Download or read book A New Approach to Teaching Rhythm written by Brett Lobben and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central focus of this capstone was the design and creation of a supplemental rhythm text that could be used in conjunction with a beginning band student's primary method book. It was my feeling that the primary method book was not doing an adequate job of presenting the concept of rhythm to the students. Also, I needed a text that could be used quickly and consistently in small group lessons. My research centered around the purpose and positive qualities of effective assignments as well as appropriate strategies for teaching rhythm to beginning students. The end result was the creation of the rhythm workbook. It contains a variety of strategies for teaching rhythm to the beginning band student. It also has built-in technology-assisted assessment features to gauge student learning in the area of rhythm.

Book excerpt: From Grammy-winning musical icon and legendary bassist Victor L. Wooten comes an inspiring parable of music, life, and the difference between playing all the right notes…and feeling them. The Music Lesson is the story of a struggling young musician who wanted music to be his life, and who wanted his life to be great. Then, from nowhere it seemed, a teacher arrived. Part musical genius, part philosopher, part eccentric wise man, the teacher would guide the young musician on a spiritual journey, and teach him that the gifts we get from music mirror those from life, and every movement, phrase, and chord has its own meaning...All you have to do is find the song inside. “The best book on music (and its connection to the mystic laws of life) that I've ever read. I learned so much on every level.”—Multiple Grammy Award–winning saxophonist Michael Brecker

He strongly believes that you don't have to be 'good at English' to be able to enjoy the music of ordinary speech. Using rhythm and rhyme is a democratic creative act that is equally hard and equally easy for everyone. It has special rules which won't let you reach for the first word that comes into your head. Your words have to fit the pattern. You don't have to write anything down, but you do have to become a writer. And once you have become a writer, you might become a reader...

Book Synopsis An Imaginative Approach to Teaching by : Kieran Egan
Download or read book An Imaginative Approach to Teaching written by Kieran Egan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-02-04 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, award-winning educator Kieran Egan shows how we can transform the experience of K-12 students and help them become more knowledgeable and more creative in their thinking. At the core of this transformative process is imagination which can become the heart of effective learning if it is tied to education's central tasks. An Imaginative Approach to Teaching is a groundbreaking book that offers an understanding of how students' imaginations work in learning and shows how the acquisition of cognitive tools drives students' educational development. This approach is unique in that it engages both the imagination and emotions. The author clearly demonstrates how knowledge comes to life in students' minds if it is introduced in the context of human hopes, fears, and passions. To facilitate this new educational approach, the book includes a wide variety of effective teaching tools - such as story, rhythm, play, opposition, agency, and meta-narrative understanding - that value and build upon the way children understand their experiences. Most important, Egan provides frameworks for lesson planning and more than a dozen sample lessons to show how teachers can use these tools to awaken intelligence and imagination in the classroom.
Book Synopsis Applying Karnatic Rhythmical Techniques to Western Music by : Rafael Reina
Download or read book Applying Karnatic Rhythmical Techniques to Western Music written by Rafael Reina and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most classical musicians, whether in orchestral or ensemble situations, will have to face a piece by composers such as Ligeti, Messiaen, Varèse or Xenakis, while improvisers face music influenced by Dave Holland, Steve Coleman, Aka Moon, Weather Report, Irakere or elements from the Balkans, India, Africa or Cuba. Rafael Reina argues that today’s music demands a new approach to rhythmical training, a training that will provide musicians with the necessary tools to face, with accuracy, more varied and complex rhythmical concepts, while keeping the emotional content. Reina uses the architecture of the South Indian Karnatic rhythmical system to enhance and radically change the teaching of rhythmical solfege at a higher education level and demonstrates how this learning can influence the creation and interpretation of complex contemporary classical and jazz music. The book is designed for classical and jazz performers as well as creators, be they composers or improvisers, and is a clear and complete guide that will enable future solfege teachers and students to use these techniques and their methodology to greatly improve their rhythmical skills. An accompanying website of audio examples helps to explain each technique. For examples of composed and improvised pieces by students who have studied this book, as well as concerts by highly acclaimed karnatic musicians, please copy this link to your browser: http://www.contemporary-music-through-non-western-techniques.com/pages/1587-video-recordings

Book Synopsis Sing a Rhythm, Dance a Blues by : Monique W. Morris
Download or read book Sing a Rhythm, Dance a Blues written by Monique W. Morris and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2022-08-02 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking and visionary call to action on educating and supporting girls of color, from the highly acclaimed author of Pushout, with a foreword by award-winning educational abolitionist Bettina Love Wise Black women have known for centuries that the blues have been a platform for truth-telling, an underground musical railroad to survival, and an essential form of resistance, healing, and learning. In this “powerful call to action” (Rethinking Schools), leading advocate Monique W. Morris invokes the spirit of the blues to articulate a radically healing and empowering pedagogy for Black and Brown girls. Morris describes with candor and love what it looks like to meet the complex needs of girls on the margins. Sing a Rhythm, Dance a Blues is a “vital, generous, and sensitively reasoned argument for how we might transform American schools to better educate Black and Brown girls” (San Francisco Chronicle). Morris brings together research and real life in this chorus of interviews, case studies, and the testimonies of remarkable people who work successfully with girls of color. The result is this radiant guide to moving away from punishment, trauma, and discrimination toward safety, justice, and genuine community in our schools.
