Ben hid while his cousin was gunned down by Jamie Charles, a notorious member of the Jamaican posse. A stray bullet killed Ben’s grandma. Ben held a gun but did not open fire. Ben had been a tagalong with the Fifeville Crew but was never a hardcore gangster. After the untimely death of his beloved ones, he decided that he would have nothing to more to do with gangs of the gangster lifestyle. He found out that a life outside the gang was every bit as trying as one within it. He met Moisha (Mo), at a party one night, and he and she got married, brought two children into the world (twins, Esau [Saw] and Jacob [Jay]), and tried to make a good life for them all in the same house that Ben had grown up in, in the same neighborhood where his relatives had been murdered—on the Corner of Fifth and Dice Streets in Charlottesville, Virginia. Ben decided that he would elicit change in Fifeville from gangs, dope, and violence by being a living example showing that anyone could have a good life without succumbing to criminal activities. But the crime around Ben and his family became a ravenous beast that consumed Ben and Mo’s firstborn son, Saw. That murder turned Ben’s life upside down. Mo left him and took his remaining son with her. He ultimately lost the house he tried to cling to. He lost his job, and he temporarily lost his mind. Mo’s love was the balm that healed his soul. He came to himself after talking to his friend Harry, an ex-con and ex-gang member. The narrative ends with Mo, Ben, and Jay, clinging to one another vowing to pick up the pieces and start over. This novel brings to life many of the hidden facts about drug dealing and gangbanging and how these helped ruin and destroy Fifeville.

The inquiry unfolds in a series of fifteen case studies, which range in focus from early modern Italy to eighteenth century China. At the heart of each study is a shared definition of practical knowledge, that is, knowledge needed to obtain a certain outcome, whether that be an artistic or mechanical artifact, a healing practice, or a mathematical result. While the content of practical knowledge is widely variable, this study shows that all practical knowledge is formally equivalent in following a defined workflow, as reflected in a construction procedure, a recipe, or an algorithm. As explored in the volume’s fifteen contributions, there are three levels at which structures of practical knowledge may be understood and examined. At the most immediate level, there are the individual workflows that encompasses practical knowledge itself. Probing further, it is possible to examine the structure of practical knowledge as it is externalized and codified in texts, drawings, and artifacts such as models. Finally, practical knowledge is also related to social structures, which fundamentally determine its dissemination and evolution into new knowledge structures. The social structures of professionals and institutions represent the critical means by which practical knowledge takes form. These actors are the agents of codification, and by means of selection, appropriation, investment, and knowledge development, they determine the formation of new structures of practical knowledge. On a more abstract level, the creation of new knowledge structures is understood as constituting the basis for the further development of scientific knowledge. Rich in subject matter and incisive in the theory it lays out, this volume represents an important contribution to the history of science and epistemology. Individually, the fifteen case studies – encompassing the history of architecture, mining, brewing, glass production, printing, ballistics, mechanics, cartography, cosmology and astronomy – are replete with original research, and offer new insights into the history of science. Book excerpt: Founded in 1769 as a new port town on JamaicaAEs north coast, Falmouth expanded dramatically in the decades around 1800 as it supported the rapidly expanding sugar production of Trelawney and neighboring parishes. Many of the surviving buildings in Falmouth are the townhouses and shops of the planters and merchants who benefitted from the wealth of sugar. That same community also built a major Anglican church and a courthouse, both of which still survive and remain in use. In those same years, the town hosted a growing free-black population and this community also left its mark on the historic town. In 1894, Falmouth received an extraordinary gift from the British crown in the form of the Albert George Market, at once a symbol of persistent colonialism, a shelter for the ancient Sunday markets, and a symbol of modernism in the form of its vast cast iron design. Monuments in the city from the twentieth century include an extraordinary round Catholic church and an impressively Modernist school wing. With little investment through the twentieth century, the town was entirely re-conceptualized in the opening years of the twenty-first century with the construction of a vast cruise ship terminal. Spanning from the foundation of the town in 1769 to the opening of the cruise ship terminal in 2008, this book explores the wide range of architecture built by Jamaicans and others in the making of this extraordinary town.
