Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Philosophical Introduction to Ethics: An Advocacy of the Spiritual Principle in Ethics The series of lectures of which this book is composed was in the first instance delivered as an Inter-Collegiate Course at Westfield College, University of London, during the Michaelmas term, 1903. Apart from an occasional rearrangement of the subject-matter the lectures remain practically in the form in which they were originally given. My sincerest thanks are due to Prof. G. F. Stout for kindly reading through the proof-sheets and for suggesting some important improvements. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It contains a variety of readings encompassing contemporary and classic philosophers, male and female perspectives of both Western and non-Western ethical traditions, and readings in both theoretical and applied ethics. Introduction to Ethics comprises of thirty-seven essays divided into nine chapters; the first chapter introduces the nature of moral theory with a brief account of the different moral theories that will follow in the text. Finally, chapter 9 offers readings in practical guidance on 'living a good life.' Each chapter has a brief introduction that provides an overview of the selection with pointers on what to note as the selection is read and concludes with a series of thought-provoking study questions and a selection for further reading making it easier for students to understand and appreciate their reading.

Download or read book Morality written by Bernard Williams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Morality Bernard Williams confronts the problems of writing moral philosophy, and offers a stimulating alternative to more systematic accounts which seem nevertheless to have left all the important issues somewhere off the page. Williams explains, analyses and distinguishes a number of key positions, from the purely amoral to notions of subjective or relative morality, testing their coherence before going on to explore the nature of 'goodness' in relation to responsibilities and choice, roles, standards, and human nature. A classic in moral philosophy.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to Ethics by : Brian Besong
Download or read book An Introduction to Ethics written by Brian Besong and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is natural for us to wonder what should I do, and why? And although a combination of common sense and upbringing aids us in answering our questions, it is also natural for us to seek answers that are grounded in something deeper and more enduring than our personal dispositions and those of our parents. We seek a genuinely good life and the practical wisdom necessary to arrive at happiness. In this Introduction to Ethics, Brian Besong presents a comprehensive and contemporary introduction to the practical wisdom handed down to us by Aristotle, St. Thomas Aquinas, and many others--a position now commonly called "natural law." Written as a beginner's guide, the book systematically explores a range of moral issues including moral knowledge, happiness, right and wrong action, and virtues, to name a few. Introduction to Ethics explains in a lively way how natural law provides principled and persuasive answers to our most fundamental moral questions.
Download or read book Ethics written by David Wiggins and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost every thoughtful person wonders at some time why morality says what it says and how, if at all, it speaks to us. David Wiggins surveys the answers most commonly proposed for such questions--and does so in a way that the thinking reader, increasingly perplexed by the everyday problem of moral philosophy, can follow. His work is thus an introduction to ethics that presupposes nothing more than the reader's willingness to read philosophical proposals closely and literally. Gathering insights from Hume, Kant, the utilitarians, and a twentieth-century assortment of post-utilitarian thinkers, and drawing on sources as diverse as Aristotle, Simone Weil, and Philippa Foot, Wiggins points to the special role of the sentiments of solidarity and reciprocity that human beings will find within themselves. After examining the part such sentiments play in sustaining our ordinary ideas of agency and responsibility, he searches the political sphere for a neo-Aristotelian account of justice that will cohere with such an account of morality. Finally, Wiggins turns to the standing of morality and the question of the objectivity or reality of ethical demands. As the need arises at various points in the book, he pursues a variety of related issues and engages additional thinkers--Plato, C. S. Peirce, Darwin, Schopenhauer, Leibniz, John Rawls, Montaigne and others--always emphasizing the words of the philosophers under discussion, and giving readers the resources to arrive at their own viewpoint of why and how ethics matters.
Book Synopsis Ethics Goes to the Movies by : Christopher Falzon
Download or read book Ethics Goes to the Movies written by Christopher Falzon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Movies hold a mirror up to us, portraying the complexities of human reality through their characters and stories. And they vividly illustrate moral theories that address questions about how we are to live and what sort of people we ought to be. In this book, Christopher Falzon uses movies to provide a rich survey of moral positions as they have emerged through history. These include the ethics of the ancient world, medieval ethics, Enlightenment and Kantian ethics, existentialist ethics and the ethics of the other. Each theory is explained in detail, using a number of examples from the book’s wide selection of movies. The discussion draws on a range of recent and not-so-recent films, from Hollywood blockbusters to art-house cinema. Key Features: In addition to covering thinkers one would expect in an introduction to ethics (e.g., Plato, Aristotle, Kant), the book discusses less canonical figures in detail as well (e.g., Marcuse, Foucault, Habermas). Similarly, the book examines both major ethical theories (e.g., Kantianism, utilitarianism, virtue ethics) and theories too often glossed over in introductory texts (e.g. Stoicism, Epicureanism, Habermas's discourse ethics and Nietzschean ethics). A wide range of movies are discussed, from Hollywood blockbusters and classics like The Dark Knight, Casablanca and Dirty Harry to lesser known films, like Force Majeure and Under the Skin. Atthe end of each chapter a focus on two feature films is included, with a plot summary and interpretations of several key scenes with a time marker indicating when in the film the scenes occur. A Filmography includes all movies discussed in the book and a Glossary covers key philosophical terms and figures; both with corresponding page numbers.

Book Synopsis Morality and the Good Life by : Robert C. Solomon
Download or read book Morality and the Good Life written by Robert C. Solomon and published by McGraw-Hill Humanities, Social Sciences & World Languages. This book was released on 2004 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The premise of this ethical theory anthology is that the study of ethics represents, above all else, participation in the thinking of a long tradition of philosophers. Organized historically by philosopher, the book provides an introductory chapter on ethical concepts and helpful commentary and study questions throughout the reading selections. Morality and the Good Life is substantial enough for a full course in ethics, but it is concise enough to allow the instructor time to include other approaches in addition to the classic texts and materials presented in this volume.
