Book Synopsis Brave Son of Tibet by : David P. Jones
Download or read book Brave Son of Tibet written by David P. Jones and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-04-10 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, access to Tibet was difficult for geographical and political reasons until missionaries pried it open in the nineteenth century. Their reports provided glimpses of those living behind the towering mountains, hidden from the Western world. One of those missionaries, Robert B. Ekvall (1898-1983), stands out as one of the most illustrious and overlooked alumni of Nyack College (now Alliance University) and Wheaton College. He joined the short list of those who contributed significantly to the evangelization of the Tibetan Buddhist nomads of Northeastern Tibet. After serving two decades as a pioneer missionary-anthropologist on the Gansu-Tibetan border of western China, his career in missions suddenly ended. He was thrust into WWII as a captain in the US Army, a combatant, interpreter, military attache, diplomat, and chief interpreter at the Panmunjom Korea armistice talks in 1953. In the late 1950s, he entered the academic world at the University of Washington, Seattle, before retiring in the 1970s. Adventure, bravery, intrigue, tragedy, and sorrow all describe facets of Ekvall's life. Few missionaries can boast of such a varied career.

Download or read book Pioneer in Tibet written by Douglas Wissing and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2015-03-17 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Albert Shelton was a medical missionary and explorer who spent nearly twenty years in the Tibetan borderlands at the start of the last century. During the Great Game era, the Sheltons' sprawling station in Kham was the most remote and dangerous mission on earth. Raising his family in a land of banditry and civil war, caught between a weak Chinese government and the British Raj, Shelton proved to be a resourceful frontiersman. One of the West's first interpreters of Tibetan culture, during the course of his work in Tibet, he was praised by the Western press as a family man, revered doctor, respected diplomat, and fearless adventurer. To the American public, Dr. Albert Shelton was Daniel Boone, Wyatt Earp, and the apostle Paul on a new frontier. Driven by his goal of setting up a medical mission within Lhasa, the seat of the Dalai Lama and a city off-limits to Westerners for hundreds of years, Shelton acted as a valued go-between for the Tibetans and Chinese. Recognizing his work, the Dalai Lama issued Shelton an invitation to Lhasa. Tragically, while finalizing his entry, Shelton was shot to death on a remote mountain trail in the Himalayas. Set against the exciting history of early twentieth century Tibet and China, Pioneer in Tibet offers a window into the life of a dying breed of adventurer.

Book Synopsis Buddhist Missionaries in the Era of Globalization by : Linda Learman
Download or read book Buddhist Missionaries in the Era of Globalization written by Linda Learman and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2004-11-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This insightful volume dispels the common notion that Buddhism is not a missionary religion by revealing Asian Buddhists as active agents in the propagation of their faith. It presents at the same time a new framework with which to study missionary activity in both Buddhist and other religious traditions. Included are case studies of Theravada, Chinese, and Tibetan Buddhist teachers and congregations, as well as the Pure Land, Shingon, Zen, and Soka Gakkai traditions of Japan. Contributors examine both foreign and domestic missions and the activities of emigrant communities, showing the resources and strategies garnered by late-nineteenth- and twentieth-century Buddhists who worked to uphold and further their respective traditions, often under difficult circumstances. Based on anthropological fieldwork and historical research, the essays break new ground and provide better analytical tools for studying mission activity than previously available. They provide instructive comparisons with Anglo-American Protestant missionary thinking and offer insights into the internal dynamics of Sri Lankan and Japanese missions as they make their way in Protestant and Catholic societies. Also included are nuanced studies of two major missionary figures in late twentieth-century Chinese Buddhism and a fascinating look at the present Dalai Lama’s relationships with his devotees and the American government, viewed through an exposition of the abiding tradition within Tibetan Buddhism that combines mission activity with the political goals of exiled lamas. Contributors: Stuart Chandler; Peter B. Clarke; C. Julia Huang; Steven Kemper; Linda Learman; Sarah LeVine; Richard K. Payne; Cristina Rocha; George J. Tanabe, Jr.; Gray Tuttle.
