An interpretive phenomenological approach, underpinned by Gadamer's hermeneutic philosophy, was used with semi-structured interviews, in a sample of nine full-time, first year university students, ages 18-20 years. The experience of flourishing emerged as temporal thematic understandings unearthing factors associated with: 1) personal strengths and areas of personal challenges 2) positive and trying aspects of personal health challenges 3) family/parental support and challenges 4) positive and challenging aspects of the living, high school and university environments and 5) positive and challenging aspects of community involvement. These perceptions offer new understandings of the concept of flourishing as well as implications for practice, policy, and research.

During this research a students' experiences with a transition was generally defined as their transition to a four-year university after they graduate high school with their associate degree. The theory guiding this study was Schlossberg’s transition theory, which explores how people cope with transitions. The central research question examined during this study is “How do graduates of an ECHS in the South describe their experiences with their transition to a four-year university?” The three sub-questions in this study examined students’ experiences of moving in, moving through, and moving out of the four-year university. A transcendental phenomenological research design was used to study the research questions. The study included 11 participants that graduated from the southern collegiate high school located on the Southern Community College campus. Data was collected using a questionnaire, a semi-structured interview, letter-writing, and focus groups. The data was analyzed using phenomenological reduction, which includes horizontalization, imaginative variation, and synthesis. Several themes emerged including 1) Self-Awareness 2) Academic Preparation 3) College Awareness and 4) Relationships. Each of these primary themes have several sub-themes that also emerged. These themes and sub-themes informed the answers to the research questions regarding the experiences of graduates from an ECHS and their transition to a four-year university.

The participants were selected through purposive sampling to include students who were part of college transition programs. The students’ high school experiences and permanent residences were from within one urban public school district in Richland, Virginia (pseudonym utilized), which is also the general setting. Because students were attending college, the data collection occurred virtually. Data collection included individual interviews, a single focus group, and a qualitative questionnaire. Significant statements were highlighted, coded, and analyzed to discover emerging themes from the data obtained. Several themes emerged which included student perceptions on how their families provided financial and emotional supports, acted as role models, and offered guidance. Additionally, the themes of rigor and advising, as well as programs and organizations and peers and culture emerged also.

The terms "dropout" and "stop-out" often pertain to high school or college students between freshman and sophomore year, as these subgroups of students are the primary members of the dropout phenomenon we see today. However, the number of senior-level students stopping-out before degree completion is growing and deserves the attention of the higher education community. Thus, this study used a qualitative phenomenological research method to explore the lived experiences of college-level seniors who stopped out before degree completion. The results of this study revealed that when college-level students consider stopping out, they examine their interactions with faculty, passion and connection to their major, peer integration, and non-academic barriers to persistence. This study provides implications for both policy and practice in addressing the unique needs of senior-level students. Moreover, this study outlines specific recommendations for educational leaders to better support this population by remembering that access without support is not opportunity, to turn to their student population for information when trying to improve retention issues and to prioritize flexible paths to degree completion.

Technological advancements have helped to further distributed learning, making instruction available to students in various geographic locations and times. Virtual secondary education is a form of distributed learning where secondary students complete their degrees fully online, outside of a brick-and-mortar school. There is a lack of information regarding the experiences of these students as they transition to traditional colleges and universities after attending virtual high schools. This study sought to describe the experiences of virtual high school graduates as they transition to traditional colleges and universities. The study was qualitative in nature, and used phenomenological research methods to form an understanding of these experiences. The study was completed in the fall semester of 2012. A total of 12 virtual high school graduates from South Carolina virtual high schools were interviewed. Nine of the students were attending traditional, brick-and-mortar four year degree awarding higher education institutions, and three students were attending technical colleges. The findings revealed four themes, two related to the academic aspect of the transition, and two related to the social aspects. The academic themes were time management and learning environment preferences. Participants indicated that attending the virtual high schools helped them to learn time management skills, which transferred to their skills in college. Participants had a variety of learning environment preferences, and felt there were benefits to both online and face-to-face classes. The social themes were involvement and homeschooling misconceptions. Participants believed that involvement was key to success in virtual high schools, and staying involved in college helped their transitions. Participants also indicated that many peers and faculty had misconceptions that they were homeschooled. The overarching essence of the study revealed a need for more support and understanding of their educational backgrounds. Specifically, the participants perceived a lack of understanding about their backgrounds. Professors, administrators as well as other students could benefit from learning about virtual education. Additional studies following virtual high school graduates throughout their college experiences are needed. Further, forming support networks or programs for them would be beneficial for this student group.

