Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987, The United States in the World-Economy is a major textbook survey of the rise of the United States within the world-economy and the causes of its relative decline. With the USA being the dominant state in the contemporary world-economy, it is vital to understand how it got to where it is and how it responds to global economic crises. Professor Agnew emphasises the divergent experiences of different regions within the USA and in so doing provides a significant 'new' regional geography, tracing the historical evolution of the world-economy and assessing the contemporary impact of the world-economy upon and within it. No treatment prior to this work covered the subject with equivalent breadth and theoretical acuity and the guiding politico-economic framework provides a coherent radical perspective within which the author undertakes specific regional and historical analysis. The United States in the World-Economy will prove required reading for numerous courses in regional geography, area studies and the geography of the United States.

Book excerpt: This collection takes on the call issued by reviewers of The American Way for a critical application of Carville Earle's framework to more geographical examples of political and economic shifts in America's past. The essays illustrate changes in U.S. settlement, development, and political structure through the lens of the restructuring of the American economy and society over approximately fifty year cycles of crisis and recovery. They demonstrate the extension of American's sphere of influence outside of the United States as a larger scalar shift, and they underscore the utility of geography in answering very local questions concerning questions of poorly documented settlement histories. Focusing on the geographic responses to periodic cycles of crisis and recovery and the more general underlying intertwining of geography and history, Geography, History, and the American Political Economy is an incisive demonstration of how the constant restructuring of American politics and economy occurs within spatial and historical constructs.

Book excerpt: Technological progress has led to rapidly declining costs for transport and communication; trade integration via NAFTA or the EU reduces the costs of economic distance even further. This can have substantial consequences for the distribution of industries between peripheral and core regions. Based on recent advances in modeling economic geography, this study shows the forces that influence the degree of economic concentration in the course of economic development and globalization. The models are based on trade costs and economies and diseconomies of scale, all of which are found to be empirically relevant factors for spatial concentration. The study finds that in early stages of economic development, rising GDP levels and lower trade costs increase spatial concentration, while they decrease concentration in later stages, so that it peaks at per capita incomes of around US $12,000. Moreover, the historic degree of spatial concentration is found to have a long-lasting influence in the cross section of countries under study.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Source Book for the Economic Geography of North America There has been a notable increase in recent years in the number of universities and colleges which offer instruction in geography, and especially in the numbers of students who elect courses in the subject. As a result, instructor have been confronted by the difficult problem of providing source materials for the use of their students. At the University of Chicago this problem has been especially critical in the course on the "Economic Geography of North America." Source materials in this field are scattered widely through government reports, magazines, and other publications, of which it has been impossible to provide a sufficient number of copies to meet the needs of large groups of students. Furthermore, much of the original literature is unrelated to a geographic discussion, so that it is impracticable to refer beginning students to it. It is hoped that this book will furnish material for an introductory study of the geography of North America and that it will effectively introduce students to the literature of the subject. At the University of Chicago the course on the "Economic Geography of North America" is the third of three units which comprise the first year's work in geography. The preceding units are "Elements of Geography," which is an analysis of the elements of the physical environment in their relation to life, and "Economic and Commercial Geography," which is organized on a commodity basis. As given here, the course on North America is organized on a regional basis and serves as an introduction to regional geography. It is followed by courses on the other major regions of the world. Pedagogically, it is intended that this course constitute a transition from the earlier courses in which much use is made of a text to later courses without texts, in which the lecture method is employed more or less extensively. As the limitations imposed by a small volume made it impossible to reproduce most of the articles in full, it is hoped that instructors using the book will consult the original sources and, when practicable, refer their students to them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We review historical patterns of economic geography' for the United States from the colonial period to the present day. The analysis is framed in terms of two geographic scales: regions and cities. The compelling reason for studying geographic areas of different scales is that models that explain the location of economic activities at one scale many not apply to other scales. We consider the process of settling the frontier'; the development of national markets in goods and factors and, more generally, the convergence (and divergence) of regional economies; the growth of cities and the relationship between urbanization and trends in aggregate economic structure, such as industrialization; and changes in the internal spatial structure of cities
