Book excerpt: The United States of America is experiencing a demographic change as dramatic as in the early 20th century when thousands of immigrants entered Ellis Island. Ballantyne, Sanderman, and Levy (2008) reported over the past decade that the number of English Language Learner (ELL) students in this country has increased more than 60%. The purpose of this study was to explore this phenomenon from the perspective of the teachers and their perception of their efficacy in educating ELL students. This study, which included 212 educators from three different school districts in rural Missouri, utilized the Teacher Efficacy of Teaching English Language Learners (TETELL) survey. Participants also had the opportunity to share their experiences with ELL students. The study found that teachers expressed the lowest efficacy in the area of instruction, expressing that they had "Some" feelings of efficacy in the areas of academic expectations, interclassroom dynamics, and social cohesion. In the area of teachers' experiences with ELL students, a theme emerged that teachers expressed frustration with the lack of time, resources, and preparation to instruct these ELL students.

Book excerpt: Throughout the United States a dramatic shift in demographics is taking place, similar to the changes of the early 20th century, as thousands of immigrants cross the threshold of Ellis Island (Karathanos, 2009). Undergoing a greater makeover is the culture of classrooms and American teachers who have seen, firsthand, an increase of more than 60% of English language learner (ELL) students over the past decade (Ballantyne, Sanderman, & Levy, 2008). The purpose of this study was to develop a more in-depth understanding as to whether mainstream teachers from a school district located in upstate South Carolina perceived themselves to be able to effectively teach ELLs. The first of two research question addressed by the study asked about the identifiable differences in the perceived levels of self-efficacy of secondary mainstream teachers with ELLs pertaining to classroom culture. The second research question addressed the components of professional development for teachers with diverse classrooms have had the most impact on the classroom cultures that contain diverse learners. -- A mixed methods research design was utilized to conduct the study. Quantitative data was collected and analyzed with the Teaching Efficacy for Teaching the English Language Learner (TETELL) scale (Yough, 2008). Qualitative data was collected using open-ended response questions added to the survey instrument as well as from a focus group of survey participants facilitated by the researcher. This allowed the researcher to gain a more in-depth perception of secondary mainstream teacher’s self-efficacy regarding ELLs.

Book excerpt: Teachers of English language learners (ELLs) are often ill prepared to provide content area instruction tailored to their students' needs. This explanatory mixed method study examined the relationship between 15 ell teachers' multicultural attitudes and use of sheltered instruction (si). The purpose of the study was to ascertain whether teachers' multicultural attitudes influenced their use of si. Data were gathered using a Demographic Questionnaire, Multicultural Efficacy Scale (mes), Classroom Instruction Questionnaire, and semi-structured interviews. A correlational analysis found no statistically significant relationship (I.E., r = -0.34; p = 0.22) between participants' scores on si observations and the mes. A correlational estimate for the four highest si scorers indicated a relationship between the two sets of scores (I.E., r = 0.75; p = 0.25). Qualitative data did not indicate any patterns that might distinguish the high and low siop scorers; however, Aptitude Measurement Interaction may explain the different correlational results. English Language Learners’ academic achievement gap has raised a challenging issue for U.S. educators. A convergent parallel mixed-methods study was conducted to 1) compare English Language learners’ academic achievements (mathematics and English Language Arts [ELA] scores) to non-ELLs’ academic achievements (mathematics and ELA scores) in a one-way Spanish immersion school in the Midwestern United States; 2) examine the impact of using Spanish as an instructional tool on English Language Learners’ (ELLs) academic achievements who are admitted in a Midwestern Spanish language immersion school; 3) investigate how teachers perceive the effectiveness of Spanish language instruction on students’ achievement and more specifically, ELLs; 4) assess the one-way immersion program’s ability to assist ELLs’ performance by using their first language and achieve better academic advancement compared to non-ELLs. The results of this convergent parallel mixed-methods study explained that there was no significant difference between ELLs and non-ELLs of mathematics and ELA scores. ELLs in a one-way immersion school perform similarly to their non-ELLs in measure of mathematics and ELA. Based on the results of this mixed-methods study, all teachers confirmed that it was an excellent idea to use ELLs’ first language as an instructional tool. They insisted that L1 represented a great benefit for ELLs who learn through their L1. Also, ELLs can develop their first language besides acquire English as a second language.

Book excerpt: There is limited research regarding the influence co-teaching and dual-certified instructional models have on English Language Learner (ELL) achievement in a high school setting. National and state data demonstrate these students continue to lag behind in meeting English Language Arts (ELA) learning standards with proficiency and in meeting graduation requirements leading to a rise in ELL drop-out rates. Through a convergent mixed methods case study, data was examined to identify the impacts these instructional models have on ELL academic achievement and teacher perspectives regarding each. Quantitative data and analysis were gathered via the June 2018 and June 2019 New York State English Regents exam scores for 11th grade ELL Emerging-Transitioning leveled students in a large, diverse suburban school in New York State and compared by the instructional model in which they participated. Results indicated no statistically significant difference between instructional model and student achievement as measured by the New York State English Regents exam. Qualitative data were gathered via eight voluntary individual interviews from the participating students' teachers. Qualitative data revealed that academic rigor was retained in all instructional models; that relationship-building between the teachers and students was a significant factor in having a positive influence on students' perseverance, motivation to learn, and self-efficacy; and that all teachers in the study value and participate regularly in professional collaboration to build their professional capacity. Dual-certified teachers' challenges included providing frequent individual feedback to students when class sizes were greater than 15 and adjusting instructional pacing and scaffolding of the ELA content.

Book excerpt: Self-efficacy is an individual's judgment of the relative probability of her or his likely success in attaining desired outcomes (Bandura, 1977). For teachers, efficacy beliefs serve as an assessment of their own abilities to promote student learning. Efficacy beliefs are content-specific and are believed to form early in teachers' professional careers. While studies on teachers' sense of efficacy have examined content areas such as math and science (Mulholland & Wallace, 2001; Riggs & Enochs, 1990), very little research has been conducted to explore the perceived efficacy beliefs of beginning foreign language (FL) teachers. Using a mixed methods approach, this investigation explored factors influencing the teaching efficacy beliefs of FL teachers in a major urban school district in north Texas, as well as the potential relationship between their perceptions of efficacy and professional support. Quantitative data included surveys of FL teachers' efficacy beliefs and perceptions of support. Qualitative data was comprised of case studies, including interviews, observations, and documents collected from four novice FL teachers, all of whom entered the classroom via alternative routes to certification. Cross-case analyses suggest that FL teachers often felt their content area was devalued by administrators, colleagues, and students as a result of its status as a non-tested content area. The efficacy beliefs of the novice FL teachers were influenced in part by contextual factors of their respective schools, including professional isolation as a result of being the only FL teacher on campus, support of colleagues, and the availability of time and resources. Because the four case study participants lacked the benefit of traditional university-based certification, they demonstrated tendencies to rely on their "selected memories," making sense of their role(s) as teacher via the perspective acquired when they were students. Findings of the study suggest that FL teachers often experience "Stepchild Syndrome," marked by professional isolation, a lack of relevant professional development opportunities, and a shortage of pertinent resources for FL teaching. The speculative nature of alternatively certified FL teachers' efficacy beliefs is also examined. The study draws implications for supporting beginning FL teachers, particularly those who enter the profession through alternative routes.
