Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps America's best environmental idea was not the national park but the garden cemetery, a use of space that quickly gained popularity in the mid-nineteenth century. Such spaces of repose brought key elements of the countryside into rapidly expanding cities, making nature accessible to all and serving to remind visitors of the natural cycles of life. In this unique interdisciplinary blend of historical narrative, cultural criticism, and poignant memoir, Aaron Sachs argues that American cemeteries embody a forgotten landscape tradition that has much to teach us in our current moment of environmental crisis. Until the trauma of the Civil War, many Americans sought to shape society into what they thought of as an Arcadia--not an Eden where fruit simply fell off the tree, but a public garden that depended on an ethic of communal care, and whose sense of beauty and repose related directly to an acknowledgement of mortality and limitation. Sachs explores the notion of Arcadia in the works of nineteenth-century nature writers, novelists, painters, horticulturists, landscape architects, and city planners, and holds up for comparison the twenty-first century's--and his own--tendency toward denial of both death and environmental limits. His far-reaching insights suggest new possibilities for the environmental movement today and new ways of understanding American history.

Book excerpt: This book is the standard work on the production, distribution and storage of medical literature from the earliest times. This third edition, edited by Alain Besson, is in keeping with the author's original intention and retains the basic structure of the first two editions. A new team of contributors have each provided chapters on their specialized subject to ensure a wide-ranging but detailed study. The opening chapter 'Medical Books before the Invention of Printing' now focuses on the production and transmission of medical manuscripts in the West, instead of giving a shallow treatment to the entire field of manuscript studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students of the history of medicine and of American history in general will welcome this collection of thirty papers originally published in nineteenth-century medical journals and lay publications. Each highlights a specific problem or medical attitude of the period, and together they present an illuminating panorama of the medical profession and of public health in nineteenth-century America. Many of the problems faced by students, practitioners, and patients of the last century are surprisingly similar to those still being encountered today. Dr. Brieger has selected papers that illustrate the issues and developments in medical education, medical practice, surgery, hospitals, hygiene, and psychiatry. They range from Benjamin Rush's "On the Cause of Death in Diseases That Are Not Incurable," to a paper by Robert F. Weir "On the Antiseptic Treatment of Wounds, and Its Results" and an article by Stephen Smith, "New York the Unclean." The final selection, the Announcement of The Johns Hopkins Medical School, stands as a landmark that foretells the beginning of a new era.

Book excerpt: Who was the first to write about a certain disease, diagnose it, and treat it? This book answers those questions for a wide range of diseases, from Abetalipoproteinemia to Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. What were the medical practitioners of previous generations hoping to achieve? What were their patients expecting of them? The answers are found in these quotations. Containing over 3,000 entries, and now updated with more than 450 new quotations, this new edition of ""Medicine in Quotations"" is the most comprehensive collection of its type published in over 30 years. It is much more than a random collection of famous sayings relating to sickness and health, disease and treatment; it is a portrait of medicine throughout recorded history. You will discover how medical concepts and practices have developed and shifted through the millennia, and how many illnesses recognized today were first identified a thousand or more years ago. Quotations are organized by topic, and each is fully referenced, allowing curious readers to return to the original source. Subject and author indices make it easy to find quotations of interest. ""Medicine in Quotations"" is an invaluable resource for writers, speakers, and all those interested in the history of medicine.
