Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Book of Poems This new book of poetry has been growing for many years. The Author began to write in a poetical way when about 13 years old. The first poem of some length that came from his hand, was about that beautiful body of fresh water called Lake Erie, that lies between our Country of Liberty and Law and Patriotism, and the British Colony of Canada opposite. The poem was put in print by an Erie newspaper. It was taken up a few years later and published in a book edited by a young gentleman, Mr. Judson, of Waterford, Penna. Afterwards the poetical impulse came upon the present author when a student in College, in 1847. That production appeared in print in a newspaper of the college town. The editor expressed his approval by saying that he would gladly accept for the columns of his paper any further contributions from "the diamond pen" of the same writer. A number of other poetical pieces were written by the author of the present book, and printed in newspapers. But in 1862, the author had a volume published by Carleton, of New York City, bearing the title of "Home and Other Poems." The first intention was to have "Home" republished in the new book that is soon to appear. That idea has been put aside, but a dozen or more of the additional poems in the volume with "Home" will appear in the new book. Excerpt: ... 12 So round his melancholy neck A rope he did entwine, And for the second time in life Enlisted in the Line! 13 One end he tied around a beam, And then removed his pegs, And, as his legs were off, of course He soon was off his legs. 14 And there he hung till he was dead As any nail in town; For, though distress had cut him up, It could not cut him down!--Thomas Hood. BURIAL OF SIR JOHN MOORE Sir John Moore, commanding the British forces in Spain in the war with Napoleon, was killed at the battle of Corunna, Spain, January 16, 1809. The battle occurred at the end of a long and hard retreat, and although the English had the advantage, they embarked at Corunna after the battle and returned to England. The French forces were under Marshal Soult. Alison's History of Europe says that Moore "was wrapped by his attendants in his military cloak and laid in a grave hastily formed on the ramparts of Corunna, where a monument was soon after erected over his uncoffined remains by the generosity of the French Marshal Ney. Not a word was spoken as the melancholy interment by torchlight took place; silently they laid him in his grave, while the distant cannon of the battlefield fired the funeral honors to his memory. "This tomb, originally erected by the French, since enlarged by the British, bears a simple but touching inscription, written of the hero over whose remains it is placed. Few spots in Europe will ever be more the object of general interest. His very misfortunes were the means which procured him immortal fame--his disastrous retreat, bloody death, and finally his tomb on a foreign strand, far from home and friends. There is scarcely a Spaniard but has heard of his tomb and speaks of it with a strange kind of awe." Many fantastic legends have...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old and New: A Collection of Poems These three volumes were issued at my expense. They can hardly be said to have been 'published' in the more liberal sense of the word. Therefore I feel no shame in accepting an invitation to reprint what I believe to be the best of them, and I am even eager to do so, as it gives me an opportunity of revising my work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Anthology of Recent Poetry The best poetry is always about the Earth itself and all the strange and lovely things that compose and inhabit it. When a 'great poet' sets himself the task of some 'big theme' he needs only to hold, as it were, a magnifying glass to the earth. We, who are born and live here, like very much to imagine other worlds, and we have even mentally constructed such another in which to exist after dying on this one; but we were careful to make it a glorified version of our own earth with everything we most love here intensified and improved to the utmost stretch of human imagination. To each man his 'best poetry' is that which he is able most to enjoy. The first object of poetry is to give pleasure.
