Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophical Grammar of the English Language: In Connection With the Laws of Matter and of Thought, Deduced From the English Language Alone, Without Regard to the Grammatical Principles of Other Tongues The author of the following pages, deems it due to himself, to give the reasons which induced him to attempt authorship, in a department of science not inseparably connected with his vocation as a Christian minister. He was disabled, by a providential affection, from pursuing the regular duties of his calling, and found it necessary, for the support ofa helpless and dependent family, to commence instructing youth. In this employment, he had an opportunity of testing the practical results of what he conceived to be the true principles of English grammar; and found by present ing those principles directly to the mind, unencumbered by the labored classifications of the old grammars, he could im part a more perfect knowledge of grammar to his pupils, and that too, in much less time, than he could by pursuing the usual course of instruction. He also found, that the la bor of memorising was greatly abridged, by the conciseness of his classifications; and his mnemonical chart so assisted the memory, that the subject could be presented to the mind immediately, without any previous memorising. Excerpt: ... me and tham are here in the Saxon dative case. Me. thinks, it seems to me, mini videtur. RULE II. A name, a nominative case or a sentence joined with a participle of the present tense, may stand in construction without a verb, forming the Case absolute, or Clause independent; as "Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place." John 5. 13. Here multitude, the name, joined with being, stands without a verb. " By memory we conceive heat or light, yellow or sweet, the object being removed." Locke 2. 10, " I have, notwithstanding this discouragement, attempted a dictionary of the English language." Johnson's Preface. " Whatever substance begins to exist, it must, during in existence, necessarily be the same." Locke 2. 27.-28. " The penalty shall be fine and imprisonment, any law or custom to the contrary notwithstanding." The latter phraseology is peculiar to the technical law style. In no other case, does notwithstanding follow the sentence. But this position makes no difference in the true construction, which is, " any law or custom to the contrary not opposing"--the real clause independent. It is very common, when this participle agrees with a number of words, or a whole clause, to omit the whole except the participle; and in this use of notwithstanding, we have a striking proof of the value of abbreviations in language. For example; " Moses said, let no man leave of it till the morning. Notwithstanding, they hearkened not unto Moses." Ex. 16. 20. Here notwithstanding stands without the clause to which it belongs; to complete the sense in words, it would be necessary to repeat the whole preceding clause or the substance of it--" Moses said, let no man leave of it until the morning. Notwithstanding this command of Moses, ...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The General Principles of Language: Or, the Philosophy of Grammar The study of Grammar has been so constantly pursued in a manner almost purely mechanical, that both teachers and pupils seem to have generally forgotten that any theory or philosophical basis can exist on which its great general principles arc founded. It is true that the usage of each particular language will always guide and govern the practice of that language; but besides this, the facts that words represent ideas, and that the connexions between ideas in the mind must be indicated by corresponding connexions in the words, afford a common basis for the great general rules which are identical in all languages. Tho following treatise is an attempt to explain and illustrate these general principles - to show how they originate in the operations of the mind, and to what extent they are necessarily identical in all languages. It is not intended to introduce these considerations to the exclusion of the practical rules which operate in immediate connexion with the usage of any language, but rather to explain, so far as possible, the origin of these rules, and thereby afford a more accurate and precise means of examining the analysis of sentences, the nature of words, and their syntactical arrangement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Philosophical Grammar of the English Language We not only give our decided approbation of its superior merits, but feel also much pleasure in recommending it to those anxious for sterling knowledge on the peculiarities of our language. - Advertiser, May, 1834. Skibbereen, Co. Cork, 12th May, 1825. Dear Sir - I have great pleasure in complying with your request, so far as it involves a desire to express my opinion on the merits of your production on the grammatical principles of our language. I regret that my present position amongst the literary characters of the day, is not so conspicuous as I could desire, in order to add that importance to my decision which would do something like justice to your deserts in this instance. I have read your book with much attention, and, I must add, with profit and delight. I do it but justice, when I say, that in my humble opinion, it must, if respectably published, supersede every thing of its kind. I shall feel happy, when it is published, to give it every support in my power; and, as a foretaste of that intention, entreat you to enter my name for fifty copies. I am, dear Sir, your obedient servant, Mr. J.W. Wright. Michael Collins, R. C. B., M. C. Skibbereen School, Feb. 10, 1826. Dear Sir - I am free to acknowledge, that on receipt of your English Grammar, I took it up under feelings ill calculated to enhance its value in my esteem. These feelings, I am bound to say, originated in the fixed conviction, that a subject so hackneyed by numerous writers, since the production of Mr. Murray's amended and enlarged edition, (without evincing, in any one instance, that importance which would redeem the pretensions advanced) had already attained its standard point of perfection; and that, consequently, further attempts, however well designed, would prove uninteresting, if not altogether nugatory. With pleasure, I retract what I now clearly perceive is an untenable position; and, I am of opinion, that your truly interesting work requires nought but circulation to be duly appreciated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete Scientific Grammar of the English Language The text books are filled with a mass of absurdity and contradiction totally unworthy of the name of science and the time and labor of those who use them are worse than wasted. This state of things 18 a disgrace to the scholarship of the age, and calls loudly for a reformation. The absolute truth of these statements can easily be demonstrated but there is no room in this volume for such matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Grammar of the English Language The grammar of our language has received too little atten tion from men engaged in literary pursuits. Those who have written on the subject, with the exception of Tooke and Webster, have paid too much regard to ancient, and too little to cotemporary and cognate languages - and too little also to the language itself as it is spoken and written. It is not a subject unworthy the attention of men who have attained an elevated rank as scholars. It has, on the contrary, high claims upon those who feel an attachment to elegant litera ture, and a solicitude for the improvement of the medium by which so much pleasure and instruction [8 imparted. -the learned of France and Italy, by. The attention which they have devoted to this branch of literature, have acquired for their respective languages a high reputation; would our own scholars but consider the subject worthy thelr attention, they might easily vindicate the claim of the English to an equality at least with either. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the most compelling books on any subject, are those born out of a deep love for the subject matter. James Harris, writer and grammarian, had two main goals in mind when publishing Hermes Or a Philosophical Inquiry Concerning Universal Grammar his primary goal was to "excite his Readers to curiosity and inquiry" and if that goal was successfully achieved then his secondary goal was to captivate his readers to the point that they would willingly become teachers of grammar themselves. While these objectives may seem lofty, strange, or even inconceivable by today's readers; for someone living in the turn of the eighteenth century, with the freedom to do as they wished, these goals are no more or less worthy than those of scientists, peacekeepers, or philosophers of the time. Harris believed that the pursuit of grammatical purity was second to none, and the evidence of this passion is visible throughout his work. Defying expectations as a grammatical primer, Hermes Or a Philosophical Inquiry Concerning Universal Grammar is a comprehensive read, covering every aspect of grammar from the formation of words and sentences to the use of verbs, times, tenses, participles, conjunctions, prepositions and to the history of language and grammar. Harris spends a tremendous amount of time lovingly describing the ancient Greek language and its modern English variants. It is impossible to walk away from this text without learning something more than you already knew about grammar. Independently wealthy, Harris had the time and the drive to devote much of his life to the study of grammar. How one wrote or spoke often belied their refinement or education, and Harris believed that any man could learn to be a scholar, thus bettering himself and his station, ultimately inspiring him to write Hermes Or a Philosophical Inquiry Concerning Universal Grammar and charge his readers with the mission to study and teach grammar. The charm, confidence, and relative naivete of the author makes this an enchanting book for the reader. Grammar may not be the most exciting topic, but Harris' passion for the subject comes through on each page and the reader is quickly swept up in his enthusiasm.
