Book excerpt: The vision that culture has historically offered about reality has failed to help humans to live fully or to achieve their potential. A knowledge revolution has been taking place in recent years that, once it is understood, can completely transform human beings, offering new solutions to personal and collective problems because their root causes have been identified at last. What we now know means that we can understand spiritual truths and their multiple dimensions without abandoning rationality. This new vision is strong enough to put an end to human suffering and boost inner peace, which is for what every being human yearns. New science sees an intelligent design in the whole Universe. Quantum physics has revolutionized our knowledge of reality. All scientists are now aware of the quantum "enigmas" but not everyone agrees on how to interpret them. This book offers an interpretation that might explain them, and one that is based on the idea of "science within consciousness". As you read the book, it will become evident that this interpretation most closely resembles the vision of reality that both the perennial wisdom of Humanity and the teachings of the great spiritual masters have offered us throughout history. The first part of the book outlines briefly what some of the leading thinkers on science and philosophy have to say about reality and how this new vision of the world is converging with what the perennial wisdom of Humanity has been saying throughout our history. The second part seeks to explain what can happen to us when we are exposed to this new knowledge and how all of us can change inside ourselves in the light of this information. This book aims to unite, not divide, helping Humanity to raise its level of consciousness, allowing us to live a higher quality life in accordance with our spiritual dimension.

Book excerpt: Ervin Laszlo's tour de force, What is Reality?, is the product of a half-century of deep contemplation and cutting-edge scholarship. Addressing many of the paradoxes that have confounded modern science over the years, it offers nothing less than a new paradigm of reality, one in which the cosmos is a seamless whole, informed by a single, coherent consciousness manifest in us all. Bringing together science, philosophy, and metaphysics, Laszlo takes aim at accepted wisdom, such as the dichotomies of mind and body, spirit and matter, being and nonbeing, to show how we are all part of an infinite cycle of existence unfolding in spacetime and beyond. Augmented by insightful commentary from a dozen scholars and thinkers, along with a foreword by Deepak Chopra and an introduction by Stanislav Grof, What is Reality? offers a fresh and liberating understanding of the meaning and purpose of existence.

Book excerpt: The New Paradigm begins by extolling Science and what it has done for us. Then, in Chapter 2, the consequences of our short-sighted acceptance of the comforts of the present are shown to make it unlikely that the West can survive this century. Exhaustion of resources and overpopulation are the principal reasons. In Chapters 4 and 5, it is shown that our present beliefs in the foundations of science are ill-based; most of those secure foundations are by now shaking with doubt. Then follows the essence of the book. In Chapters 5, 6, 7 and 8 there is presented evidence for the acceptance of the reality of Telepathy and Precognition; of ghosts of people; of the ability of some to leave the body whilst still alive; of experiences when very near to death which seem to be independent of the experiencer's religion. These involve the experience of an intense feeling of love, of the evaluation of your life, etc. The most frequent beginning to such experiences involves the observation of the patient on the death bed - usually in a hospital operating room - of one's own body from high up near the ceiling. After that, the evidence for Reincarnation in new bodies is given. In Chapter 9 is a detailed discussion of what CONSCIOUSNESS means. In this chapter comes a statement of the evidence for a Biofield to explain the ability of some to show that they can change their surroundings by the power of their mind. In the last chapter, some conclusions are given and an approach to a New Paradigm outlined. Humans exist dualistically, the essence of a human is inside his mortal body. This essence is called Consciousness (or the Soul) and it lives on although we do not yet know for how many generations; nor whether this reincarnation applies to all of us. Acceptance of this vital change of outlook, when it spreads to the general population, will cause many changes including the diminishing of Hate and War and an increase in Peace and Love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When BIC, manufacturer of disposable ballpoint pens, wanted to grow, it looked for an idea beyond introducing new sizes and ink colors. Someone suggested lighters. LIGHTERS? With an idea that seemed crazy at first, that bright executive, instead of seeing BIC as a pen company—a business in the PEN “box”—figured out that there was growth to be found in the DISPOSABLE “box.” And he was right. Now there are disposable BIC lighters, razors, even phones. The company opened its door to a host of opportunities. IT INVENTED A NEW BOX. Your business can, too. And simply thinking “out of the box” is not the answer. True ingenuity needs structure, hard analysis, and bold brainstorming. It needs to start THINKING IN NEW BOXES —a revolutionary process for sustainable creativity from two strategic innovation experts from The Boston Consulting Group (BCG). To make sense of the world, we all rely on assumptions, on models—on what Luc de Brabandere and Alan Iny call “boxes.” If we are unaware of our boxes, they can blind us to risks and opportunities. This innovative book challenges everything you thought you knew about business creativity by breaking creativity down into five steps: • Doubt everything. Challenge your current perspectives. • Probe the possible. Explore options around you. • Diverge. Generate many new and exciting ideas, even if they seem absurd. • Converge. Evaluate and select the ideas that will drive breakthrough results. • Reevaluate. Relentlessly. No idea is a good idea forever. And did we mention Reevaluate? Relentlessly. Creativity is paramount if you are to thrive in a time of accelerating change. Replete with practical and potent creativity tools, and featuring fascinating case studies from BIC to Ford to Trader Joe’s, Thinking in New Boxes will help you and your company overcome missed opportunities and stay ahead of the curve. This book isn’t a simpleminded checklist. This is Thinking in New Boxes. And it will be fun. (We promise.) Praise for Thinking in New Boxes “Excellent . . . While focusing on business creativity, the principles in this book apply anywhere change is needed and will be of interest to anyone seeking to reinvent herself.”—Blogcritics “Thinking in New Boxes is a five-step guide that leverages the authors’ deep understanding of human nature to enable readers to overcome their limitations and both imagine and create their own futures. This book is a must-read for people living and working in today’s competitive environment.”—Ray O. Johnson, Ph.D., chief technology officer, Lockheed Martin “Thinking In New Boxes discusses what I believe to be one of the fundamental shifts all companies/brands need to be thinking about: how to think creatively, in order to innovate and differentiate our brands. We need to thrive and lead in a world of accelerating change and this book challenges us to even greater creativity in our thinking. One of the best business books I’ve read in a long time.”—Jennifer Fox, CEO, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts “As impressive as teaching new tricks to old dogs, Thinking in New Boxes is both inspirational and practical—a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to sharpening one’s wits in order to harness creativity in the workplace.”—Peter Gelb, general manager, Metropolitan Opera

