Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 21st century, hybrids (such as hybrid war, hybrid regimes, hybrid cars, and hybrid identities, among others) have become all-pervasive, and the computer term “mashup” has turned into a symbol of hybridity. This book highlights the phenomenon of hybridity and hybridization from a variety of angles and perspectives – in social and cultural practices, education and fiction – and notes the connecting patterns between hybridization in different fields of human endeavour. Perhaps the most important hallmark of our age is the crossover into the virtual. The spread of hybrids in “post-reality” has snowballed due to the Internet and the ease of the web-based dissemination of information and disinformation. New entities, such as fake news, have been put together using collage techniques with the result that make-believe events produce real-life effects. Without the special analysis provided in this book, this non/reality generated to manipulate people is unlikely to be differentiated from authentic stories.

Book excerpt: Indispensable Patterns and Insights for Putting Mashups to Work in Enterprise Environments Using new mashup tools and technologies, enterprise developers can impose their own APIs on everything from Web sites and RSS feeds to Excel and PDF files–transforming a world of content into their own customized informationsource. In Mashup Patterns, Michael Ogrinz applies the concept of software development patterns to mashups, systematically revealing the right ways to build enterprise mashups and providing useful insights to help organizations avoid the mistakes that cause mashups to fail. Drawing on extensive experience building business-critical mashups, Ogrinz offers patterns and realistic guidance for every stage of the mashup development lifecycle and addresses the key issues developers, architects, and managers will face. Each pattern is documented with a practical description, specific use cases, and crucial insights into the stability of mashups built with it. Ogrinz concludes by presenting twelve start-to-finish case studies demonstrating mashup patterns at work in actual enterprise settings. Coverage includes: Understanding the relationships among mashups, portals, SOA, EAI/EII, and SaaS Exploring core mashup activities such as data management, surveillance, clipping, transformation, enrichment, publication, and promotion Optimizing security, privacy, accessibility, usability, and performance Managing mashup development, from planning and governance through integration, testing, and deployment Enhancing basic mashups with search, language translation, workflow support, and other improvements Performing effective load and regression testing Avoiding “anti-patterns” that cause enterprise mashups to fail Also of interest: The companion book, Mashups: Strategies for the Modern Enterprise by J. Jeffrey Hanson (Addison-Wesley), is an indispensable guide to designing, implementing, and debugging an enterprise mashup, offering sample code to illustrate key concepts.

Book excerpt: A new theory of moral and aesthetic value for the age of remix, going beyond the usual debates over originality and appropriation. Remix—or the practice of recombining preexisting content—has proliferated across media both digital and analog. Fans celebrate it as a revolutionary new creative practice; critics characterize it as a lazy and cheap (and often illegal) recycling of other people's work. In Of Remixology, David Gunkel argues that to understand remix, we need to change the terms of the debate. The two sides of the remix controversy, Gunkel contends, share certain underlying values—originality, innovation, artistic integrity. And each side seeks to protect these values from the threat that is represented by the other. In reevaluating these shared philosophical assumptions, Gunkel not only provides a new way to understand remix, he also offers an innovative theory of moral and aesthetic value for the twenty-first century. In a section called “Premix,” Gunkel examines the terminology of remix (including “collage,” “sample,” “bootleg,” and “mashup”) and its material preconditions, the technology of recording. In “Remix,” he takes on the distinction between original and copy; makes a case for repetition; and considers the question of authorship in a world of seemingly endless recompiled and repurposed content. Finally, in “Postmix,” Gunkel outlines a new theory of moral and aesthetic value that can accommodate remix and its cultural significance, remixing—or reconfiguring and recombining—traditional philosophical approaches in the process.

Book excerpt: This proceedings volume includes the full research papers presented at the First Int- national Conference on Mobile Computing, Applications, and Services (MobiCASE) held in San Diego, California, during October 26-29, 2009. It was sponsored by ICST and held in conjunction with the First Workshop on Innovative Mobile User Inter- tivity (WIMUI). MobiCASE highlights state-of-the-art academic and industry research work in - main topics above the OSI transport layer with an emphasis on complete end-to-end systems and their components. Its vision is largely influenced by what we see in the consumer space today: high-end mobile phones, high-bandwidth wireless networks, novel consumer and enterprise mobile applications, scalable software infrastructures, and of course an increasingly larger user base that is moving towards an almost a- mobile lifestyle. This year's program spanned a wide range of research that explored new features, algorithms, and infrastructure related to mobile platforms. We received submissions from many countries around the world with a high number from Europe and Asia in addition to the many from North America. Each paper received at least three in- pendent reviews from our Technical Program Committee members during the Spring of 2009, with final results coming out in July. As a result of the review process, we selected 15 high-quality papers and complemented them with six invited submissions from leading researchers, reaching the final count of 21 papers in the program.

