This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated just south of the Carolina border in the scenic foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Cherokee County offers the charm of small-town life and country living with the convenience of nearby metropolitan areas. In 1897, the year of its founding, the county inherited a rich history that began with the Cherokee Indians. Home to two American Revolutionary War sites, Cowpens National Battlefield and Kings Mountain Military Park, as well as the Overmountain Victory National Trail, it exists as a bevy of historical sites that date before the county was established.Cherokee County pays tribute to this community's decisive history and celebrates the local architecture, business establishments, and residents, both past and present. Historic views, coupled with informative text, highlight the 1914 Carnegie Library, the charming railroad depot, the Limestone Quarry, and construction of the towering smokestack of Gaffney Manufacturing Company. Vintage photographs depict downtown Gaffney, settled almost a century before Cherokee County became a political entity, and historic Blacksburg, known as Black Station before 1888, while bringing to life the evolution of the 1845 Limestone Springs Female High School into the state's popular Limestone College of today.

Book Synopsis Greetings from Alabama: A Pictorial History in Vintage Postcards by : Wade Hall
Download or read book Greetings from Alabama: A Pictorial History in Vintage Postcards written by Wade Hall and published by NewSouth Books. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although he was a native of Bullock County, Alabama, Wade Hall -- teacher, writer, poet, critic, interviewer, folklorist, and documentarian -- spent most of his fifty-year career in Kentucky. But he was never emotionally far from his home as evidenced by his passion for collecting vintage Alabama postcards. In his lifetime he amassed 10,000, which he then graciously gave to the University of Alabama Libraries and Troy University in a large joint bequest that also included rare books, quilts, folk art, letters and more. These postcards date from the late 1800s to the mid-20th century and offer a fascinating and diverse picture of the state. The meaning of postcards that could be purchased as a travel souvenir is largely forgotten today when cameras are commonplace. But the value of Hall's stunning collection cannot be missed. The some 400 cards featured in Greetings from Alabama are revealing of scenes familiar and rare. From Birmingham's Vulcan to Mobile's Bellingrath Gardens, from Enterprise's boll weevil monument to Huntsville's rockets, from Helen Keller's home to William Rufus King's resting place, the scenes offer captivating glimpses of Alabama history.

Download or read book A History of Weiss Lake written by Douglas Scott Wright and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008-10-20 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the late 1950s, the major body of water for residents of northeast Alabama was the Coosa River, which wove prominently through the rural landscape of the region. When Alabama Power Company decided to dam the river in order to build a thirty-thousand-acre reservoir, locals were divided about whether to welcome the hydroelectricity and potential prosperity or resist losing their land and proud agrarian heritage. Three years and millions of cubic yards of earth later, Weiss Lake emerged to alter Cherokee County history permanently. Post editor and county native Scott Wright presents a captivating collection of personal recollections and historical vignettes to illustrate the magnitude of the lake's influence in shaping the future of the area--and damming its past.
Book Synopsis A Pictorial History and Trekking Guide of the Wilderness Road by : Daniel W. Weidner EdD DLitt
Download or read book A Pictorial History and Trekking Guide of the Wilderness Road written by Daniel W. Weidner EdD DLitt and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the history of the Wilderness Road and a trekking guide with photos. It presents the background of how Daniel Boone and a group of some thirty men blazed a trail by way of three states to connect Kingsport, Tennessee, to Middlesboro, Kentucky, and became an important roadway in modern-day industrial United States. Its beginning opened the east to the west for what was the early pioneering spirit of pioneers that settled those lands along with early tradesmen and stockmen. Its importance became famous with the discovery of iron ore in its environs of Middleboro; that is a story of unfounded lasting wealth that ended with disappointment for those of the area and Englishmen who invested heavily only to have the grade of iron ore become useless. It played its role during the Civil War and its status today in a thriving city. It stands as a monument to Daniel Boone and the thirty men who created it, the undaunted pioneer men and women who faced and conquered natural and human hardships that made it a lasting monument to humanity as part of the history of the United States.

Book excerpt: Their songs insist that the arrival of the railroad and the appearance of the tiny depot often created such hope that it inspired the construction of the architectural extravaganzas that were the courthouses of the era. In these buildings the distorted myth of the Old South collided head-on with the equally deformed myth of the New South."

Download or read book Canton written by Rebecca Johnston and published by Arcadia Library Editions. This book was released on 2015-05-11 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chartered on December 24, 1833, Canton was the county seat of the fledging Cherokee County, which the Georgia Legislature created two years earlier from Cherokee Indian Territory. Situated in a wide curve of the Etowah River, Canton was ideally located to become the economic, social, and educational center of the region. The earliest white settlers had already started arriving in the area, lured by the discovery of gold, state lotteries offering free land, and abundant natural resources. Early residents like William Grisham, Judge Joseph Donaldson, and John P. Brooke quickly established themselves as leaders of the new town. As Canton thrived, it became home to men like Joseph Emerson Brown, who later served as Georgia's governor during the Civil War--a distinction that led to the town being mostly burned by Sherman's troops. By the early 1900s, the railroad brought a new prosperity, a cotton mill was flourishing, and Canton was set to enjoy the next century as a center of government, banking, and commerce.

Book excerpt: Although African Americans make up a small portion of the population of western North Carolina, they have contributed much to the area's physical and cultural landscape. This enlightening study surveys the region's segregated black schools from Reconstruction through integration and reveals the struggles, achievements, and ultimate victory of a unified community intent on achieving an adequate education for its children. The book documents the events that initially brought blacks into Appalachia, early efforts to educate black children, the movement to acquire and improve schools, and the long process of desegregation. Personnel issues, curriculum, extracurricular activities, sports, consolidation, and construction also receive attention. Featuring commentary from former students, teachers and parents, this work weighs the value and achievement of rural segregated black schools as well as their significance for educators today.
