Book excerpt: "A book for expectant parents The baby learns more inside the mother's womb than we can imagine-and not only learns, but also feels, memorizes, responds, acts, recognizes, discriminates, and even begins to love. In these pages we will discover the importance of prenatal care related to the baby's psyche and the dyad, which is also developing during this period. The external employment of music can help in creating a stronger bond, showing how the baby communicates with the mother, how she transmits sensations to the child, and how these are recorded emotionally beforehand. This work also examines the effects of music on the baby, as well as how music can help during labor, birth, and the relationship established with both parents. In simple language, this book shares scientific and clinical information about prenatal stimulation, prenatal bonding, and communication between human beings before birth using music therapy"--

Book excerpt: It can safely be said that when literary texts are utilized or adapted by a musician to create a new work of art, it is seldom that a diminished or lessened product results. Rather, such a merging usually enlarges and enhances both text and tune, perhaps significantly changing the message of the original. Discovering exactly what the new form has to offer and how it relates to the text or melody that preceded it is often a daunting task, requiring a close examination of both the author’s and the composer’s intent. The essays in this collection offer an analysis of several adaptations, some successful, some not so successful, and attempt to assess just what the musicians or writers have modified or changed from to the original as they re-form it into an altogether different media. Ranging from Pasternak’s appropriation of Tchaikovsky to Britten’s operatic versions of Billy Budd and the Turn of the Screw, from Celan’s use of fugal technique in his “Todesfuge” to the way that the musicianship of several women writers found voice in their writing, a broad spectrum of collaborations is examined. As readers examine an author’s respect for a long dead musician (Hopkins’ admiration of Purcell) or as they discover how John Harbison worked to transform Fitzgerald’s musicality in The Great Gatsby, it will be evident that musical adaptations often provide a richness that the originals did not possess and that the potential for greatness is heightened when the arts intersect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nominated for three Academy Awards in 1974, including Best Picture and Best Sound, Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation is regarded as the archetypal achievement in weaving together a balanced blend of dialogue, cinematography, sound effects, and music. For the film, composer David Shire created a score that challenged preconceptions of the music’s function within film. Featuring a jazz-infused piano score with pioneering excursions into electroacoustic techniques, Shire’s music provides depth and meaning to the soundtrack by establishing a musical/narrative metaphorical correlation that traces the main character’s psychological journey. In David Shire’s The Conversation: A Film Score Guide, Juan Chattah draws on extensive interviews with the composer and includes numerous examples from his manuscripts to provide aesthetic and critical insights into the compositional process. The book fleshes out a multifaceted framework that reveals layers of meaning that permeate the score, delving into David Shire’s life and musical upbringing to trace the development of his compositional techniques. The author also investigates the film’s critical and historical contexts and ultimately presents a detailed analysis of the complete soundtrack to the film. Proposing an innovative analytical methodology that intersects semiotics and cognitive psychology, this volume offers a unique insight into the film and its music. As such, David Shire’s The Conversation: A Film ScoreGuide will be of interest to film scholars, music scholars, and fans of the composer’s work.

Book excerpt: Author Ivy Shih Leung shares her not-so-perfect road to motherhood in this book that is part memoir and part self-help guide, reflecting lessons learned in the form of helpful tips and information to empower readers on the biological and sociological roots behind postpartum depression (PPD). She also seeks to raise awareness of the myths of motherhood and the stigma of PPD that contribute to the silent suffering of many mothers, as well as the importance of adequate social support in the early postpartum weeks. A culmination of Ivys frightening PPD journey and her emergence from it with a passion to learn more about perinatal mood disorders, this book is fueled with passion to help other women and their families, anger from the unnecessary suffering Ivy went through from the lack of information available to the public about PPD, her doctors ignorance and lack of sensitivity, and public remarks like, There is no such thing as a chemical imbalanceall of which shows theres still a long way to go in terms of educating the public about an illness that is suffered by one in eight new mothers. With side effects that include shame, helplessness, and despair at a time that is supposed to be one of the happiest in a womans life, Ivy wants to help fellow PPD advocates get the message out that PPD is not a mind-over-matter thing, as those who dont know any better tend to believe. PPD is an illness that must be taken seriously. We must all remember that the health of the family unit depends on the mothers well-being. Ivy Shih Leungs voice as a storyteller is strong, loud, and clear. Ivy is a survivor of postpartum depression, and through the written words on each page you can hear her roar.
