Book Synopsis Phonological Processes and Brain Mechanisms by : Harry Whitaker
Download or read book Phonological Processes and Brain Mechanisms written by Harry Whitaker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phonological Processes and Brain Mechanisms reviews selective neurolinguistic research relating brain structures to phonology. The studies in the volume report on a number of timely and important topics, such as a neuronal model for processing segmental phonology, the role of the thalamus and basal ganglia in language processing, and oral reading in dyslexia. Increasingly, phonology is considered a cognitive module whose brain correlates may be independently investigated. Given the modular nature of the phonological system and its direct linkage with peripheral components of the nervous system, research on phonology and the brain will undoubtedly flourish in the future. The chapters in this volume give substance to this future.
Book Synopsis Spoken Word Production and Its Breakdown In Aphasia by : Lyndsey Nickels
Download or read book Spoken Word Production and Its Breakdown In Aphasia written by Lyndsey Nickels and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume combines in-depth reviews of models of spoken word production and cognitive neuropsychological disorders of spoken word production. The first section provides a detailed discussion of the development and structure of current models of language production using data form "normal" subjects. It is these models that form the basis of the study and therefore the text attempts to explain their processing mechanisms and assumptions clearly. The evidence used for the development of these models is described including experimental studies and observation of patterns in naturally occurring speech errors.; The second section focuses on studies of aphasic naming disorders and discusses these disorders in terms of the model described in the first section. The emphasis is on single case studies. These are reviewed in three chapters examining semantic errors and disorders, the range of symptoms attributed to disorders of lexical retriveal and deficits of phonological encoding. The text assumes that the reader has some familiarity with the linguistic and psychological terminology relevant to these areas and therefore is most suited to the graduate student or researcher/lecturer.

Book Synopsis Conduction Aphasia by : Susan E. Kohn
Download or read book Conduction Aphasia written by Susan E. Kohn and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, questions about the clinical classification and experimental examination of aphasic patients have been raised. Growing doubts about the validity and reliability of standard clinical diagnoses have been responsible, in part, for the explosion of case studies in the neurolinguistic literature. In turn, rejection of classical aphasia diagnoses has made it difficult to synthesize much of this literature, and no alternative method for selecting and comparing aphasic patients has emerged. This volume was motivated by a desire to take a fresh look at the benefits that aphasia diagnosis has for both clinical and experimental work. This is accomplished by exploring one classical aphasia syndrome from a multidisciplinary perspective; that is, by presenting information from the disciplines of neurology, speech-language pathology, and experimental neurolinguistics. Given this scope, it is hoped that this work will appeal to an equally broad range of readers.
Book Synopsis Investigations in Clinical Phonetics and Linguistics by : Fay Windsor
Download or read book Investigations in Clinical Phonetics and Linguistics written by Fay Windsor and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations in Clinical Phonetics and Linguistics is a sequel to the eighth meeting of the International Clinical Phonetics and Linguistics Association, attended by delegates from 26 different countries. This book reflects the scope of the subject area of clinical phonetics and linguistics, the balance of input into it with respect to the different kinds of research being carried on, and the representation of researchers from different parts of the world. Its scope includes the application of all levels of linguistic analysis and the chapters of the book have been ordered as far as possible according to linguistic level, beginning with pragmatics and ending with acoustics. It will be immediately apparent that a greater number of chapters are concerned with applications of phonetics and phonology then with any other levels.
Book Synopsis Linguistic Analyses of Aphasic Language by : Wolfgang U. Dressler
Download or read book Linguistic Analyses of Aphasic Language written by Wolfgang U. Dressler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linguistic Analyses of Aphasic Language represents results from linguistic and neurolinguistic research on aphasic language performance. The contributions encompass all linguistic levels, ranging from phonetics to discourse, and present results on languages other than English. The findings and applied methods are both relevant to the study of aphasia in general and to cross-linguistic analyses. Furthermore, they have clear implications for language and speech therapy and thus show the importance of linguistic concepts for language testing and therapeutic intervention.
Book Synopsis A Linguistic Investigation of Aphasic Chinese Speech by : J. Packard
Download or read book A Linguistic Investigation of Aphasic Chinese Speech written by J. Packard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Linguistic Investigation of Aphasic Chinese Speech is the first detailed linguistic analysis of a large body of aphasic Chinese natural speech data. This work describes how the major aphasia syndromes are manifest in Chinese, a language which differs significantly from languages upon which traditional aphasia theory is based. Following the Chinese data, a new explanation for the major aphasia syndromes is offered based on the cognitive science modularity hypothesis. The theory posits that Broca's aphasia is the result of computational deficits that occur within linguistic components, while Wernicke's aphasia is the result of deficits that occur in the transfer of information between components. It is demonstrated how the fluent and non-fluent characteristics of the major aphasia syndromes follow directly from the properties of cognitive modules. Detailed linguistic descriptions of Broca's and Wernicke's aphasia in Chinese are provided, including a summary of diagnostics of aphasia type. The complete corpora of four aphasic Chinese speakers, including interlinear and free translations, are presented in an Appendix.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuropsycholinguistics - the interaction between linguistics, psycholinguistics, and aphasiology - has, over the past two decades, established itself as a multidisciplinary science worthy of its recent attention in Drs. Nespoulous and Villiard's Morphology, Phonology and Aphasia. In this new volume in the Springer Series in Neuropsychology, the editors have most successfully developed a multidisciplinary team of research through the organization of two symposia - one on "Morphology and Aphasia", the other focused on "Phonology and Aphasia". Toward the goal of better understanding the aphasic patients' verbal behavior, the contributing authors of this important work offer their respective expertise, continuing the recent evolution of developments in the fields of morphology and phonology.
