Book excerpt: Meditations (Medieval Greek: Τὰ εἰς ἑαυτόν, romanized: Ta eis heauton, literally "things to one's self") is a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD, recording his private notes to himself and ideas on Stoic philosophy. Marcus Aurelius wrote the 12 books of the Meditations in Koine Greek as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. It is possible that large portions of the work were written at Sirmium, where he spent much time planning military campaigns from 170 to 180. Some of it was written while he was positioned at Aquincum on campaign in Pannonia, because internal notes tell us that the first book was written when he was campaigning against the Quadi on the river Granova (modern-day Hron) and the second book was written at Carnuntum. It is unlikely that Marcus Aurelius ever intended the writings to be published and the work has no official title, so "Meditations" is one of several titles commonly assigned to the collection. These writings take the form of quotations varying in length from one sentence to long paragraphs.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shrine of Silence: A Book of Meditations What then could afford a more delightful surprise than to find the book instantly called for, and three editions in two years required to satisfy the demand. Those who scan these pages for discursive trea tises, for long drawn out contemplations or argu ments, will surely be disappointed. The author has but one object in presenting these writings to the world. That object is to strive to arouse a thoughtful mood in the reader, coupled with an immediate awakening of the higher spiritual forces of his nature. To some the thoughts may seem to be radical disruptive, disorganizing, iconoclastic. But not if they read the spirit of the author into the lines. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ministry of Jesus, Meditations for Six Months In this little volume I have proposed for meditation the chief miracles, parables, and other incidents and discourses in the Public Life of our Lord. At the head of each meditation I have indicated the passage from the Gospels on which it is based. But lest some should find it inconvenient to refer to it, I have given in each case a short summary of the passage. In the order of events I have followed Father Coleridge's Vitae Vita Nostra, and in matters of interpretation I have for the most part kept close to Maldonatus' Commentary on the Gospels. These Meditations are calculated to fill up just half the year. Any one commencing them after the octave of Corpus Christi will find that they will carry him on to the beginning of Advent or thereabouts. I have not attempted to give any rules respecting preparatory prayer, or good resolutions at the end, but I would remind the reader that if nothing can prosper without the help of God, least of all can meditations be made successfully unless His grace be given, and that the test of a good meditation is not mere pious thoughts or affections, but the practice during the day of the virtues pondered over in the morning meditation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A COMPANION TO MARCUS AURELIUS Considered the last of the “Five Good Emperors,” Marcus Aurelius ruled the Roman Empire from ad 161 until his death in 180 – yet his influence on philosophy continues to resonate in the modern age through his Meditations. A Companion to Marcus Aurelius presents the first comprehensive collection of essays to explore all essential facets relating to contemporary Marcus Aurelius studies. Featuring contributions from top international scholars in relevant fields, initial readings provide an overview of source material by addressing such topics as manuscript transmission, historical written sources, archaeological evidence, artifacts, and coins. Readings continue with state-of-the-art discussions of various aspects of Marcus Aurelius – his personal biography; political, cultural, and intellectual background; and aspects of his role as emperor, reformer of administration, military leader, and lawgiver. His Meditations are analyzed in detail, including the form of the book, his way of writing, and the various aspects of his philosophy. The final series of readings addresses evolving aspects of his reception. A Companion to Marcus Aurelius offers important new insights on a figure of late antiquity whose unique voice has withstood the centuries to influence contemporary life.
