Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Narrative History of the United States, for the Use of Schools Solomon says, "Of making many books there is no end;" and this is especially true of schoolbooks. When, therefore, another schoolbook is added to the vast number already published, it behooves the author to give good and sufficient reasons for its existence. These he proposes to give; but whether they will satisfy the public and his fellow-teachers time alone will tell. First. - The author taught the History of the United States for many years; and he has therefore treated the subject from the standpoint of a teacher. Second. - His experience has enabled him to give due importance to the salient and important events, and to pass over lightly those that are unimportant; or, in other words, he has exercised the teachers duty of selection for the purpose of making the instruction simple and impressive. Third. - The two greatest events of recent times the Revolutionary War, and the War of the Rebellion, each in itself almost a miracle, the former achieving independence, and the latter the perpetuity of the union and the abolition of slavery occupy more than half the volume, and are related mainly in a description of campaigns, north and south, east and west. At the same time, great moral events receive their proper share of attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New History of the United States of America: For the Use of Schools The necessity for some new History of the United States, for the use of schools, has been long felt, and frequently expressed by experienced teachers; and it is with the hope of supplying some of those deficiencies, of which so many complain, that the author has been stimulated to prepare the following work. If any impressive generalization of well-esta blished facts can be presented if an unbroken narrative can be preserved, interesting in its details and instructive in its moral lessons - and, especially, if the youthful mind can be inspired with patriotic sentiments and increased veneration for the principles, labours, and struggles of our ancestors: no more useful contribution to the cause of popular education can possibly be made. Such have been the objects aimed at by the author, and it now remains with the public to decide whether these have been attained. The narrow limits of this history necessarily have prevented as full 3. Description of many interesting events as might be desired; but no fact which has an obvious relation to the progress of the nation has been omitted, and all great characters and actors have been treated in proportion to their importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States for Schools The aim of the authors in writing this book has been to present what seemed to them the main historical developments in American history, the knowledge of which will enable the pupil to understand 'he social, political, and economic institutions which he finds about him in this land wherein he lives. In doing this we have tried to use simple language, to show clearly the relation of one fact to another, and to keep the story constantly moving forward. We have sought to interest not by the selection of the merely entertaining facts which are often the things of least value, but by choice of the facts that have meant something in our growth as a nation. This is first of all a text-book and not a story-book. We make no apology for the omission of many of the yarns of American his tory. If history is worth teaching at all, it is worth teaching as causal, vital, meaning history. We heartily approve of reading his tory for mere pleasure. History is, we believe, in many of its high est literary forms, most delightful and valuable mere reading, but for serious study there are certain essentials which should not be disguised or palliated by facts which are only entertaining, and not essentially significant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School History of the United States It has been the aim of the writer to fulfill this condition. At the same time an attempt has been made to have the narrative vivid in order that the pupil may not escape the impression that American History is an interesting move ment, and that, whether in co6peration or in collision, men are always struggling to attain great ends. This quality seizes upon the human and dramatic feelings of the child and holds his interest in the subject. As a result the people who inhabit the world of history are made akin to those who are in action in the real world around him. To encourage this interest and to enable the pupil to enter more fully into the spirit of the past, important and typical events have been frequently made to stand out vividly by a somewhat full description To impress great historical scenes upon the mind of the young is as important as to paint them on canvas. As a further stimulus to the sympathetic and constructive im agination, and as an appeal to the higher tastes, ten full-page illustrations in colors have been introduced. These illustrate ten of the most dramatic or important events in American History and serve as historical milestones to the pupil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States, for Secondary Schools Twice in the narrative of colonial history - near the close of the seventeenth century and at the opening of the War of Independence - the writer has paused to introduce a comprehensive survey of the economic and social conditions existing in different sections of the country at those times. At the endof the work he has given a retrospective survey of similar conditions as they appear in the rapid flux of later times. These surveys, together with an Introduction, which sketches matters prior to the European settlement of regions within the territory of the United States, are not pre sented as numbered chapters of the book, nor printed in the type of those chapters. The intention is that teachers shall use them for reading and reference, or for regular study in the course, as they find best. