Book Synopsis The Rotation of Sun and Stars by : Jean-Pierre Rozelot
Download or read book The Rotation of Sun and Stars written by Jean-Pierre Rozelot and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-01-08 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sun and stars rotate in di?erent ways and at di?erent velocity rates. The knowledge of how they rotate is important in understanding the formation and evolution of stars and their structure. The closest star to our Earth, the Sun, is a good laboratory to study in detail the rotation of a G star and allows to test new ideas and develop new techniques to study stellar rotation. More or less massive, more or lessevolved objects, however, can have averydi?erent rotation rate, structure and history. In recent years our understanding of the rotation of the Sun has greatly improved. The Sun has a well-known large-scale rotation, which can be m- sured thanks to visible features across the solar disk, such as sunspots, or via spectroscopy. In addition, several studies cast light on di?erential rotation in the convective zone and on meridional circulation in the radiative zone of the Sun. Even the rotation of the core of the Sun can now be studied thanks to various methods, such as dynamics of the gravitational moments and of course, helioseismology, through g-modes analysis. Moreover, the magnetic ?eld is strongly linked to the matter motions in the solar plasma. The solar magnetic ?eld can be measured only at the surface or in theupperlayers.Itistheproductoftheinternaldynamoorofthelocaldynamos if they exist – in any case magnetic ?eld and rotation cannot thus be separated.
Download or read book StarBriefs 2001 written by André Heck and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-11-01 with total page 813 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When working in the highly technical fields of astronomy and the related space sciences, the practitioner is constantly confronted with a baffling array of different abbreviations, acronyms, contractions, and symbols. The identification and differentiation of these terms is a task which, all too often, can prove to be a near impossible one. With over 140,000 separate dictionary-style entries, and over 20 years in collation, StarBriefs 2001 represents the most comprehensive and accurately validated collection of abbreviations, acronyms, contractions, and symbols within astronomy, related space sciences and other related fields. As such, this invaluable reference source (and its companion volume, StarGuides 2001 should be on the reference shelf of every library, organisation or individual with any interest in these areas. Besides astronomy and space sciences, related fields such as aeronautics, aeronomy, astronautics, atmospheric sciences, chemistry, communications, computer sciences, data processing, education, electronics, engineering, energetics, environmental, geodesy, geophysics, information handling, management, mathematics, meteorology, optics, physics, remote sensing, and so on, are also covered when justified. In addition, there are separate sections devoted to Greek letters, mathematical symbols, special signs and characters, as well as to entries with a numerical prefix. Finally, terms in common use and/or of general interest have also been included where appropriate.

Book Synopsis From White Dwarfs to Black Holes by : G. Srinivasan
Download or read book From White Dwarfs to Black Holes written by G. Srinivasan and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1999-06-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From White Dwarfs to Black Holes chronicles the extraordinarily productive scientific career of Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, one of the twentieth century's most distinguished astrophysicists. Among Chandrasekhar's many discoveries were the critical mass that makes a star too massive to become a white dwarf and the mathematical theory of black holes. In 1983 he shared the Nobel Prize for Physics for these and other achievements. Over the course of more than six decades of active research Chandrasekhar investigated a dizzying array of subjects. G. Srinivasan notes in the preface to this book that "the range of Chandra's contributions is so vast that no one person in the physics or astronomy community can undertake the task of commenting on his achievements." Thus, in this collection, ten eminent scientists evaluate Chandrasekhar's contributions to their own fields of specialization. Donald E. Osterbrock closes the volume with a historical discussion of Chandrasekhar's interactions with graduate students during his more than quarter century at Yerkes Observatory. Contributors are James Binney, John L. Friedman, Norman R. Lebovitz, Donald E. Osterbrock, E. N. Parker, Roger Penrose, A. R. P. Rau, George B. Rybicki, E. E. Salpeter, Bernard F. Schutz, and G. Srinivasan.
