Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lhasa Apso is a companion breed of dog that originates from Tibet and is believed to be over 4000 years old. In Tibet, the Lhasa Apso is known as the 'Apso Seng Kyl, ' which translates to the 'Bearded Lion Dog.' The breed was developed for the purposes of being a household, or a monetary, sentinel that was tasked with letting people know if any intruders enter the property. The Lhasa Apso has an incredible sense of hearing and a loud sharp bark, which makes it a perfect burglar alarm. Traditionally in Tibet, the Lhasa Apso was never sold and the only way to obtain one was for it to be received as a gift. The Lhasa Apso breed was introduced to the United States of America in 1933, when Thubten Gyatso, 13th Dalai Lama gifted a pair of Lhasa Apso to C. Suydam Cutting. Due to the fact that the Lhasa Apso was developed in incredibly harsh conditions found within the Himalaya region, the breed is surprisingly hardy and long living. The Lhasa Apso is known for its unique looking coat. The breed's coat has a heavy and hard texture and the hairs lie straight. It is considered a fault if a Lhasa Apso coat is wooly or silky to the touch. The breed's coat comes in a wide variety of colorations that includes black, white, red and various shades of gold. Despite the breed having a dense long haired coat it is actually considered to be a hypo-allergenic breed. This is due to the fact that the Lhasa Apso's coat hair is relatively heavy which decreases the chance of airborne hairs, dander and allergens. The Lhasa Apso's coat shed continuously in a similar fashion to human hair. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Lhasa Apso. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Lhasa Apso with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Lhasa Apso is affectionate, intelligent, independent and assertive. The breed is incredibly loyal towards its family unit but is highly suspicious of strangers, due to their history as a sentinel dog. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Lhasa Apso's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Lhasa Apso, raising your Lhasa Apso from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between! "The Lhasa Apso: A Complete and Comprehensive Owners Guide to: Buying, Owning, Health, Grooming, Training, Obedience, Understanding and Caring for Your Lhasa Apso," by Michael Stonewood is the perfect purchase or gift for a first time Lhasa Apso owner. This guide includes sections on caring for a puppy, breeding, health care, training, the basic cost of owning an Lhasa Apso and much more. This book is the second edition - the first edition was published by 'Dog Care Professionals.'

Book excerpt: Written by one of the world's most respected authorities on Tibetan breeds, Juliette Cunliffe, a British native living in Tibet, this introductory guide to the Tibetan Terrier offers a rare look into this mystical canine from Land of Snows. Unlike any other dog, the Tibetan Terrier, a member of the AKC Non-Sporting Group, is not a terrier, but rather a fun-loving companion dog prized for his snowshoed feet, his hardy constitution, and his profuse coat covering his deep brown eyes, giving him an expression that reveals his true exuberant personality. With years of experience as an international judge and owner of the Tibetan breeds, the author provides a complete historical overview of the breed in its native land, where it was regarded as a talisman of great value, as well as in the United Kingdom and the United States. The extensive coverage of the breed in America is accompanied by historical photographs of the dogs that made the most lasting impact on the breed in this country. Filled with color photographs that capture the heart and spirit of this exceptional companion breed, this Comprehensive Owner's Guide provides up-to-date and informative chapters on the breed's characteristics, puppy selection, care, house-training and positive-motivational obedience training, healthcare, and much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Dogs Go to Kevin is a humorous and touching memoir that will appeal to anyone who has ever loved an animal or lost hours in James Herriot's classic veterinary stories. You can't always count on people, but you can always count on your dog. No one knows that better than veterinarian Jessica Vogelsang. With the help of three dogs, Jessica is buoyed through adolescence, veterinary school, and the early years of motherhood. Taffy, the fearsome Lhasa; Emmett, the devil-may-care Golden; and Kekoa, the neurotic senior Labrador, are always by her side, educating her in empathy and understanding for all the oddballs and misfits who come through the vet clinic doors. Also beside her is Kevin, a human friend who lives with the joie de vivre most people only dream of having. From the clueless canine who inadvertently reveals a boyfriend's wandering ways to the companion who sees through a new mother's smiling facade, Jessica's stories from the clinic and life show how her love for canines lifts her up and grounds her, too. Above all, this book reminds us, with gentle humor and honesty, why we put up with the pee on the carpet, the chewed-up shoes, and the late-night trips to the vet: because the animals we love so much can, in fact, change our lives.
