Book excerpt: Group selection and irregular group shelterwood silvicultural systems are being tested as options to conserve woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) habitat. If successful, the systems will be applied within the very dry, cold Sub-Boreal Pine-Spruce (SBPSxc) and very dry, very cold Montane Spruce (MSxv) biogeoclimatic subzones, located on the high-elevation Chilcotin Plateau of west-central British Columbia. In these harsh growing environments, partial cutting strongly influences the microclimate in terms of air and soil temperature, frost events, and snow-free dates. To examine the magnitude of this influence, three pairs of climate stations were set up in partial cuts and clearcuts, across a range of elevations, to compare microclimate conditions. The study also compared north edge, centre, and south edge microsites within one 30-m opening on each of three partial cuts.

Book excerpt: "In the central interior of British Columbia (Southern Interior Forest Region), Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) tends to occur in even-aged stands in the Interior Cedar-Hemlock Moist, Cool, Horsefly biogeoclimatic variant (ICHmk3). Douglas-fir stands are important from both forest industry and wildlife habitat management perspectives. Mule deer require mature and older Douglas-fir stands as winter range. In these ecosystems, Douglas-fir stands are typically clearcut, thereby seriously compromising habitat value as winter range. This is a pilot study to examine the response of vegetation (percent cover) and Douglas-fir regeneration (density and growth) to a range of opening sizes, opening orientation (along and across contours), and site preparation treatment (yes or no), 5 years post-harvest. The openings (15 165 m [0.25 ha], 30 165 m [0.5 ha], 60 165 m [1.0 ha], 60 330 m and 140 140 m [2.0 ha]) are options for group selection, patch cut, or clearcut silvicultural systems. Although most of the 19 tree, shrub, and grass species that mule deer could eat did not change in percent cover from pre-harvest to 5 years postharvest, the species that did change were most strongly affected by harvesting, not opening size. A major diet component, western redcedar (Thuja plicata), was reduced from 9.6 to 1.4% in the site-prepared openings, and from 9.4 to 3.9% in the openings not site-prepared, when comparing the pre-harvest to the 5th-year post-harvest assessment. However, in the 5 years since harvesting, this species has increased from 533 stems per ha to 783 stems per ha (47%) and should increase steadily in cover over time. Of note was a big increase in red raspberry (Rubus idaeus) (from 0.1% up to 14%) and a moderate increase in birch-leaved spirea (Spirea betufolia) (from 1% up to 6%); however, they generally occur in small amounts (

Book excerpt: The Mount Tom adaptive management trial was initiated in 1999 on 4067 hectares in mountain caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) winter habitat in east-central British Columbia. It builds on and expands knowledge gained from the Quesnel Highland Alternative Silvicultural Systems trial, set up further to the south in 1990, to explore options to maintain caribou habitat while allowing for some forest harvesting. The principal objective of the Mount Tom adaptive management trial is to examine the effects of applying partial cutting, in a range of ecological and geographical contexts, at the operational level. The purpose of this establishment report is to document the study area, layout, and methods associated with the many studies embedded in this long-term, complex trial. Specifically, this report describes studies designed to measure the response of arboreal lichens to partial cutting; describe the pre-harvest stand structure and monitor the post-harvest stand development; measure the treefall rates on opening edges and within the residual forest; measure the response of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir regeneration in a range of opening sizes, ecotypes, site preparation and microsite planting options; monitor the vegetation development in openings; determine the effects of the group selection treatment on snow accumulation and snow ablation rates; and monitor the microclimate. This report also describes the harvesting operations and extension opportunities in the trial.--Document.

Book excerpt: Forest fires facilitate natural regeneration in lodgepole pine, but the pine stands that regenerate after wildfires are often very dense, which usually limits height growth. Such stands are said to be height repressed. One option for treating such stands to reduce or reverse height repression is to use silviculture treatments. This report presents preliminary (third-year) findings of a trial that is testing stand-tending & rehabilitation treatments in a 36-year-old, height-repressed lodgepole pine stand in southern interior British Columbia. The objective of the trial is to determine what regime might provide the most cost-effective means of increasing timber productivity. Treatments tested include fertilization, thinning, thinning followed by fertilization, and replacement of the existing stand.

Book excerpt: That is what this book is about. It is a framework for planning, in which habitat is the key to managing wildlife and making forest managers accountable for their actions. This book is based on the collective knowledge of one group of resource professionals and their understanding about how wildlife relate to forest habitats. And it provides a longoverdue system for considering the impacts of changes in forest structure on all resident wildlife.

Book excerpt: This cooperative effort by USDA Forest Service Research and the National Forest System assesses the state of knowledge related to the conservation status of four forest carnivores in the western United States: American marten, fisher, lynx, and wolverine. The conservation assessment reviews the biology and ecology of these species. It also discusses management considerations stemming from what is known and identifies information needed. Overall, we found huge knowledge gaps that make it difficult to evaluate the species' conservation status.

Book excerpt: The guidelines presented in this publication have been prepared to assist resource managers in the standardized inventory of habitat, and in some cases, populations of selected species of wildlife that potentially occur within the Crown forests of Ontario. The first section describes generalized methods and techniques, including information on personnel and training, planning of field surveys, wildlife habitat inventory and geographic information system technology, and recording the location of observations. The second and main section presents methodologies to identify and delineate featured species habitats. Chapters in this section provide methodologies regarding: moose aquatic feeding areas, bald eagle and osprey nests, and great blue heron colonies; moose winter habitat; white-tailed deer winter habitat; provincially featured birds, mammals, reptiles, and plants; woodland caribou winter habitat, calving and nursery sites; nests of red-shouldered hawk and great gray owl; southern flying squirrel habitats; West Virginia white butterfly habitats; and other vulnerable birds, mammals, and reptiles that can be locally featured.
