A gyrotron oscillator experiment with an overmoded open confocal resonator was also run at a peak power of up to 83 kW at 136 GHz with an efficiency of 16%. The gyrotron oscillator experiment had excellent mode stability which makes an oversized quasioptical open confocal resonator a candidate for use in high frequency millimeter and sub-millimeter wave gyrotrons. A second harmonic confocal gyrotron experiment was also tried at 280 GHz but the poor quality electron beam prevented the generation of the second harmonic, however, the stronger fundamental mode interaction was suppressed thus validating the advantages of using confocal resonators in high harmonic gyrotrons to suppress the stronger fundamental interaction. The experiments on three millimeter wave VEDs with two novel kinds of highly oversized interaction structures described in this work have demonstrated a novel technique for building high power (> 1 kW) high frequency (> 100 GHz) VEDs.

Book excerpt: A gyrotron traveling-wave amplifier (gyro-TWT) with the high-power and broad-band capabilities is considered as a turn-on key for next generation high-resolution radar. The book presents the most advanced theory, methods and physics in a gyro-TWT. The most challenging problem of instability competition has been for the first time addressed in a focused and systematic way and reported via concise states and vivid pictures. The book is likely to meet the interest of researchers and engineers in radar and microwave technology, who would like to study the gyro-TWTs and to promote its application in millimeter-wave radars. Chao-Hai Du and Pu-Kun Liu are both professors at Peking University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory, design and experimental results of a wideband 140 GHz, 1 kW pulsed gyro-traveling wave amplifier are presented. The gyro- TWA operates in the HE(0,6) mode of a novel cylindrical confocal waveguide using a gyrating electron beam. The electromagnetic theory, interaction theory, design processes and experimental procedures have been described in detail. The experiment has produced over 820 W peak power, 34 dB linear gain, and a -3 dB bandwidth of over 1.5 GHz (1.1%) from a 37 kV, 2.7 A electron beam having a beam pitch factor of 0.6, radius of 1.9 mm and calculated perpendicular momentum spread of approximately 9%. The gyro-amplifier was nominally operated at a pulse length of 2 microseconds, but was tested to amplify pulses as short as 4 nanoseconds with no noticeable pulse broadening. Internal reflections in the amplifier were identified using these short pulses by time-domain reflectometry. A novel internal mode converter was designed for this device that transforms the confocal HE(0,6) fields into a fundamental Gaussian beam for ultra-low loss transmission of the millimeter wave output power through a corrugated transmission line. The demonstrated performance of this amplifier shows that it can be applied to Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy.

Book Synopsis Theory and Single Wave Simulation of the Gyrotron Traveling Wave Amplifier Operating at Cyclotron Harmonics by : K. R. Chu
Download or read book Theory and Single Wave Simulation of the Gyrotron Traveling Wave Amplifier Operating at Cyclotron Harmonics written by K. R. Chu and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cyclotron maser interaction in a waveguide structure at the harmonics of the cyclotron frequencies has been studied in detail both analytically and with numerical simulations. An idealized cold beam, single wave model has been assumed and investigated using the relativistic Vlasov and Maxwell equations. Analytical scaling relations for the growth rate and efficiency have been derived and extensive simulation data obtained. Emphasis has been placed on methods of parameter optimization for maximizing beam to wave energy conversion efficiency. Beam frame efficiencies in the vicinity of 20% and 10% have been found for the third and fourth cyclotron harmonics, respectively. These results are capable of yielding preliminary design data for gyrotron traveling wave amplifiers. However, it should be noted that a number of important practical problems such as competition between spurious modes have not been considered in the context of the present single wave analysis. Furthermore, requirements on magnetic field uniformity and electron thermal spread become more stringent as cyclotron harmonic number increases and thus the realization of suitable experimental conditions may be expected to become increasingly difficult. Book Synopsis A Gyrotron-Traveling-Wave Tube Amplifier Experiment with a Ceramic Loaded Interaction Region by :
Download or read book A Gyrotron-Traveling-Wave Tube Amplifier Experiment with a Ceramic Loaded Interaction Region written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and experimental study of a 35-GHz gyrotron-traveling-wave tube (gyro-TWT) amplifier operating in the circular TE01 mode at the fundamental cyclotron harmonic are presented. The interaction circuit in this experiment consisted of a new type of ceramic loading that provided the required loss for stable operation. A saturated peak power of 137 kW was measured at 34.1 GHz, corresponding to a saturated gain of 47.0 dB and an efficiency of 17%, with a -3-dB bandwidth of 1.11 GHz (3.3%). Peak output powers in the range of 102.1 to 148.6kW with -3-dB bandwidths of 1.26 and 0.94 GHz, respectively, were measured by varying the operating parameters. The gyro-TWT was found to be zero-drive stable at these operating points, demonstrating that ceramic loading is a highly effective means of suppressing spurious oscillations in gyro-TWTs. This type of ceramic loading has the added advantage of being compatible with high average power operation.
