Solving the equation by a numerically method could also be very time-consuming for some problems. Therefore, various approximation methods have been developed for particle transport calculations. In this dissertation, a new Flux-Limited diffusion method (DM) is investigated as a low-order approximation to the transport equation. Specifically, the new Flux-Limited diffusion method (DM) is derived based on the Minerbo maximum entropy Eddington factor and corresponding boundary conditions are developed. Performance of the DM method is tested for a variety of particle transport problems: including steady-state problems, transient problems, one-dimensional problems, two-dimensional problems, flux distribution problems, eigen-value problems, one-group problems, and two-group problems. The tests demonstrate that compared with other approximations, the DM method has the following good features. (1) The DM method is a low order approximation as the classic diffusion method but can improve the accuracy of classic diffusion method by a factor up to 10. (2) The DM method has relatively fast computing speed compared with other high order approximations and its computation cost is not too expensive compared with the classic diffusion method. (3) The DM method can predict proper traveling speed of particles in time-dependent problems. (4) The DM method is valid for neutral particle transport in systems containing strong absorbers, regions near particle sources or boundaries, and systems where strongly anisotropic scattering of particles occur. (5) The DM method is superior to other Flux-Limited diffusion methods available in the literature. (6) The solutions of the DM method are numerically stable in all the circumstances. Overall, the DM method is promising as a low-order approximation for particle transport calculations in some applications.

Book excerpt: It has become increasingly apparent that successful, general methods for the solution of the neutral particle transport equation involve a close connection between the spatial-discretization method used and the source-acceleration method chosen. The first form of the transport equation, angular discretization which is discrete ordinates is considered as well as spatial discretization based upon a mesh arrangement. Characteristic methods are considered briefly in the context of future, desirable developments. The ideal spatial-discretization method is described as having the following attributes: (1) positive-positive boundary data yields a positive angular flux within the mesh including its boundaries; (2) satisfies the particle balance equation over the mesh, that is, the method is conservative; (3) possesses the diffusion limit independent of spatial mesh size, that is, for a linearly isotropic flux assumption, the transport differencing reduces to a suitable diffusion equation differencing; (4) the method is unconditionally acceleratable, i.e., for each mesh size, the method is unconditionally convergent with a source iteration acceleration. It is doubtful that a single method possesses all these attributes for a general problem. Some commonly used methods are outlined and their computational performance and usefulness are compared; recommendations for future development are detailed, which include practical computational considerations.

Book excerpt: Using the technique developed by Chapman and Enskog for deriving the Navier--Stokes equations from the Boltzmann equation, a framework is set up for deriving diffusion theories from the transport equation. The procedure is first applied to give a derivation of isotropic diffusion theory and then of a completely new theory which is naturally flux-limited. This new flux-limited diffusion theory is then compared with asymptotic diffusion theory.

Book excerpt: The linear Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) is an integro-differential equation arising in deterministic models of neutral and charged particle transport. In slab (one-dimensional Cartesian) geometry and certain higher-dimensional cases, Diffusion Synthetic Acceleration (DSA) is known to be an effective algorithm for the iterative solution of the discretized BTE. Fourier and asymptotic analyses have been applied to various idealizations (e.g., problems on infinite domains with constant coefficients) to obtain sharp bounds on the convergence rate of DSA in such cases. While DSA has been shown to be a highly effective acceleration (or preconditioning) technique in one-dimensional problems, it has been observed to be less effective in higher dimensions. This is due in part to the expense of solving the related diffusion linear system. We investigate here the effectiveness of a parallel semicoarsening multigrid (SMG) solution approach to DSA preconditioning in several three dimensional problems. In particular, we consider the algorithmic and implementation scalability of a parallel SMG-DSA preconditioner on several types of test problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spatially discretized diffusion approximation equations are derived directly from spatially discretized radiation transport equations in 1-D slab geometry. Derivations for isotropic diffusion theory (IDT) and Levermore-Pomraning's flux-limited diffusion theory (FLDT) are applied to lumped linear discontinuous (LLD) transport equations. We find that the (energy density) solution is continuous across the edge for EDT. For FLDT, we find that the intensity may he discontinuous across a cell edge; this doubles the number of points that traditionally need to be solved for in a diffusion approximation. The FLDT derivation produces unique discretized flux-limited diffusion equations. We produced a numerical scheme for these FLDT equations that includes a new iteration on the flux-limiting parameter and a local iteration on the edge discontinuities. Numerical results indicate that this approach is an improvement over standard numerical FLDT discretization schemes.

This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: View factor techniques, and their generalization to time dependent static geometries, for treating neutral particle transport involving free streaming in enclosures are described. An approximation of the standard view factor technique which uses retarded times to treat time-dependent, fixed-geometry, 3-D vacuum enclosures is described. Procedures for the numerical determination of the view factors and the transport calculations themselves are described. The advantages and disadvantages of this technique are discussed. The limitations give rise to a new generalized view factor approach which is discussed in detail. In this technique a functional expansion is made of the unknown emission densities on the surface of the enclosure. The coefficients in the expansion contain the time dependence, if any, of the emission, and the expansion functions describe the areal dependence of the emission. These coefficients enter into a series of coupled linear integral equations which contain quantities that are generalizations of the view factors and depend only on the geometry of the enclosure and the distribution of scattering material contained therein. Monte Carlo techniques are used to estimate the generalized view factors which are then adjusted slightly using the method of maximum likelihood and least squares minimization to satisfy appropriate thermodynamic consistency conditions. After the imposition of suitable initial and boundary conditions, the integral equations involving the expansion coefficients are solved.

Book excerpt: This book describes mathematical formulations and computational methods for solving two-phase flow problems with a computer code that calculates thermal hydraulic problems related to light water and fast breeder reactors. The physical model also handles the particle and gas flow problems that arise from coal gasification and fluidized beds. The second part of this book deals with the computational methods for particle transport.
