then what I can be. The strength I capture within my writing, I have noticed has now become stronger and it is why I want to share my poetic evolution with you.I also want to pay tribute to the guests that I have chosen to feature in this book. I have collaborated with two of the best people that I have had the pleasure to work with. In the poem "Falling Rain", KD Morris has graced me with his poetic talent by sharing his mind with that of my poetic musings. I have been blessed to have his insight bring clarity to this piece. In the two poems "The Wind carried us home to each other"; and "Wish you were here by my side", San Gerardo Rafa, makes his appearance. His help in the two pieces created such a beautiful poetic harmony that both need to be shared. I thank both poets for helping me in my written journey. The last part of my book, I have decided to try something a little different. I have handpicked three different artists, Carla May Listener, Jonathon Taylor and Dion Tootoosis, in which to show different aspects of how poetry can be communicated. All three artists are of aboriginal descent, and all three are Canadian born. I'm extremely honored to have them in my book. They add a special flavor and their words need to be acknowledged. Book excerpt: Gold winner in Poetry and Special Honors Award winner for Best Anthology Nautilus Book Awards The Beautiful New Treasury of Poetry in Endangered Languages, in Association with the National Poetry Library Featuring award-winning poets from cultures as diverse as the Ainu people of Japan to the Zoque of Mexico, with languages that range from the indigenous Ahtna of Alaska to the Shetlandic dialect of Scots, this evocative collection gathers together 50 of the finest poems in endangered, or vulnerable, languages from across the continents. With poems by influential, award-winning poets such as US poet laureate Joy Harjo, Hawad, Valzhyna Mort, and Jackie Kay, this collection offers a unique insight into both languages and poetry, taking the reader on an emotional, life-affirming journey into the cultures of these beautiful languages, celebrating our linguistic diversity and highlighting our commonalities and the fundamental role verbal art plays in human life. Each poem appears in its original form, alongside an English translation, and is accompanied by a commentary about the language, the poet and the poem - in a vibrant celebration of life, diversity, language, and the enduring power of poetry. One language is falling silent every two weeks. Half of the 7,000 languages spoken in the world today will be lost by the end of this century. With the loss of these languages, we also lose the unique poetic traditions of their speakers and writers. This timely anthology is passionately edited by widely published poet and UK National Poetry Librarian, Chris McCabe, who is also the founder of the Endangered Poetry Project, a major project launched by London's Southbank Centre to collect poetry written in the world's disappearing languages, and introduced by Dr Mandana Seyfeddinipur, Director of the Endangered Languages Documentation Programme and the Endangered Languages Archive at SOAS University of London, and Dr Martin Orwin, Senior Lecturer in Somali and Amharic, SOAS University of London. Languages included in the book: Assyrian; Belarusian; Chimiini; Irish Gaelic; Maori; Navajo; Patua; Rotuman; Saami; Scottish Gaelic; Welsh; Yiddish; Zoque Poets included in the book: Joy Harjo; Hawad; Jackie Kay; Aurélia Lassaque; Nineb Lamassu; Gearóid Mac Lochlainn; Valzhyna Mort; Laura Tohe; Taniel Varoujan; Avrom Sutzkever

Book excerpt: An anthology of poetry, song lyrics, and prose featuring writers from Vallejo, California: Diana Alden, Olivia Anderson, Kyrah Ayers, Daniel Badiali, Vallejo Poet Laureate Emerita Genea Brice, Jessica Brown, Lei Kim Sawyer Chavez, G.O. 284, Morgan Hannigan, Travis Jackson, Jr., Kathleen, Jeffrey Kingman, Chuck Lamplighter, Vallejo Poet Laureate D.L. Lang, Lady-D, Lee Lee, Lucinda Lees, Aqueila M. Lewis, Carol Pearlman, Nina Serrano, Ravi Shankar, Erika Snyder, Jeremy Snyder, Regina Sparrow, Diana Tenes, Keith Thompson, Amber Von Nagel, Jeff Williams, Lisa Wilson, and Lois Wu. With additional contributions by: Julia Dvorin, Benicia Poet Laureate Emerita Johanna Ely, Ranjit Singh Gill, Amy Gioletti, Grey, Myra Nissen, Kelliane Parker, Poetic Old Soul, Bobby Richardson, Fred Ross-Perry, Benicia Poet Laureate Tom Stanton, Becky Bishop White, and James Westley. The idea behind this book is to shine a light on as many artists and wordsmiths as possible. It is to allow them to freely express themselves. They were not bound to form, subject matter, or even agreement with one another, so as to truly reflect the diversity of this community. This book contains both stark realism and wondrous beauty. There are poems on love, loss, pain, struggle, justice, peace, revolution, art, and many poems that celebrate our city, its people, and its places. There is a subject index at the end of this book if you’d like to skip around. You’re sure to find something that suits your fancy. Fair warning to parents who wish to shield their children, this is not a book for little kids. No one was censored. Each contributor was encouraged to be themselves, to use whatever words they saw fit, and while it is a book that came together on a common theme of Vallejo, it also contains many other subjects that each poet was passionate about. Their words will make you think about the world and its many varying perspectives, experiences, and people. All contributors were embraced and accepted, even those with the tiniest of connections to the Vallejo community or merely only connected to myself in some cases. Anyone who submitted was welcome. Their writings remain their intellectual property, so reprint requests should go to the original authors of these pieces. This book is merely an opportunity of artistic unity that reaches across all boundaries. The most important part of writing, in this editor’s humble opinion, is the heart of the writer, and this book contains loads of it. These are the pure, uncensored expressions of the hearts of each writer, just as contradictory as life itself, so full of personal and universal truth. Collectively, this book is better than anything each of us could write on our own, and I am honored to have been its editor. Even if I had not been its editor, this is a book I would enjoy reading. The views expressed in this chapbook are those of the individual poets, not necessarily always shared by the city of Vallejo, its poet laureate, the Vallejo Peace Project, or perhaps, even yourself. You may vehemently disagree with some of their words. Please keep an open mind and heart anyways. Their poetry, personalities, backgrounds, and ideas are as gorgeously diverse as our city, and this book aims to welcome everyone within its pages, to give each artist total creative freedom for whatever vision they may wish to express, and to expose each reader to the beauty of their words.
