Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Playgoer's Memories I don't know why you should apply to me for a foreword to your book on the inner history of the late Victorian and Edwardian stage, unless it be for the reason that no one else in the theatrical world is so ignorant as I of the said inner history. I have never in my life been in a green-room - does such a thing exist nowadays - and at theatrical clubs I have been a very infrequent and somewhat dépaysé guest. Therefore I could as easily have written a book on Einstein's Theory of Relativity as on the subjects which you handle with such suave and humane omniscience. I suppose, then, that you apply to me as the least expert and the most appreciative reader you can find. You know how I delighted in your Fifty Years of a Londoner's Life, and you make with confidence a second appeal to my interest in the men and women whom I have hitherto known only, or mainly, as actors and actresses. Book Synopsis The Drama of Memory in Shakespeare's History Plays by : Isabel Karremann
Download or read book The Drama of Memory in Shakespeare's History Plays written by Isabel Karremann and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the drama of memory in Shakespeare's history plays. Situating the plays in relation to the extra-dramatic contexts of early modern print culture, the Reformation and an emergent sense of nationhood, it examines the dramatic devices the theatre developed to engage with the memory crisis triggered by these historical developments. Against the established view that the theatre was a cultural site that served primarily to salvage memories, Isabel Karremann also considers the uses and functions of forgetting on the Shakespearean stage and in early modern culture. Drawing on recent developments in memory studies, new formalism and performance studies, the volume develops an innovative vocabulary and methodology for analysing Shakespeare's mnemonic dramaturgy in terms of the performance of memory that results in innovative readings of the English history plays. Karremann's book is of interest to researchers and upper-level students of Shakespeare studies, early modern drama and memory studies.

Book Synopsis The Tower of London in English Renaissance Drama by : Kristen Deiter
Download or read book The Tower of London in English Renaissance Drama written by Kristen Deiter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-02-23 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tower of London in English Renaissance Drama historicizes the Tower of London's evolving meanings in English culture alongside its representations in twenty-four English history plays, 1579-c.1634, by William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe and others. While Elizabeth I, James I, and Charles I fashioned the Tower as a showplace of royal authority, magnificence, and entertainment, many playwrights of the time revealed the Tower's instability as a royal symbol and represented it, instead, as an emblem of opposition to the crown and as a bodily and spiritual icon of non-royal English identity.
Book Synopsis The Rise of the Victorian Actor by : Michael Baker
Download or read book The Rise of the Victorian Actor written by Michael Baker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1978. Between 1830 and 1890 the English theatre became recognisably modern. Standards of acting and presentation improved immeasurably, new playwrights emerged, theatres became more comfortable and more intimate and playgoing became a national pastime with all classes. The actor’s status rose accordingly. In 1830 he had been little better than a social outcast; by 1880 he had become a member of a skilled, relatively well-paid and respected profession which was attracting new recruits in unprecedented numbers. This is a social history of Victorian actors which seeks to show how wider social attitudes and developments affected the changing status of acting as a profession. Thus the stage’s relationship with the professional world and the other arts is dealt with and is followed by an assessment of the moral and religious background which played so decisive a part in contemporary attitudes to actors. The position of actresses in particular is given special consideration. Many non-theatrical sources are used here and there is a survey of salaries and working conditions in the theatre to show how the rising social status of the actor was matched by changes in his theatrical standing. A novel area of study is covered in tracing the changing social composition of the acting profession over the period and in exploring the case-histories of three generations of performers.
