We consider price adjustment processes in exchange economies and strategy adjustment processes in noncooperative games. In the most simple version of an exchange economy, i.e. a pure exchange economy, there exist markets on which prices are determined by the demand and supply created by a finite number of consumers willing to exchange their initial endowments in order to maximize their utilities. An equilibrium situation is attained if, for some price vector, demand equals supply in all markets. Starting from a situation not being an equi librium an adjustment process reaches an equilibrium via adaptations of prices. The advantage of the adjustment processes we will present in this monograph is that they exist and converge under far weaker assumptions than existing processes. The second subject concerns the problem of finding Nash equilibria in noncooperative games. A Nash equilibrium is a situation from which no player can improve his position by unilaterally changing his strategy. We present a new algorithm for finding such equilibria. The sequence of stra tegy vectors generated by the algorithm can be interpreted as the path followed by a strategy adjustment process.

Book excerpt: By offering a critical assessment of the evolution of standard game theory, this book argues for a shift in the ontology and methodology of game theory for appraising games, one based on understanding the players’ strategic reasoning process. Analyzing the history of economic thought, the book highlights the methodological issues faced by standard game theory in its treatment of strategic reasoning and the consequence it has on the status of players’ beliefs. It also highlights how the two original contributions of T. C. Schelling and M. Bacharach can be applied to these issues. Furthermore, the book assesses the intersubjective dimension in games by applying the cognitive sciences and by integrating simulation theory into game theory. Consequently, this book offers an interdisciplinary approach for reassessing the nature of the intersubjectivity involved in strategic reasoning. It shows that the analysis of games should involve the study and identification of the reasoning process that leads the players to a specific outcome, i.e., to a specific solution. A game should not be understood (as is done in standard game theory) as a mathematical representation of an individual choice at equilibrium. This requires investigating the players’ capacity for coordination. Understanding the process of coordination allows us to understand strategic reasoning and ultimately to provide new answers to the indeterminacy problem, one of the central hurdles in game theory, and one that underscores its normative difficulties.

The starting point was the introduction of the adaptive strategy called regret-matching, which on the one hand is simple and natural, and on the other is shown to lead to correlated equilibria. This initial finding OCo boundedly rational behavior that yields fully rational outcomes in the long run OCo generated a large body of work on the dynamics of simple adaptive strategies. In particular, a natural condition on dynamics was identified: uncoupledness, whereby decision-makers do not know each other''s payoffs and utilities (so, while chosen actions may be observable, the motivations are not). This condition turns out to severely limit the equilibria that can be reached. Interestingly, there are connections to the behavioral and neurobiological sciences and also to computer science and engineering (e.g., via notions of OC regretOCO).Simple Adaptive Strategies is self-contained and unified in its presentation. Together with the formal treatment of concepts, theorems, and proofs, significant space is devoted to informal explanations and illuminating examples.
