Book Synopsis The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Retirement Series, Volume 8 by : Thomas Jefferson
Download or read book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Retirement Series, Volume 8 written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-29 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume Eight of the project documenting Thomas Jefferson's last years presents 591 documents dated from 1 October 1814 to 31 August 1815. Jefferson is overjoyed by American victories late in the War of 1812 and highly interested in the treaty negotiations that ultimately end the conflict. Following Congress's decision to purchase his library, he oversees the counting, packing, and transportation of his books to Washington. Jefferson uses most of the funds from the sale to pay old debts but spends some of the proceeds on new titles. He resigns from the presidency of the American Philosophical Society, revises draft chapters of Louis H. Girardin's history of Virginia, and advises William Wirt on revolutionary-era Stamp Act resolutions. Jefferson criticizes those who discuss politics from the pulpit, and he drafts a bill to transform the Albemarle Academy into Central College. Monticello visitors Francis W. Gilmer, Francis C. Gray, and George Ticknor describe the mountaintop and its inhabitants, and Gray's visit leads to an exchange with Jefferson about how many generations of white interbreeding it takes to clear Negro blood. Finally, although death takes his nephew Peter Carr and brother Randolph Jefferson, the marriage of his grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph is a continuing source of great happiness. Book Synopsis Christian Monks on Chinese Soil by : Matteo Nicolini-Zani
Download or read book Christian Monks on Chinese Soil written by Matteo Nicolini-Zani and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contribution of monks to the evangelization of lands not yet reached by the preaching of the Gospel has certainly been remarkable. The specific witness that the monastic community gives is of a radical Christian life naturally radiating outward, and thus it is implicitly missionary. The process of inculturation of Christian monasticism in China required a bold spiritual attitude of openness to the future and a willingness to accept the transformation of monastic forms that had been received. In Christian Monks on Chinese Soil, Matteo Nicolini-Zani highlights the willingness of foreign monks to encounter the cultural and spiritual realities of China and the degree of acceptance by the Chinese of the form of monastic life that was presented to them by the missionaries.

Book Synopsis French Theatre, Orientalism, and the Representation of India, 1770-1865 by : David Hammerbeck
Download or read book French Theatre, Orientalism, and the Representation of India, 1770-1865 written by David Hammerbeck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the French theatricalization of India from 1770 to 1865 and how a range of plays not only represented India to the French viewing public but also staged issues within French culture including colonialism, imperialism, race, gender, and national politics. Through examining these texts and available performance history, and incorporating historical texts and cultural theory, David Hammerback analyses these works to illustrate a complex of cultural representations: some contested Orientalism, some participated in Western colonialist discourses, while some can be placed somewhere between these two markers of ideology in Western culture and the arts. He also assesses the works which participated in shaping the theatrical face of Western hegemony, ones directly participating in Orientalism as delineated by Edward Said and others. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars in theatre, French literature, history and cultural studies.

Book Synopsis Congress Volume Leiden 2004 by : André Lemaire
Download or read book Congress Volume Leiden 2004 written by André Lemaire and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-04-01 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents all the main lectures of the XVIIIth Congress of the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament (IOSOT) held in Leiden (August 2004). It is a very good sample of the main trends and progress of current biblical research on textual criticism (Qumran and Septuagint), biblical archaeology, literary criticism (especially Pentateuch, Joshua, Kings), biblical themes (especially in wisdom literature), as well as about the light thrown on biblical exegesis by current cognitive linguistics. An appendix deals with the connection between world Christianity and the study of the Old Testament. The twenty authors are among the main international figures of current biblical exegesis and their contributions are representative of the study of the Old Testament at the beginning of the third millenium.