More often than not, researchers have examined phenomena related to military-connected students and their transitional experiences from the perspectives of parents, teachers, school administrators, or stakeholders other than the military-connected student. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study is to describe, from the perspective of the students, the academic experiences of military-connected high school students who transition to different states. Working closely with military-connected students who attend or attended high school in Virginia within the past 4 years, this study utilized purposeful sampling procedures to identify and recruit a diverse group of military-connected high school students (e.g., males, females, various ethnic backgrounds, various rank structures). Using transcriptions gleaned from face-to-face individual interviews, corroborated via participants’ self-recordings of self-reflections and personal creative writing assignments, data were analyzed using coding methodologies and the concepts and procedural guidelines outlined by renowned phenomenologists, Edmund Husserl and Clark Moustakas. At the conclusion of this analysis, three primary themes emerged and are reflective of the true meaning or essence of the military-connected high school students’ experiences: (a) Help Me to Understand and Understand Me to Help, (b) Coping Resources Begins With Me, and (c) Be All You Can See.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the contributing factors that assist African American community college students to persist from remediation, to graduation and transfer to a four-year college or university, and to understand the students' perceptions of their transition experiences better. Schlossberg's (1984, 1995, 2006, 2012) transition theory, self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2002), interactionist theory (Tinto, 1993), and the theory of student involvement (Astin, 1984), provided the theoretical framework for this study. Though degree attainment offers many benefits, many students are challenged to succeed (Griffin, 2006). This research extends to the existing literature and theoretical framework of student persistence. To better understand the experiences of African American students who persisted, the interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was the most suitable methodology for this study. Like phenomenology inquiry, IPA concerns itself with how individuals make sense of their lived experiences. Additionally, IPA involves a detailed examination of each participant's life and experience in the world. To better understand the phenomenon, participants were asked to share experiences, specific events, and practices that supported their transition. According to Smith et al. (2012), the use of a purposive sample of five to six participants is highly recommended. Therefore, the current study included a small but diverse sample of five African American participants, men and women, aged 19-30. The purposive sample in this study included individuals who successfully persisted from remedial education at a Midwest community college, to graduation and transfer to a four-year college or university. Six major findings were identified and included the following: perseverance, patience, pillar, perception, participation, and preparedness (6P's). All of the participants agreed that the 6P's are vital to increasing students' persistence from remediation in community college. The implications of this study are significant, as all students utilized the 6P's through each transition phase of their educational journey. Implications of these findings related to practice, research, leadership, learning, and service were also discussed.

Book excerpt: The transition from high school to university has been associated with decreases in health and wellbeing for some students. The purpose of this qualitative research was to explore the transitional needs and experiences of students leaving high school and entering Western University, to explore how students conceptualize thriving, and to develop a substantive theory of transition and thriving for Western University students. A total of 42 students and 21 staff members from Western University participated in this study. Data were collected through focus groups and individual interviews. Utilizing grounded theory data analysis methods two conceptual models were developed. The first model outlines students' transition experiences, as well as their conceptualization of thriving at university. The data suggest that students tend to be unprepared for the transition to university. The majority of students reported that their transition to university consisted of mostly negative experiences. The second model uses the data and the theoretical frameworks that guided the study to explain the transitional experiences described by students and staff. The model shows that when students transition to university, they actually experience multiple transitions within a short period of time. The data included in the model also show that there are several person-environment tensions and interactions that affect students' transition experiences and thriving outcomes. This study elucidates the factors that affect students as they transition from high school to Western University. The substantive theory generated from the data explains that students enter university with inadequate skills, and with inaccurate knowledge and expectations about university life. As a result of their inadequate preparation students face numerous challenges, the most difficult challenges tend to be time management, making friends, and managing the increased workload. Thriving was conceptualized as achieving academic success, employing effective coping skills, having a positive perspective, engaging in healthy behaviours, gaining connectedness, and occupational participation. This theory is preliminary and further research is needed to validate the theory for generalization to other Canadian universities. The results, however, provide valuable information to guide assessment and further development of potential support services and programs to assist students transitioning to university.

Book excerpt: The current study sought to understand the stress of the eighth grade to high school transition at the International School Bangkok (ISB) and make recommendations for improving this experience. Transitioning from middle school to high school is one of the most stressful events in an adolescent's life due to physiological and social-emotional changes they experience at this time. Twelve students from the American, Thai, Japanese, and Korean communities were followed for their first three high school semesters to understand the difficulties of the middle school to high school transition. These students, along with four counselors at the school, were my Co-Practitioner-Researchers (CPR), and through their experiences, we came to understand the struggles involved in this transition at the ISB. Collection of data in participatory action research (PAR) Cycle 1 was through a transition survey and CPR drawings of the most stressful aspect of the transition, which I clarified in an interview. In PAR Cycle 2, CPR members photographed the most stressful part of the transition, then reaching consensus themes as a group. Students kept a weekly diary of time usage. In PAR Cycle 3, the CPR team completed a survey of the stress of the tenth-grade transition. Interviews with students and counselors were analyzed. Finally, a community learning exchange (CLE) was conducted at the end of Cycle 3 to present the study findings to ISB colleagues. At the CLE, I collected data through Journey Lines and interviews from staff on student stress of the tenth-grade transition. Data analysis indicated that academic stress, time management, social pressures, and student-teacher relationships were the emerging themes in PAR Cycle 1. The same themes, along with internal pressure were evident in PAR Cycle 2. In PAR Cycle 3, university planning, time management, academic grades, and after-school activities, were their primary stressors. The findings of this study provide meaningful information about student stress involved in transitioning from middle school to high school in international schools and offers advice on how to improve this transition.

The focuses of these studies have ranged from students' academic expectations, impact of instructors and implementation of orientation and retention programs. Further, widening university access has resulted in a much more diverse student population. A more diverse student population, coupled with a global economy in need of a well-educated workforce highlighted the importance of universities responding to the successful transition and retention of first-year students. Students' academic expectations and experiences factor largely in students' transition experience. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore how the research participants initially formed their academic expectations and how, due to both positive and negative academic experiences, they re-evaluated and adjusted these academic expectations. This cyclical process, based on one's academic experiences, of forming and re-forming academic expectations was not addressed in the literature. Since there were few studies regarding the complex factors influencing transition to university from the students' perspective, this study utilized a qualitative case study approach. Over the course of their first two years of study, seven participants were interviewed on three different occasions. Based on the findings, students continue to have significant misconceptions regarding university-level academic expectations, required study skills, and the impact of their instructors. It is posited that if accurate information and positive experiences do not clarify these misconceptions, students may disengage and withdraw from university. This study makes a number of recommendations for potential university students, high schools, and instructors and universities to support and facilitate a more successful transition experience.
