Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archives of Otology, 1891, Vol. 20: Edited in English and German; January The objects and form of the archives will undergo no change. We intend to publish, as heretofore, original articles on all topics connected with the theory and practice of aural surgery, Viz., normal and pathological, human and comparative anatomy, physiology, pathology, and therapeutics of the auditory organ. No personal restriction whatsoever is imposed on any author, providing his contribution be instructive, scientifically presented, and not unnecessarily lengthy. We expect, however, that those who favor us with their papers will not publish them, as such, in any other periodical. Illustrations can, to a certain degree, be executed at the expense of the archives; for costly ones the authors will be requested to bear a share of the expense. All drawings should be on separated papers, and their places of insertion indicated in the mss. Clean pen and ink drawings, double the size desired to be put in the text, are particularly welcome. Besides papers on the organ of hearing proper, we solicit also communications on such of the neighboring parts as are in physiological or pathological relation with the ear in particular the nasal, pharyngeal, and cranial cavities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles of Otology: A Text-Book for Medical Students The complaint has frequently been made - and rightly, as I believe - that the larger treatises on otology contain a great deal of material which, however useful it may be to men who propose to treat diseases of the ear, is practically of little value to medical students, of whom a knowledge of only the first principles of this branch of surgery is required for graduation. For such readers, therefore, a much smaller work - one that treats only of the fundamental facts and theories relating to the anatomy, physiology, pathology, and therapeutics of the ear - should amply suffice. The present little book is the outcome of an attempt to supply such a manual for the exclusive use of undergraduate medi cal students. Albert H. Buck. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Diseases of the Ear IN the present volume the essentially important advances made in otology since the issue of the last edition have been duly noted. The author takes this opportunity of thanking Dr. William Hill, his colleague in the Aural Department at St. Mary's Hospital, for his invaluable help in the revision of the work, Dr. Cagney, for his section on the use of the constant or galvanic current, and Mr. J. J. Clarke, Pathologist at St. Mary's, for the great trouble and care with which he has executed the new drawings, most of them from specimens in the Museum of St. Mary's Hospital or from recent dissections. The sale of the three thousand copies comprising the last edition of this work tends to show that treatises on Aural Surgery are needed by the profession, and encourages the author to believe that the labour bestowed upon this new issue will not have been in vain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Otology: For Physicians and Students Having taught otology for twenty-five years, I decided to condense in a text-book all that has developed in the course of years and is worth being retained. This decision was in response to the wish of my disciples, many of whom are now professors of otology. The book is written for physicians and students. Its teachings differ in many respects from the ideas which prevail at present. Distinct advances will be found even outside of the direct clinical domain, in physiology and topography. Physiology gained from a careful study of the changes of the sound conducting and sound-perceiving apparatus and from the analysis of the in uence of those changes upon the function of the organ of hearing. The clinical importance justifies the amount of space devoted to it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