Book excerpt: The Internet has transformed higher education by changing the way universities and colleges teach students. As a result, many institutions are struggling to understand how the next generation of Internet technologies, including Web 2.0, multimedia, virtual presence, gaming, and the proliferation of mobile devices, will impact their students and infrastructures. .edu: Technology and Learning Environments in Higher Education discusses how higher education institutions can use these technologies to enable learning environments. In the future, students will have complete access to any higher education resource, including expert scholars, lectures, content, courseware, collaborative dialogues, information exchanges, hands-on learning, and research - no matter where they are located. If fully enabled, this new learning environment will blur the lines between on- and off-campus experiences and remove barriers to learning and research - greatly improving the quality of education for students globally.

Digital piracy, audio mashups, The Onion and Wikipedia are all examples of transgression in our current mediascape. And as digital age transgression becomes increasingly essential, it also becomes more difficult to define and protect. The contributions in this collection are organized into six sections that address the use of new technologies to alter existing cultural messages, the incorporation of technology and alternative media in transformation of everyday cultural practices and institutions, and the reuse and repurposing of technology to focus active political engagement and innovative social change. Bringing together a variety of scholars and case studies, Transgression 2.0 will be the first key resource for scholars and students interested in digital culture as a transformative intervention in the types, methods and significance of cultural politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The art of mashup music, its roots in parody, and its social and legal implications. Parody needn’t recognize copyright—but does an algorithm recognize parody? The ever-increasing popularity of remix culture and mashup music, where parody is invariably at play, presents a conundrum for internet platforms, with their extensive automatic, algorithmic policing of content. Taking a wide-ranging look at mashup music—the creative and technical considerations that go into making it; the experience of play, humor, enlightenment, and beauty it affords; and the social and legal issues it presents—Parody in the Age of Remix offers a pointed critique of how society balances the act of regulating art with the act of preserving it. In several jurisdictions, national and international, parody is exempted from copyright laws. Ragnhild Brøvig contends that mashups should be understood as a form of parody, and thus be protected from removal from hosting platforms. Nonetheless, current copyright-related content-moderation regimes, relying on algorithmic detection and automated decision making, frequently eliminate what might otherwise be deemed gray-area content—to the detriment of human listeners and, especially, artists. Given the inaccuracy of takedowns, Parody in the Age of Remix makes a persuasive argument in favor of greater protection for remix creativity in the future—but it also suggests that the content-moderation challenges facing mashup producers and other remixers are symptomatic of larger societal issues.

Book excerpt: Collective intelligence has become an attractive subject of interest for both academia and industry. More and more conferences and workshops discuss the impact of the users‘ motivation to participate in the value creation process, the enabling role of leading-edge information and communication technologies and the need for better algorithms to deal with the growing amount of shared data. There are many interesting and challenging topics that need to be researched and discussed with respect to knowledge creation, creativity and innovation processes carried forward in the emerging communities of practice. COLLIN is on the path to become the flagship conference in the areas of collective intelligence and ICT-enabled social networking. We were delighted to again receive contributions from different parts of the world including Australia, Europe, Asia, and the United States. Encouraged by the positive response, we plan COLLIN 2012 to be held next year end of August at FernUniverstität in Hagen. In order to guarantee the quality of the event, each paper went through a doubleblind review process. The reviews concentrated on originality, quality and relevance of the paper topic to the symposium. In addition, we invited a few renowned experts in the field to contribute to the success of the symposium with outstanding papers reporting on their most recent research. Our special thanks go to the authors for submitting their papers, to the international program committee members, and to numerous reviewers who did an excellent job in guaranteeing that the papers in this volume are of very high quality.

You’ll not only encounter interesting code samples, but also see how to combine these examples with the Microsoft collaboration platform’s services. The book’s solutions focus on using Visual Studio 2008 and its built-in Office development tools to construct the user interface layer. And solutions can interact with SharePoint as a service provider, taking advantage of SharePoint’s many collaboration features like document repositories, collaboration sites, and search functions. This book is unique because it starts with challenges that end users deal with every day when using the Microsoft collaboration platform to support business processes. The solutions are presented as hypothetical business challenges of a fictional company. By presenting the examples in this context, author Ed Hild makes it easier to relate to the challenges and solution value. The goal of these examples is to build applications that apply the benefits of the Office desktop interface to the richness of SharePoint collaboration features. This book will help you develop real-world solutions to complex business problems and challenges.
