Book excerpt: 'There was nowhere the smell enveloped you as it did at Glasgow Cross. At that interchange of roads and cultures, the smells came in great swathes... if you had your eyes closed you could tell almost exactly where you were.' For Michael Meighan, all the most vivid boyhood memories are inseparably mingled with the potent scents of Glasgow's streets. Through heady description of each of these odours, Michael returns to the city where he grew up in the 1950s and '60s, revisiting the people and places he knew as a child. Beginning in the dimly-lit rooms of Davy Ireland's tobacconist ship, amongst acrid smoke and the aroma of freshly printed news, travelling via the Glasgow tram, reeking of leather and electricity, and along the pungent docks and fish market, the book winds its way through the city. Seen through the eyes of a child and illustrated with original sketches and archive photographs, the book offers a unique perspective on all the most famous locations in Glasgow that will captivate anyone who knows the city.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a wonderfully colourful and deeply poignant memoir of growing up in a 'single end' - one room in a Glasgow tenement - during and immediately after the Second World War. Although young Robert Douglas's life was blighted by the cruel if sporadic presence of his father, it was equally blessed by the love of his mother, Janet. While the story of their life together is in some ways very sad, it is also filled with humorous and happy memories. "Night Song of The Last Tram" is a superb evocation of childhood and of a Glasgow of trams and tenements that has long since disappeared.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What a variety are pictured here! Double deck ‘balloon’ cars, single deckers including open topped cars and various illuminated cars, a specialty of the town.” —York Model Engineers newsletter In the early 1930s the tramcar in Blackpool was at a crossroads; the system needed investment in both new track and new trams while there was a serious threat that the “town” routes might be converted to bus operation. The appointment of Walter Luff as the new general manager was, however, to prove a turning point. Working closely with English Electric, based in nearby Preston, Luff developed a series of streamlined trams—both single-deck and double-deck—that were to revolutionize the town’s tramway. By the end of 1930s, the corporation had acquired more than 100 new trams—the majority built by English Electric but with twenty coming from Brush—that ensured the survival not only of the key route along the Promenade to Fleetwood but also of the bulk of the “town” routes. Over the next seventy years these trams were to form the cornerstone of the Blackpool system. It was only with the modernization of the system in the first decade of the 20th century that, finally, they became largely obsolete but still, as part of the heritage fleet, they remain very much part of the contemporary Blackpool scene. This book examines the history of Blackpool’s streamlined trams of the 1930s from development through to preservation. “An important addition to the more straightforward business and picture book histories of the Blackpool tram network which local historians and industrial archaeologists will find of great value aiding future studies of this subject.” —Transactions of the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society

Now, we follow his escape from the Forces (until National Service a few years later!), his return to Glasgow and life down the pit. Once more, Robert's fantastic memory for people, places and anecdotes, combined with an ear for individual voices and the brilliant ability to evoke a bygone sense of community, will enchant his readers and sometimes appal them with the brutality of conditions he experienced.

Book excerpt: Automobility and the City in Twentieth-Century Britain and Japan is the first book to consider how mass motorization reshaped cities in Japan and Britain during the 20th century. Taking two leading 'motor cities', Nagoya and Birmingham, as their principal subjects, Simon Gunn and Susan C. Townsend show how cars changed the spatial form and individual experience of the modern city and reveal the similarities and differences between Japan and Britain in adapting to the 'motor age'. The book has three main themes: the place of automobility in post-war urban reconstruction; the emerging conflict between the promise of mobility and personal freedom offered by the car and its consequences for the urban environment (the M/E dilemma); and the extent to which the Anglo-Japanese comparison can throw light on fundamental differences in cultural understanding of the environment, urbanism and the self. The result is the first comparative history of mass automobility and its environmental consequences between East and West.
