Download or read book A Most Dreadful Earthquake written by Dorothy Fowler and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book, based on the previously unpublished correspondence of a young San Francisco woman describing the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, graphically describes the sights of the city and gives details of everyday life in the chaos of those first days. Sarah Phillips' letters tell of walking a circuitous route of several miles in search of her mail, cooking in the streets for fear of fire, and sleeping outside for fear of aftershocks. In the second half of the book, CGS member Dorothy Fowler leads the reader through an investigation using classic genealogy methods to identify the relatives and friends Sarah identified only by their initials. This book is not only an exciting "you are there" account, it is also, as one reviewer wrote, "a Baedeker to genealogy research."

Download or read book The Great Quake written by Henry Fountain and published by Crown Publishing Group (NY). This book was released on 2017 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 27, 1964, at 5-36 p.m., the biggest earthquake ever recorded in North America--and the second biggest ever in the world, measuring 9.2 on the Richter scale--struck Alaska, devastating coastal towns and villages and killing more than 130 people in what was then a relatively sparsely populated region. In a riveting tale about the almost unimaginable brute force of nature, New York Times science journalist Henry Fountain, in his first trade book, re-creates the lives of the villagers and townspeople living in Chenega, Anchorage, and Valdez; describes the sheer beauty of the geology of the region, with its towering peaks and 20-mile-long glaciers; and reveals the impact of the quake on the towns, the buildings, and the lives of the inhabitants. George Plafker, a geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey with years of experience scouring the Alaskan wilderness, is asked to investigate the Prince William Sound region in the aftermath of the quake, to better understand its origins. His work confirmed the then controversial theory of plate tectonics that explained how and why such deadly quakes occur, and how we can plan for the next one.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Phi Alpha Theta Best Subsequent Book Award A Los Angeles Times Book Prize Finalist The captivating and definitive account of the Great Lisbon Earthquake--the most consequential natural disaster of modern times. On All Saints’ Day 1755, tremors from an earthquake measuring approximately 9.0 or perhaps higher on the magnitude scale swept furiously toward Lisbon, then one of the wealthiest cities in the world and the capital of a vast global empire. Within minutes, much of the city lay in ruins. A half hour later, a giant tsunami unleashed by the quake smashed into Portugal’s coastline and barreled up the Tagus River, carrying countless thousands out to sea. To complete Lisbon’s destruction, a hellacious firestorm then engulfed the city’s shattered remains, killing thousands more and incinerating much of what the earthquake and tsunami had spared. Drawing on a wealth of new sources, the latest scientific research, and a sophisticated grasp of European history, Mark Molesky gives us the gripping, authoritative account of the Great Lisbon Earthquake disaster and its impact on the Western world—including descriptions of the world’s first international relief effort, the rise of a brutal, yet modernizing, dictatorship in Portugal, and the effect of the catastrophe on the spirit and direction of the European Enlightenment.

Book Synopsis The History and Philosophy of Earthquakes by : Member of the Royal Academy of Berlin
Download or read book The History and Philosophy of Earthquakes written by Member of the Royal Academy of Berlin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aftershocks of the devastating Lisbon earthquake of 1755 were not only physical: the scientific investigations undertaken in its wake formed the basis of the science of seismology. Published in 1757, the present work is, in the words of its presumed editor, John Bevis (1695-1771), 'a repertory of all that has been written of earthquakes and their causes', and includes several recent papers published by the Royal Society. At the time, scientists suggested subterranean fires or electrical shocks in the atmosphere as possible causes of earthquakes. This reissue also incorporates a brief 1760 work by John Michell (1724/5-93), which uses Bevis' collection as a source and suggests that earthquakes were caused by seismic waves through the earth: it was one of the first to propose that tsunamis were the result of undersea earthquakes. Both these works rank as important steps in the developing understanding of one of nature's most destructive phenomena.
