Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte Bronte and Her Circle Dear miss nussey, - We had not seen the article in Sharpe, and very possibly should not, if you had not directed our attention to it. We ordered a copy, and have now read the Few Words about Jane Eyre. The writer has certainly made many mistakes, but apparently not from any unkind motive, as he professes to be an admirer of Charlotte's works, pays a just tribute to her genius, and in common with thousands deplores her untimely death. His design seems rather to be to gratify the curiosity of the multitude in reference to one who had made such a sensation in the literary world. But even if the article had been of a less harmless character, we should not have felt inclined to take any notice of it, as by doing so we should have given it an importance which it would not other wise have obtained. Charlotte herself would have acted thus; and her character stands too high to be injured by the state ments in a magazine of small circulation and little influence statements which the writer prefaces with the remark that he does not vouch for their accuracy. The many laudatory notices of Charlotte and her works which appeared since her death may well make us indifferent to the detractions of a few envious or malignant persons, as there ever will be such. In a letter to Miss Wooler, dated January 27 th, 1858, Charlotte Bronte wrote: "Villette is to be published to-morrow. Its appearance has been purposely delayed hitherto, to avoid discourteous clashing with Mrs. Gaskell's new work." The story was received, as its writer's friend and biographer tells us, "with one burst of acclamation"; but the laudatory notices only served to make the author's heart "swell with thankfulness to Him who takes note both of suffering, and work, and motives." But it seemed fated that each of her books should bring with it some jar in friendship or some disappointment in expectation. "Jane Eyre was the centre of a very vortex of discussion; "Shirley" touched for its writer the weakness in Greorge Henry Lewes's character; and now "Villette" brought forth a review in the Daily News which disappointed her in Harriet Martineau. Book excerpt: Embark on a journey of resilience, romance, and self-discovery with Charlotte Brontë's timeless classic, "Jane Eyre." Set against the moody and atmospheric backdrop of 19th-century England, this beloved novel follows the life of Jane Eyre, an orphaned girl who overcomes adversity to forge her own path in a world often harsh and unforgiving. From her bleak childhood under the care of her cruel aunt to her years at the austere Lowood School, Jane's spirit remains unbroken. As she matures into a strong and independent young woman, she takes a position as a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she meets the enigmatic and brooding master, Mr. Rochester. Despite the stark differences in their social status, a passionate and complex romance blossoms between them, testing Jane's convictions and resolve. "Jane Eyre" is more than just a romance-it's a profound exploration of themes such as morality, social criticism, and the struggle for personal integrity and equality. Brontë's rich, evocative prose and deeply psychological characterizations make this novel an enduring masterpiece that continues to captivate and inspire readers. Join Charlotte Brontë on an unforgettable journey through the trials and triumphs of "Jane Eyre." With its strong, relatable heroine, dramatic plot twists, and timeless exploration of love and identity, this classic novel remains a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit and the enduring quest for self-respect and emotional fulfillment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems by Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte The Bronte sisters published aw, in 1846, a little volume of verse with tire erie - Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. This, however, was only a selection from their manuscripts, and much remained. Charlotte Bronte, in 1850, after the death of her sisters, Emily and Anne, revised their novels, Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey, for a second edition. She included in this edition a few poems selected from the mass of their manuscripts. In the Preface to these volumes, dated September 19, 1850, she tells of the circumstance under which their first volume was published, and in a note to the poetical selections she apologizes for printing the poems which included some of Emily's, written when quite young and says. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte Bronte the Woman: A Study Here is an extract from a letter written to Ellen Nussey when Charlotte was in her last situation as governess. The Taylors had written to her from Brussels, and it is almost a premonition of what life awaited her there. I hardly know what swells to my throat as I read her (mary Taylor's) letter: such a vehement impatience of restraint and steady work; such a strong wish for wings, wings such as wealth can furnish; such an earnest thirst to see, to know, to learn; something internal seemed to expand bodily for a minute. I was tantalised by the consciousness of faculties unexercised - then all collapsed and I despaired These rebellious and absurd emotions were only momentary; I quelled them in five minutes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte Bronte, 1816-1916: A Centenary Memorial But what is unanimous, is not so much the warm praise of Charlotte Bronte, in which this band of writers, from their various points of View, ultimately agree, as the testimony they bear to the feeling she still stirs in us - to the delight she still gives to this later generation, after more than half a century. The security of her fame, we see, is, yearly greater, as her star rises surely and steadily to its place in the nineteenth-century heaven. Fluctuations of opinion there have been, and must always be, in the case of those who, like the Brontes, challenge opinion, and, so to speak, take it by force. But it seems to me that the fluctuations are over, and the verdict given. And the members of the Bronte Society, during the last twentyilyears, have certainly helped to make it what it is. Their unworthy President bids them now a grateful farewell. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte Bronte at Home His simple narrative of the domestic life of Charlotte Bronte is as careful and patient as conscience and affection could make it. When practicable, l verified by personal investigation what I had heard and read. When dependent upon information received from others, I consulted what seemed to me the ablest authorities upon a subject which has been treated by many, with more or less skill. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Charlotte Bronte, Vol. 1 of 2: Author of "Jane Eyre," "Shirley," "Villette," &C The Leeds and Bradford railway runs along a deep valley of the Aire; a slow and sluggish stream, compared to the neighbouring river of Wharfe. Keighley station is on this line of railway, about a quarter of a mile from the town of the same name. The number of inhabitants and the importance of Keighley have been very greatly increased during the last twenty years, owing to the rapidly extended market for worsted manufactures, a branch of industry that mainly employs the factory population of this part of Yorkshire, which has Bradford for its centre and metropolis. Keighley is in process of transformation from a populous, old-fashioned village, into a still more populous and flourishing town.