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We spend a lot of time thinking about how to better ourselves: our bodies and minds, our lives, our world. It's a natural human inclination. At this point in human history, though, we could use some help. The societies we've created are increasingly destructive, not only to themselves but to the planet. We need a new paradigm--and a way to live it.The journey to a new way of living requires faith, because we can't see where it will lead. However, we're better equipped for this journey than we realize. Anne Wilson Schaef suggests that deep within ourselves--in our cells, in our ancestral blood, in our archaic souls--we have the ancient knowledge we need to find our way. We simply need to remember what we know. In this book, Dr. Schaef uses 30 themes to build cycles of "reminders" that expand and deepen over the course of the year. Through insightful reflections on themes including the Reminder that All Is Process and In Process, while Stressing the Importance of Honesty, Exploring Our Beliefs and Assumptions, Accepting Our Humanness, and Walking in Beauty, we broaden our perspective and open our minds so we can live more fully.

Book excerpt: What if we lived in a world where everyone had enough? A world where everyone mattered and where people lived in harmony with nature? What if the solution to our economic, social, and ecological problems was right underneath our feet? Land has been sought after throughout human history. Even today, people struggle to get onto the property ladder and view real estate as an important way to build wealth. Yet, as the reader will discover through this book, the act of owning land—and our urge to profit from it—causes economic booms and busts, social and cultural decline, and environmental devastation. Book excerpt: Modern mainstream economics is attracting an increasing number of critics of its high degree of abstraction and lack of relevance to economic reality. Economists are calling for a better reflection of the reality of imperfect information, the role of banks and credit markets, the mechanisms of economic growth, the role of institutions and the possibility that markets may not clear. While it is one thing to find flaws in current mainstream economics, it is another to offer an alternative paradigm which, can explain as much as the old, but can also account for the many 'anomalies'. That is what this book attempts. Since one of the biggest empirical challenges to the 'old' paradigm has been raised by the second largest economy in the world - Japan - this book puts the proposed 'new paradigm' to the severe test of the Japanese macroeconomic reality.

Book excerpt: In the midst of the most serious financial upheaval since the Great Depression, legendary financier George Soros explores the origins of the crisis and its implications for the future. Soros, whose breadth of experience in financial markets is unrivaled, places the current crisis in the context of decades of study of how individuals and institutions handle the boom and bust cycles that now dominate global economic activity. “This is the worst financial crisis since the 1930s,” writes Soros in characterizing the scale of financial distress spreading across Wall Street and other financial centers around the world. In a concise essay that combines practical insight with philosophical depth, Soros makes an invaluable contribution to our understanding of the great credit crisis and its implications for our nation and the world.

Book excerpt: The epistemological synthesis of the various theories of evolution, since the first formulation in 1802 with the transmission of the inherited characters by J.B. Lamarck, shows the need for an alternative synthesis to that of Princeton (1947). This new synthesis integrates the scientific models of self-organization developed during the second half of the 20th century based on the laws of physics, thermodynamics, and mathematics with the emergent evolutionary problematics such as self-organized memory. This book shows, how self-organization is integrated in modern evolutionary biology. It is divided in two parts: The first part pays attention to the modern observations in paleontology and biology, which include major theoreticians of the self-organization (d’Arcy Thompson, Henri Bergson, René Thom, Ilya Prigogine). The second part presents different emergent evolutionary models including the sciences of complexity, the non-linear dynamical systems, fractals, attractors, epigenesis, systemics, and mesology with different examples of the sciences of complexity and self-organization as observed in the human lineage, from both internal (embryogenesis-morphogenesis) and external (mesology) viewpoints.

This fear based paradigm has created within human beings a lack of understanding and knowledge of our true potential. Thus what reins is a dependence to look to others outside ourselves to save us from the conditions that we have created by our own choices, which do not align with our inner aspiration to be creators. As a result, human beings have fallen asleep and unconscious to our true power and potential. The time is now to create new breakthroughs in understanding. A New Paradigm for Living will empower you to seek fulfillment and internal growth as a means to create a life of meaning.

Book excerpt: In the late 20th century, there has been a rethinking of the whole concept of development, including a growing awareness of its gender, cultural and environmental dimensions, and the impact of globalization. The contributors to this volume seek to extend these debates to a more fundamental level, tackling such issues as the crisis of development as an intellectual and practical project, the need for a break with development as a Eurocentric concept, and the viability of alternative, non-Western forms of development. The contributors aim to transcend critiques of development which simply engage in a blanket dismissal of the whole enterprise and instead offer ways of re-engaging with reality that, despite globalization, is still a dimension of the late-20th century.
