Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Modern Herculaneum: Story of the New Richmond Tornado This account of the grievous whirlwind which swept over the little city of New Richmond and adjacent country, June 12, 1899, is given as a record of the event in its many phases of detail, because of the importance of the results to individuals affected by it, and in the hope that some benefit may result from its suggestions. The sudden and unprecedented loss of life and property, in proportion to the area swept over and size of population, makes the occasion momentous to our people, and marks a sad turning point in their lives. It is to them a milestone set up unexpectedly in the midst of life's journey, which says: "Behind you is the memory of the breaking up of family circles, and the swallowing up of earthly possessions; before you a renewed struggle for existence and livelihood, always a problem in the natural sequence of life, and now doubly complicated by circumstances and environment for which neither the history nor traditions of this locality can furnish instructive precedent." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to cryptozoology—the quest to identify animals that have not been officially catalogued by science and to place these unknown animals into their proper zoological categories. In this fascinating two-volume encyclopedia, author George M. Eberhart provides a comprehensive catalog of nearly 1,000 cryptids—unknown animals usually reported through eyewitness accounts and not yet described by science. Cryptids are the stuff of folklore, hoaxes, and genuine scientific breakthroughs. There are 400 now-classified cryptids once considered either extinct or pure fantasy. The cryptozoologist's job is to strip away the myth, misidentification, and mystery—and separate fact from fiction. Mysterious Creatures covers everything from dinosaurs and the emala-ntouka, an elephant-killing dinosaur-like animal of central Africa, to searches for the Loch Ness monster, Bigfoot, and other cryptozoological hoaxes. Entries about specific animals include the derivation or meaning of each cryptid's name, its scientific name, variant names, a physical description, behavior, description of tracks, habitat, significant sightings, present status, and possible explanations. Illustrations and photographs accompany many entries. The book also includes resources and references for further information.

Book excerpt: June 12, 1899 was another day in the lives of the vast majority of people on this planet. For one tiny town in the peaceful green savanna prairie in northern Wisconsin, it was a dreadful day that would be etched in the memory of more than one generation. And the effects of that day would linger on in the history of the town even though later inhabitants might not be aware of that earlier history. It was a day the larger part of town blew away in a cataclysmic tornado, or cyclone, as it was then termed. It was the day 117 people were killed, either directly by the cyclone, or trapped in the fires that followed. It was the day that the survivors rose to heroic heights to rescue and care for their wounded, to bury their dead, to gather their resources, and to rebuild their town. Very few people moved away.