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of American History for Elementary Schools Some sort of a first book on American history is now quite generally used in schools as a preparation for the more intelligent study of a larger and more formal text-book in the higher grammar grades. For beginners, a mere compilation of facts is dry and unsatisfactory. Such books have now given place, for the most part, to those prepared on a more attractive and judicious plan. The real aim in a first book should be to interest boys and girls in the history of their country, and to encourage them to cultivate a taste for further study and reading. This book is intended for use in the earlier grammar grades and to be preliminary to the study of a more advanced work in the higher grades. The author has also kept in mind the fact that the school life of many children is brief, and that all their instruction in Amer ican history must come from a text-book of this kind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States: For the Use of Schools and Academies The utility of history as a branch of school instruction is now so generally admitted, that it is hardly necessary to offer any arguments in its favour; and the necessity of giving the history of our own country the first place, is equally obvious to the reflecting reader. The manner in which this interesting subject should be presented to the mind of the young student, is the only point of inquiry with writers and teachers. In preparing the following history, the author has pursued that course which appeared to him best adapted to unite sound and thorough instruction with entertainment. Beginning with the discovery of the New World, and endeavouring to present the series of events in a clear and connected narrative, rejecting whatever he deemed irrelevant or unimportant, and dwelling chiefly on those striking features of the subject which give it vividness and character, he has brought it down to the present day. Although the considerable period embraced, the multitude of characters and events delineated, and the extent of the field in which they figure, have rendered the preservation of historical unity no easy task, he has laboured to give the work such a degree of compactness as would enable the student to perceive the relation of all it Darts, and to grasp the whole without any very difficult exercise of comprehension. Instead of dividing the history into periods, according to an arbitrary arrangement of events, he has chosen to adopt the ordinary system of chapters, founded on the natural divisions of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States, for Schools and Academies This work is designed as an introductory history. The plan of alternate questions and answers has been adopted, because considered the best arrangement for those pupils who are not sufficiently advanced to judge for themselves in all instances as to what is the correct answer to a question placed at the foot of the page. I have myself often felt the need of a work of this kind in my own school, and it is this need which has prompted me to prepare this history. Great pains have been taken to state accurately all the leading events in the history of our country. The authorities consulted in the preparation of this work are Stephens's History of the United Stat-es, Memoirs of the War in the Southern Department of the United States, by General Henry Lee, Holmes's History of the United States, John Esten Cooke's Life of R. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New School History of the United States of America Eleven years and more have elapsed since the first publication of this text-book. This period has witnessed a series of grave transactions, and a surprising increase of the population, produci tions, and wealth of the country. It seemed indispensable to extend the narrative to the completion of the century since the surrender of the British at Yorktown assured American Independence. To do this, it was necessary to contract the story throughout, so that the volume might be kept within suitable limits. Matters of secondary importance have been omitted, and greater brevity of statement has been introduced where practicable, particularly in the earlier periods and the War of Secession. There is no longer necessity or propriety in treating the late mournful struggle with the same fulness as before. Moreover, the wondrous perspective of time has already diminished the prominence of many events. And has suffered minor details to melt into the haze of the receding landscape. In the present book for Grammar Schools and Junior High Schools, after a brief recapitulation of the story of discovery and early settlement in America, he continues to trace the development Of civilization in our own country and to relate and explain the more important facts, movements, and problems in the origin and growth of the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of History of the United States, for the Use of Schools The work now given to the public, originated in the writer's desire to obtain a book that should lessen the labor of teacher and scholar in the study of History. Owing to the multiplicity of dates, and minute events, as well as the length of the narrative in the histories in general use, the Writer, in common with several of his fellow teachers, had been compelled to go over chapter by chapter, eliminating the most important events, and by means of written synoptical questions, endeavoring to remedy the fault of the larger works. This labor had to be repeated with each succeeding class. It therefore became apparent that it would be easier to write a work which should do away with this really great labor. The work for the sixth grade has been given in a shorter book, entitled Introductory American History. About two-thirds Of that book concern the beginnings in Great Britain and Europe of the civilization which the people of the United States share with other peoples Of European race. The remainder contains descriptions Of the discoveries and early settlements of America, principally in the sixteenth century. This volume for the upper grades Opens with a chapter which repeats briefly the story of early discovery and settlement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States and Its People: For the Use of Schools The proper study of mankind is man, and the real importance of history lies in the light that it throws upon humanity. For this reason liberal attention has been here given to the domestic and social life of the people, their dress, their food, their modes of thought and feeling, and their ways of making a livelihood. The succession of events in minor wars would only weary the attention, but the modes of attack and defense and the character of the arms of the various belligerents are essential facts in the history of man in this New World. And the story of the progress of civilization, as marked by the introduction of new inventions and by changes in modes of living, is of primary importance in any history written in the modern spirit. This is from first to last a schoolbook. No other aim has been in view in its preparation than that of making the best possible teaching book of American history. The length and arrangement of the chapters, the questions, topical and geo graphical studies, and skeleton outlines, as well as the reviews, are all arranged with reference to the needs of teacher and pupil. An effort has here been made to apply to history in a thorough and practical way the great Pestalozzian principle of teaching through the eye. The suggestions for blackboard illustrations.
