Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a search for the radiative leptonic decays B+ → e?{sub e}? and B+ →?+?{sub?}? using data collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B factory. We fully reconstruct the hadronic decay of one of the B mesons in?(4S) → B+B− and then search for evidence of the signal decay within the rest of the event. This method provides clean kinematic information on the signal's missing energy and high momentum photon and lepton, and allows for a model-independent analysis of this decay. Using a data sample of 465 million B-meson pairs, we obtain sensitivity to branching fractions of the same order as predicted by the Standard Model. We report a model-independent branching fraction upper limit of?(B+ → l+?{sub l}?)
Book Synopsis Model-independent Information on Gamma from B[sup[+-] --] Pi K Decays by :

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of the rates for the hadronic decays B[sup[+-]][yields][pi]K can be used to derive information on the weak phase= arg(V*[sub ub]) in a largely model-independent way. Hadronic uncertainties can be reduced to the level of nonfactorizable contributions to the decay amplitudes that are power-suppressed in[Lambda]/m[sub b] and, in addition, either violate SU(3) flavor symmetry or are doubly Cabibbo suppressed. Various strategies to obtain bounds on and to extract its value with small theoretical uncertainty are described. The potential of B[sup[+-]][yields][pi]K decays for probing physics beyond the Standard Model is also discussed.

Download or read book Introduction to Atmospheric Chemistry written by Daniel J. Jacob and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric chemistry is one of the fastest growing fields in the earth sciences. Until now, however, there has been no book designed to help students capture the essence of the subject in a brief course of study. Daniel Jacob, a leading researcher and teacher in the field, addresses that problem by presenting the first textbook on atmospheric chemistry for a one-semester course. Based on the approach he developed in his class at Harvard, Jacob introduces students in clear and concise chapters to the fundamentals as well as the latest ideas and findings in the field. Jacob's aim is to show students how to use basic principles of physics and chemistry to describe a complex system such as the atmosphere. He also seeks to give students an overview of the current state of research and the work that led to this point. Jacob begins with atmospheric structure, design of simple models, atmospheric transport, and the continuity equation, and continues with geochemical cycles, the greenhouse effect, aerosols, stratospheric ozone, the oxidizing power of the atmosphere, smog, and acid rain. Each chapter concludes with a problem set based on recent scientific literature. This is a novel approach to problem-set writing, and one that successfully introduces students to the prevailing issues. This is a major contribution to a growing area of study and will be welcomed enthusiastically by students and teachers alike.

Book Synopsis Foundations of Data Science by : Avrim Blum
Download or read book Foundations of Data Science written by Avrim Blum and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the mathematical and algorithmic foundations of data science, including machine learning, high-dimensional geometry, and analysis of large networks. Topics include the counterintuitive nature of data in high dimensions, important linear algebraic techniques such as singular value decomposition, the theory of random walks and Markov chains, the fundamentals of and important algorithms for machine learning, algorithms and analysis for clustering, probabilistic models for large networks, representation learning including topic modelling and non-negative matrix factorization, wavelets and compressed sensing. Important probabilistic techniques are developed including the law of large numbers, tail inequalities, analysis of random projections, generalization guarantees in machine learning, and moment methods for analysis of phase transitions in large random graphs. Additionally, important structural and complexity measures are discussed such as matrix norms and VC-dimension. This book is suitable for both undergraduate and graduate courses in the design and analysis of algorithms for data.

Book Synopsis String Theory and M-Theory by : Katrin Becker
Download or read book String Theory and M-Theory written by Katrin Becker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-12-07 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: String theory is one of the most exciting and challenging areas of modern theoretical physics. This book guides the reader from the basics of string theory to recent developments. It introduces the basics of perturbative string theory, world-sheet supersymmetry, space-time supersymmetry, conformal field theory and the heterotic string, before describing modern developments, including D-branes, string dualities and M-theory. It then covers string geometry and flux compactifications, applications to cosmology and particle physics, black holes in string theory and M-theory, and the microscopic origin of black-hole entropy. It concludes with Matrix theory, the AdS/CFT duality and its generalizations. This book is ideal for graduate students and researchers in modern string theory, and will make an excellent textbook for a one-year course on string theory. It contains over 120 exercises with solutions, and over 200 homework problems with solutions available on a password protected website for lecturers at www.cambridge.org/9780521860697.
