Scripture provides the basis for transformation to take place, and addressing this must include spiritual disciplines. Prayer, confession, Bible study and other spiritual disciplines need to be practiced to build every believer s relationship with God and grow into His likeness. In this way, individuals and church leaders each become more effective in their spiritual lives. The more disciplines are practiced, the more effective leadership marks become apparent among the body of believers. As a result, the church becomes healthier. When its leaders are transformed, the whole church benefits. This book intentionally addresses four groups in the church. First, all people attending church will be challenged to practice spiritual disciplines. It will also challenge those who are training for Christian leadership, as well as pulpit committees, to stress that spiritual disciplines need to be found in a Christian leader. Finally, pastors will be challenged to personally incorporate spiritual disciplines into daily life to an even greater degree than before and urge the people they shepherd to do the same. Spiritual disciplines supply the supportive structure for the transformation of Romans 12:1-2 to take place. More than ever before, leaders are searching for answers in order to move the church in the right direction. Short-term success appears to be more popular among God s people than long-term effectiveness. The practice of spiritual disciplines will build and deepen spiritual lives. Core spiritual disciplines are foundational to build effective leadership marks in the lives of believers. Gary s desire in ministry is to be out of work to train and develop spiritual leaders in the church who can do the work of the ministry. Paul s final words to the elders in Ephesus were, Guard yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood (Acts 20:28). He then followed up with his benediction; Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace. Feeding on the Word and maintaining an intimate, trusting relationship with God are the keys that Gary emphasizes in this fine book. As my pastor, I have often heard him comment, That s not a hill worth dying on. There are many projects and programs that could be pushed in the church some good, most not worth dying for. But the one thing that is lacking is the development of men and women of God who consistently practice core spiritual disciplines. Character counts. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore how spiritual leaders in faith-based organizations inspired their employees through the application of values and behaviors relating to spirituality that can produce either a negative or positive change in workers' behavior and environment. This phenomenological study explored how spirituality influences others through values, attitudes, and behaviors in a manner that integrates a sense well-being, "calling," and membership in the workplace. The three streams of theory, research, and practice that informed this study included spirituality, spiritual leadership, and faith-based organizations. The research sought to answer 3 overarching questions: (a) What is the essence of leading at a faith-based organization? (b) How does an individual incorporate his or her own spirituality into leadership practices? (c) How do leaders' values, attitudes, and behaviors integrate a sense of well-being, calling, and membership? A phenomenological research method was used, which involved interviews, observations, field notes, and artifact collection. Data were coded and analyzed. Four themes emerged from the results: (a) spiritual leaders have a deep commitment to utilizing positive spiritual practices to promote positive changes in the behavior of individuals or the culture of an organization, (b) spiritual leaders are influenced by their personal experiences through service to others in the workplace, (c) spiritual beliefs for both spiritual leaders and faith-based organizations are an essential component of functionality and longevity, and (d) spiritual leaders establish trust in the organizations they lead by using positive attributes associated with servant leadership and spirituality.

Very few such efforts pay serious attention to the role of religion and spirituality in the lives of American adolescents. But many teenagers are very involved in religion. Surveys reveal that 35% attend religious services weekly and another 15% attend at least monthly. 60% say that religious faith is important in their lives. 40% report that they pray daily. 25% say that they have been "born again." Teenagers feel good about the congregations they belong to. Some say that faith provides them with guidance and resources for knowing how to live well. What is going on in the religious and spiritual lives of American teenagers? What do they actually believe? What religious practices do they engage in? Do they expect to remain loyal to the faith of their parents? Or are they abandoning traditional religious institutions in search of a new, more authentic "spirituality"? This book attempts to answer these and related questions as definitively as possible. It reports the findings of The National Study of Youth and Religion, the largest and most detailed such study ever undertaken. The NYSR conducted a nationwide telephone survey of teens and significant caregivers, as well as nearly 300 in-depth face-to-face interviews with a sample of the population that was surveyed. The results show that religion and spirituality are indeed very significant in the lives of many American teenagers. Among many other discoveries, they find that teenagers are far more influenced by the religious beliefs and practices of their parents and caregivers than commonly thought. They refute the conventional wisdom that teens are "spiritual but not religious." And they confirm that greater religiosity is significantly associated with more positive adolescent life outcomes. This eagerly-awaited volume not only provides an unprecedented understanding of adolescent religion and spirituality but, because teenagers serve as bellwethers for possible future trends, it affords an important and distinctive window through which to observe and assess the current state and future direction of American religion as a whole.

Two-thirds of the students in the study express a strong interest in spiritual matters, well over half report that their professors never encourage discussions of religious or spiritual matters, and about the same proportion report that professors never provide opportunities to discuss the purpose and meaning of life. Cultivating the Spirit aims to raise the awareness of academic administrators, faculty, and the public at large to the vital role that spirituality plays in student learning and development. Throughout the book, the authors identify strategies for enhancing students' development and encourage the academy to give greater priority to the spiritual aspects of students' educational and personal development.

Book excerpt: While many churches today have moved away from the practice of church-based women’s ministries, other churches still see their value and continue their dedication to providing specifically tailored programs to address the spiritual formation in women. The Bible reminds us in Hebrews 10:25 that we are not to forsake “the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some...” (King James Bible, 1769/2017, Heb. 10:25). However, some churches desire to assemble specific ministries separately, women from men. This study attempted to identify values in the spiritual formation of women and explored whether those values are still helpful in the spiritual formation of women over time. The method of the study used is the email method. The researcher chose this method over other research methods due to COVID restrictions and several military relocations, both within and outside of the United States. In addition, the strengths of the email method allowed access to a broader selection of churches. The study included 32 participants representing 28 different churches within and outside the United States. Five biblically-based Christian values were used in the study to describe the impact on the participants' personal lives and spiritual formation. The outcome was that 20 of 32 participants indicated that they observed all five biblically-based Christian values from their women’s ministry program. All participants stated they today maintained at least one of the five biblically-based values.
