Download or read book To Walk in the Dark written by John Ellis and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the bloody years of the First English Civil War, as the battles of Edgehill, Newbury and Naseby raged, another war was being fought. Its combatants fought with cunning and deceit, a hidden conflict that nevertheless would steer the course of history. The story of the spies and intelligence-gatherers of the Roundheads and Royalists is one that sheds new light on the birth of the Commonwealth. In 'To Walk in the Dark', intelligence specialist John Ellis presents the first comprehensive analysis of the First English Civil War intelligence services. He details the methods of the Roundhead spies who provided their army commanders with a constant flow of information about the movements of the King's armies, describes the earliest use of code-breaking and mail interception and shows how the Cavalier intelligence forces were overcome. He also reveals the intelligence personnel themselves: the shadowy spymasters, agents and femmes fatales. The descriptions of how intelligence information was used in the main Civil War battles are particularly fascinating and show - for the first time - how intelligence information played a decisive role in determining the outcome of the Civil War itself.

Book excerpt: This book explores the emergence of the nationally diverging paths taken by England and Germany in relation to the legal concept of self-defence. It explores how various theories of legitimate resistance to authority were developed and how they came to influence one another. In particular it is argued that German theories played a much greater role than has hitherto been acknowledged in influencing English concepts of 'natural rights' as discussed by such men as Parker and Locke.

Book Synopsis John Poyer, the Civil Wars in Pembrokeshire and the British Revolutions by : Lloyd Bowen
Download or read book John Poyer, the Civil Wars in Pembrokeshire and the British Revolutions written by Lloyd Bowen and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length treatment of the ‘turncoat’ John Poyer, the man who initiated the Second Civil War through his rebellion in south Wales in 1648. The volume charts Poyer’s rise from a humble glover in Pembroke to become parliament’s most significant supporter in Wales during the First Civil War (1642–6), and argues that he was a more complex and significant individual than most commentators have realised. Poyer’s involvement in the poisonous factional politics of the post-war period (1646–8) is examined, and newly discovered material demonstrates how his career offers fresh insights into the relationship between national and local politics in the 1640s, the use of print and publicity by provincial interest groups, and the importance of local factionalism in understanding the course of the civil war in south Wales. The volume also offers a substantial analysis of Poyer’s posthumous reputation after his execution by firing squad in April 1649.
