Book excerpt: This is the first book in the literature to cover the development and testing practices for liquid rocket engines in Russia and the former Soviet Union.Combustion instability represents one of the most challenging probelms in the development of propulsion engines. A famous example is the F-1 engines for the first stage of the Saturn V launch vehicles in the Apollo project. More than 2000 full engine tests and a vast number of design modifications were conducted to cure the instability problem. This book contains first-hand information about the testing and development practices for treating liquid rocket combustion-instability problems in Russia and the former Soviet Union. It covers more than 50 years of research, with an emphasis placed on the advances made since 1970.The book was prepared by a former R&D director of the Research Institute of Chemical Engineering, NIICHIMMASH, the largest liquid rocket testing center in the world, and has been carefully edited by three well-known experts in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data on coaxial jet mixing and combustion developed during a ten-week test program are presented along with a limited analysis of results. The test was conducted with a rocket motor simulator which generated a fuel-rich primary stream. The combustion of the primary stream was varied systematically through a broad range of conditions, and the exchange processes were observed in a secondary mixing duct by means of wall pressure measurements, thrust measurements, and measurements of heat flux. Photographic observations were made of the primary stream operating as a free jet. Preliminary analysis indicates that the length of duct required for momentum and energy exchange to occur depends primarily upon the secondary air mass flow. A brief discussion is included on the grouping of variables in afterburning problems, and a simplified 'throttling number' parameter is suggested. Also included are the results of a mixing zone computation in which the differential equations of coaxial mixing are solved by a finite difference procedure. Results are presented of calculations made to predict wall pressure profiles that are influenced by the presence of the bluff face of the primary stream blast tube. This analysis covers the flow regime that extends to the length of the primary stream potential core. (Author).

The calculations were carried out for two different cases. In the first case, a rocket engine whose exit pressure is balanced with the ambient pressure of the standard atmosphere of 15,500 ft. is considered. In the second, a rocket engine whose exit pressure is balanced with the ambient pressure of the standard atmosphere at an altitude of 50,000 ft. is considered. (Author).

Book excerpt: Propulsion Re-Entry Physics deals with the physics of propulsion re-entry and covers topics ranging from inductive magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) propulsion systems to launch systems and orbiting maneuvering systems. Problems of re-entry aerodynamics are considered, along with interaction problems in hypersonic fluid dynamics. Comprised of 31 chapters, this volume begins with a detailed account of the quasi-steady adiabatic vaporization and subsequent exothermic decomposition of a pure monopropellant spherical droplet in the absence of free and forced convection. The discussion then turns to results of calculations on MPD machines working in the intermittent and in the continuous mode; inductive plasma accelerators with electromagnetic standing waves; and spherical rocket motors for space and upper stage propulsion. Subsequent chapters focus on pulsed plasma satellite control systems; drag and stability of various Mars entry configurations; hypersonic laminar boundary layers around slender bodies; and effects of an entry probe gas envelope on experiments concerning planetary atmospheres. This book will appeal to students, practitioners, and research workers interested in propulsion re-entry and the accompanying physics.
