Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manuscript of Jerome's De Viris Illustribus Belonging to the General Theological Seminary in New York The ms. Itself bears no date. It is carefully written in a Clear minus cule hand of the post-caroline period. The letters are full and round and show no trace of rigidity or angularity. The form of the letters and the general character of the writing indicate that Q was written towards the end of the rath century. Other palaeographical matters of detail, such as the abbreviations and contractions used, the fre quent joining of the preposition to the word governed by it, e without the cedilla for de and oe, i with a stroke over it in places where no con fusion with other letters could arise, accord with this view of the date. The script of Q is very beautiful and compares favorably with some of the handsomest writing of the Middle Ages.4 The letters are round and graceful in the Italian style, and the codex may have been written in Italy or southern France. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most learned of the Latin Fathers, Saint Jerome had an eventful life, spending time as a hermit, becoming a priest, serving as secretary to Pope Damasus I and later establishing a monastery at Bethlehem. His most ambitious achievement was his Latin translation of the Bible, the Vulgate, based on a Hebrew version, rather than the Septuagint. He believed that mainstream Rabbinical Judaism had rejected the Septuagint as invalid scriptural texts, due to Hellenistic mistranslations. Jerome’s numerous biblical, ascetical, monastic and theological works went on to have a profound influence in the early Middle Ages. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the ancient world, with both English translations and the original Latin texts. Download or read book Satiric Advice on Women and Marriage written by Warren S. Smith and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2010-02-24 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advice on sex and marriage in the literature of antiquity and the middle ages typically stressed the negative: from stereotypes of nagging wives and cheating husbands to nightmarish visions of women empowered through marriage. Satiric Advice on Women and Marriage brings together the leading scholars of this fascinating body of literature. Their essays examine a variety of ancient and early medieval writers' cautionary and often eccentric marital satire beginning with Plautus in the third century B.C.E. through Chaucer (the only non-Latin author studied). The volume demonstrates the continuity in the Latin tradition which taps into the fear of marriage and intimacy shared by ancient ascetics (Lucretius), satirists (Juvenal), comic novelists (Apuleius), and by subsequent Christian writers starting with Tertullian and Jerome, who freely used these ancient sources for their own purposes, including propaganda for recruiting a celibate clergy and the promotion of detachment and asceticism as Christian ideals. Warren S. Smith is Professor of Classical Languages at the University of New Mexico.
