Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Monograph of the Genera Chaetomium and Ascotricha As a result of a thorough review of the literature one hundred and fourteen species names and fourteen variety names have been found which'have been applied to forms supposedly Chae tomia. In the present revision a considerable number of changes have been made., Names which were first used in connection with good species have been retained, while many others have been listed as synonyms thereto. For reasons given elsewhere, a considerable number have been excluded, and the writer feels that the use of such names should be discontinued. Certain new names representing new forms heretofore unrecognized have been added to the list of known species. Nevertheless according to the best judgment of'the writer, the genus should include not more than twenty-eight species. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... Studies in North American Membracidse. By Edward P. Van Duzee In the present paper I give the results of a systematic study of all the Membracids in my own collection and of such additional material as I could procure from my correspondents. With this material I have been able to recognize a considerable portion of the species published by Say, Fitch and Emmons and most of those of the more recent writers. It is quite possible that some of these determinations of the older species may have to be changed as the result of later studies and the acquisition of fuller material but I believe the most of them will stand as here recognized. A large number of our species were described by Say and Fitch, whose descriptions, especially those of Say, were concise and sufficient, and most of these species have been located with reasonable certainty. Emmons' species published in the Natural History of New York are generally recognizable by the excellent figures he gives while his descriptions are all but worthless. Fairmaire's descriptions are poor but he gives some figures and most of his North American species have been placed with more or less certainty. Of more recent work the best is that of Canon Fowler in the Biologia Centrali Americana. While he touches but few of our species his systematic work on the genera is excellent and it is of much value as supplementing the foundation laid by Stal. Dr. Coding's synopsis of the genera was the best for our fauna published to that time and his later catalogue listed our species as well probably as could then be done, but these papers were of little use in the determination of our species as his descriptions of new forms were poor and he gave no comparative notes to assist in locating the older forms. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biologia Centrali-Americana, Vol. 49: Insecta; Rhynchota, Hemiptera-Homoptera; Vol. II; Part 1, by the Rev. W. W. Fowler, D.Sc., M.A., F. L. S.; Part 2, by Prof. T. D. A. Cockerell Part 1 of this Volume contains Canon Fowler's enumeration of four families of Homoptera - the Membracidae, Cercopidae, T ettigoniidar, and Gyponidre. The material of the Jassidae was entrusted several years ago to a well-known homopterist, who volunteered to prepare an account of them for this work. Unfortunately, nothing has been finished by him, nor have the specimens been returned to us, in spite of repeated applications to that effect. We are therefore compelled to close Volume II. As it stands, the concluding portion of Canon Fowler's contribution having been received in 1903. Twenty-five species of Membracidae and four of Cercopidaa have since been added by other authors to the central-american fauna, the Membracidae mainly by the late G. B. Buckton, either in his 'monograph' (1903) or in a paper published in the Transactions of the Linnean Society [zoology, (2) ix. Pp. 329-338, pls. 21 22 and a list of them is appended on pp. 318 - 322, with some notes by Canon Fowler. For the four families, exclusive of those mentioned in the Supplement, 659 species are enumerated, of which 385 are treated as new, with 42 new genera. Of the twenty-one coloured Plates issued in Volume II., which were all drawn and printed by Mr. E. Wilson, of Cambridge, ten are devoted to the extra ordinary insects belonging to the family Membracidae. Part 2 of this Volume includes the enumeration of the families Aleurodidae and Uoccida: by Professor T. D. A. Cockerell. This section of the subject is separately paged and indexed, and it is illustrated by figures in the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Tunicata, Vol. 2: An Unfinished Monograph All the plates in this volume (except the frontispiece) are photographic reproductions of original drawings by the authors - Plates XXV, XXVIII, XXXII, and L, by Collotype, and all the rest by the half-tone process. Plates XXI, XXVI XXX, XXXIV, XXXVII, XXXVIII, XL, and XLIX are from drawings by Mr. Alder, and the figures are Of the same Size as drawn by him; the rest are from drawings by Mr. Hancock, and the figures are reduced in size, mostly to about one-half. The figures in the text, with the exceptions of figs. 25 - 27, 48, 49, and 82 - 84, are reproduced by the half-tone process from drawings by Mr. Hancock, and nearly all are reduced in size. The figures excepted are photographic reproductions of published figures, 25 and 27 being reduced in size from the originals. The Editor has arranged the figures and treated them in the same way as in Vol. I. He regrets that it has not been found possible to identify all Mr. Alder's figures, owing to the absence of descriptions of his completed plates.
