Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using activator adjuvants with agrochemicals to improve their bioefficacy is an important practice in agriculture. Adjuvants--mostly crop oil concentrates--are needed to ensure the bioefficacy of herbicides from the class of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (Accase) inhibitors. Because of regulatory pressure from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the development and testing of drift technologies has come to the forefront of U.S. application research in the past few years. However, the majority of the drift control agents on the market aim only to reduce the percentage of fine droplets in the spray spectra. There is a strong market need to combine both activator and delivery technology to develop a dual-function adjuvant. The objective of this research was to develop a novel penetrator adjuvant with built-in drift control properties. The adjuvant was based on a crop oil concentrate (COC). Spray droplet spectra for the new adjuvant were determined in still-air conditions using a Sympatec Helos laser diffraction particle size analyzer. The biological effects of this new adjuvant were investigated in comparison to a commercial COC, Agri-Dex, in greenhouse bioassays using fluazifop on green foxtail (Setaria viridis) and clethodim on barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli). The novel COC affected green foxtail and barnyardgrass similarly as the traditional COC, but at half the typical COC rate. In addition, the new adjuvant significantly reduced the percentage of fine droplets (

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are several types of drift-reduction technology (DRT) adjuvants commercially available. Natural and synthetic water-soluble polymers function by increasing extensional or shear viscosity. These polymers do a very good job reducing fines, but they can significantly increase volume median diameter (VMD) and broaden the particle-size distribution (PSD). Oil-based products produce emulsions that function to keep small spray drops from forming during the atomization process. A novel DRT adjuvant chemistry has been discovered that reduces fines without increasing VMD or broadening PSD significantly. This novel chemistry is lipophilic surfactants. These surfactants were tank mixed with a glyphosate dilution and their spray PSD was measured using a Sympatec HELOS/KF laser diffraction particle-size analyzer. The experimental procedure followed ASTM Standard Test Method E2798-11 ["Characterization of Performance of Spray Drift Reduction Adjuvants for Ground Application," Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Volume 11.05, ASTM International, West Conshohocken, PA, 2011]. The standard uses measurements of particle-size distribution generated when the spray-tank mixture includes the pesticide formulation. The lipophilic surfactant used in this study was an alcohol alkoxylate. This surfactant significantly reduced fines by 40 % to 50 %, and it narrowed the particle-size distribution.

Book excerpt: Products based on co-polymers of glycerol, at least one dicarboxylic and one monocarboxylic acid, act as dispersing agents and/or adjuvants in various soluble liquid formulations. Because of the hydrophilicity of the polyglycerol chain, use of these products is typical in water-based formulations. Presenting novel derivatives of this cross-linked co-polymer that has high oil solubility, for example, in alkyl esters of fatty acids, is the goal of this study. One such derivative is a mixture with methylated seed oil (MSO) and is able to be used in oil-based formulations or as tank-mix adjuvant with or without further wetting agents or other components. The new product, referred to as a novel adjuvant (NOVAD) in this study, has no hazardous labeling, is based on renewable resources, and will fulfill any criteria for environmentally friendly adjuvants. Thus, NOVAD is a sustainable product with wide use potential in crop protection. Both components of the product are adjuvants and we will demonstrate the property as an enhancer of penetration of various model compounds and selected active ingredients in this study. The product acts as a foliar penetration enhancer in particular, because the mobility of active ingredients in the plant cuticle is rapidly increased and active availability in the deposit is high. Plant compatibility indications are excellent across all major grain and fiber crops, as well as various fruit crops, vegetable crops, and ornamental plants. NOVAD's plant compatibility is superior to other MSO or non-ionic surfactant adjuvants having the same attribute as a powerful penetration enhancer. The basic product properties are flexibly adapted in accordance with the major use as in-can or tank-mix adjuvant for the respective crop or indication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of novel organosilicon- and lecithin-based adjuvants that contain different sources and types of lecithin was prepared. We investigated how lecithins influence the properties of the organosilicon surfactant such as spreading and dynamic surface tension. We also investigated how variations in the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) of the lecithin component affected the stability of the adjuvant spray solution, as well as the impact on spray drift reduction, droplet adhesion, and herbicide uptake. The lecithins antagonized the spreading and increased the surface tension of the organosilicon surfactant, and this response was not altered by variations in the HLB of the lecithin component. On the other hand, 2,4-D dimethylamine uptake and spray drift reduction with glyphosate-isopropylamine was affected by the HLB of the lecithin source. Overall, these results indicate that this new adjuvant works as a penetrant that can enhance droplet adhesion, drift control, and herbicide uptake.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drift Reduction Agent has been defined in ASTM Standard E1519 Terminology Relating to Agricultural Tank Mix Adjuvants as "a material used in liquid spray mixtures to reduce spray drift." ASTM Standard E609 Terminology Relating to Pesticides defines drift as "the physical movement of an agrochemical through the air at the time of application or soon thereafter to any non- or off-target site. Drift shall not include movement to non- or off-target sites caused by erosion, migration, volatility or wind blown soil particles that occur after application unless specifically advertised on the label." Because there are many commercial tank mix adjuvants designed to reduce spray drift, there is a need to establish an ASTM Standard Test Method to evaluate their effectiveness. ASTM Standard E2798 is the new test method developed for the Characterization of Performance of Pesticide Spray Drift Reduction Adjuvants for Ground Application. This paper presents the data generated from the round-robin testing of this method. The method provides guidelines for the measurement of parameters pertaining to the performance of drift reduction adjuvants under simulated field application conditions. The measurements can be made in a wind tunnel or a spray chamber. The method describes the preparation, composition, and test/application conditions for droplet size, spray pattern measurements, and fines reduction. The exact selection of application conditions such as nozzle type and tank mix partner may vary according to the intended use conditions.
