Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical models were developed for the linearized pressure-coupled and velocity-coupled combustion response functions of composite propellants. The theory is that compositional fluctuations occur in the course of composite propellant burning, that these fluctuations originate from the inherent heterogeneity of the propellant microstructure, and that they will contribute to the nonsteady combustion under oscillating pressure (and velocity) conditions. Properties of the response to compositional fluctuations were determined and compared with responses to pressure and velocity fluctuations in series of parametric studies. The response to compositional fluctuations was found to be relatively strong response. Each response tended to increase with increasing AP particle size and pressure, and with decreasing mean crossflow velocity. A series of experiments was carried out with three propellants to determine whether or not certain features of the microstructure could be measured and correlated with response function behavior. Additional tasks pertaining to nonlinear combustion response and high frequency combustion response were performed and are described in the text. A list of publication generated by or in the course of this program is presented.
Book Synopsis Theory of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion by : Vasily B. Novozhilov

This book was released on 2020-08-21 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite significant developments and widespread theoretical and practical interest in the area of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion for the last fifty years, a comprehensive and authoritative text on the subject has not been available. Theory of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion fills this gap by summarizing theoretical approaches to the problem within the framework of the Zeldovich-Novozhilov (ZN-) theory. This book contains equations governing unsteady combustion and applies them systematically to a wide range of problems of practical interest. Theory conclusions are validated, as much as possible, against available experimental data. Theory of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion provides an accurate up-to-date account and perspectives on the subject and is also accompanied by a website hosting solutions to problems in the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics and Chemistry of Solid Propellants is a collection of papers presented at the Fourth Symposium on Naval Structural Mechanics, held in Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana on April 19-21, 1965 under the joint sponsorship of the Office of Naval Research and Purdue University. The contributors consider the development and utilization of solid propellants. This book is composed of 22 chapters that cover the many branches of studies that touch upon the science and technology of solid propellants. Some chapters present the mathematical and physical theories underlying the behavior of solid propellants, such as nonlinear and linear theories of viscoelasticity. Other chapters are devoted to advances in solid propellant binder chemistry; combustion and its effects on the structural integrity of the solid propellant grain; and design and other engineering problems. This book will be of value to scientists, engineers, and researchers who are interested in the diverse applications of solid propellants.
Book Synopsis The Dynamics of Solid Propellant Combustion by : Luigi De Luca

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nonlinear stability analysis of solid rocket propellant burning was carried out, within the framework of a thermal theory for thin (quasi-steady gas phase) heterogeneous flames. This required an integral method in reducing the partial differential equation for the condensed phase heat conduction to an approximate ordinary differential equation. A nonlinear algebraic function, called static restoring function, was found that contains all basic properties of equilibrium and stability of burning solid propellants. This function depends on the nature of the solid propellant (including its flame) and the operating conditions. Analysis of the static restoring function reveals the existence of lower and upper burning stabilities. Nonlinear static and dynamic burning stability boundaries were determined and stability properties of several unsteady flame models were compared. Domains of stationary reacting solutions, damped oscillatory burning, self-sustained oscillatory burning, non sustained burning were singled out. Pressure deflagration limit was evaluated. Validity and plausible extensions of this theory are discussed. Most of the analytical predictions were verified by computer simulated burning tests. Experimental results obtained in shock tube apparatus, depressurization strand burner, laser doppler velocimetry rig are presented. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The asymptotic model equations are then discretized using the Crank-Nicolson finite difference method and a direct numerical simulation of the asymptotic equations is carried out for certain parameter combinations. Lastly, the numerical results are compared with the analytical predictions and it is shown that for much of the physical parameter space the analytical and numerical solutions agree. In the physical parameter regimes where the analytical results predict supercritical Hopf bifurcations the slow-time amplitude functions are shown to approach orbits of finite radius in the complex plane where their limit cycle radius and rate of approach is dependent on problem parameters and possibly the initial conditions.

This book was released on 2008-09-26 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern energetic materials include explosives, blasting powders, pyrotechnic m- tures and rocket propellants [1, 2]. The study of high-temperature decomposition of condensed phases of propellants and their components (liquid, solid and hybrid) is currently of special importance for the development of space-system engineering [3, 4]. To better understand the burning mechanisms (stationary, nonstationary, - steady) of composite solid propellants and their components, information about the macrokinetics of their high-temperature decomposition is required [5]. To be able to evaluate the ignition parameters and conditions of safe handling of heat-affected explosives, one needs to know the kinetic constants of their high-temperature - composition. The development of new composite solid propellants characterized by high performance characteristics (high burning rates, high thermal stability, stability to intrachamber perturbations, and other aspects) is not possible without quanti- tive data on the high-temperature decomposition of composite solid propellants and their components [6]. The same reasons have resulted in signi?cant theoretical and practical interest in the high-temperature decomposition of components of hybrid propellants. It is known that hybrid propellants have not been used very widely due to the low bu- ing (pyrolysis) rates of the polymer blocks in the combustion chambers of hybrid rocket engines. To increase the burning rates it is necessary to obtain information about their relationships to the corresponding kinetic and thermophysical prop- ties of the fuels.

Book Synopsis Mechanism of Combustion of Heterogeneous Solid Propellants by :
Download or read book Mechanism of Combustion of Heterogeneous Solid Propellants written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the research is to establish the processes in solid propellant combustion that control steady and nonsteady combustion rate (composite propellants). The practical goal is to: 1. Tailor burning rate by variation of formulation (oxidizer particle size, ballistic modifiers, and choice of binders). This includes learning what processes lead to low or negative sensitivity of burning rate to pressure increase (plateau and mesa burning). 2. Determine steps in the combustion process that are most responsive to oscillatory flows (combustion instability). 3. Evaluate the combustion characteristics of new oxidizer and binder ingredients, and of propellants that include new ingredients (and compare results with those of AP oxidizer and Ap/hydrocarbon binder propellants). 4. Develop a realistic qualitative model of the combustion process that would identify the requirements for formulation of realistic analytical models.
