Book Synopsis Fishery Science and Management by : Warren S. Wooster
Download or read book Fishery Science and Management written by Warren S. Wooster and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is concerned with the role of science in fishery management. While this has traditionally been considered as largely a biological problem with clear biological objectives, close examination suggests that management decisions are largely controlled by political, social and economic considerations, biologically constrained. The biologist now has the task of reducing the uncertainties of the venture rather than determining its priorities or its allocation of benefits. The uncertainties arise in part because of lack of understanding of the ecological systems involved, the limited availability of critical information, and the unpredictability of driving forces. The volume reviews the assumptions and simplifications of fishery models, examines the decision making framework in fishery management, and compares management practices in North America, Japan, and Northern Europe. A compilation of fishery management objectives in international agreements and U.S. laws is included.

Its theme was the application of ecological modelling to environmental management and this book contains the full texts of the three invited papers presented in the five general sessions, plus the final summaries and syntheses of the topics covered during those sessions.
Book Synopsis Resource Management by : Marc Mangel
Download or read book Resource Management written by Marc Mangel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are the proceedings of the Second R. Yorque Workshop on Resource Management which took place in Ashland, Oregon on July 23-25, 1984. The purpose of the workshop is to provide an informal atmosphere for the discussion of resource assessment and management problems. Each participant presented a one hour morning talk; afternoons were reserved for informal chatting. The workshop was successful in stimulating ideas and interaction. The papers by R. Deriso, R. Hilborn and C. Walters all address the same basic issue, so they are lumped together. Other than that, the order to the papers in this volume was determined in the same fashion as the order of speakers during the workshop -- by random draw. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: This important collection of international research on fisheries economics offers a comprehensive source of contemporary research on key topics in the field, as well as presenting the history of how the economic theory of fisheries exploitation has developed. Bringing into focus a wide range of inquiry, this second volume concentrates on extensions, analysis of management agencies and applications. Individual papers examine fundamental issues including, multispecies models, international utilization and recreational fisheries. Fisheries Economics is an invaluable research reference collection for the libraries of academic and other professional economists, as well as an indispensable resource for those studying across the fields of natural resources, fisheries economics and particularly fisheries management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research and development of seafood continues to be productive in terms of new and improved products for both food and non-food purposes. The use of biotechnology, microbiology, computer modeling and advanced analytical techniques has led to improvements in processing and product safety. This recent book provides extensive new information on these developments. The 25 reports were prepared by food scientists specializing in seafood. The reports are well illustrated with numerous schematics and some micrographs. Extensive reference data is provided in tables and graphs.

Download or read book Modeling and Management of Resources under Uncertainty written by Thomas L. Vincent and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vol ume contains the proceedings of the second U. S. -Austral ia workshop on Renewable Resource Management held at the East-West Center, Honolulu, Hawaii, December 9-12, 1985. The workshop was jointly sponsored by the National Science Foundation (USA) and the Department of Science and Technology (Austral ia) under the U. S. -Austral ia Cooperative Science Program. The objective of the workshop was to focus on problems associated with the management of renewable resource systems. A particular emphasis was given to methods for handling uncertain elements whieh are present in any real system. Toward this end, the partiei pants were chosen so that the collective expertise included mathematical modeling, dynamical control/game theory, ecology, and practical management of real systems. Each participant was invited to give an informal presentation in his field of expertise as related to the overall theme. The formal papers (contained in this vo 1 ume) were written after the workshop so that the authors coul d util ize the workshop experience in relating their own work to others. To further encourage this exchange, each paper contained in this volume was reviewed by two other participants who then wrote formal comments. These comments (with author's reply in some cases) are attached to the end of each paper.

Book Synopsis Population Harvesting (MPB-27), Volume 27 by : Wayne M. Getz
Download or read book Population Harvesting (MPB-27), Volume 27 written by Wayne M. Getz and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether in felling trees for wood, rearing insects for biological control, or culling animals for conservation purposes, efficient management of biological systems requires quantitative analysis of population growth and harvesting policies. Aiming to encourage the exchange of ideas among scientists involved in the management of fisheries, wildlife, forest stands, and pest control, the authors of this work present a general framework for modeling populations that reproduce seasonally and that have age or stage structure as an essential component of management strategy. The book represents the first time that examples from such diverse areas of biological resource management have been brought together in a unified modeling framework using the standard notation of mathematical systems theory. In addition, the authors combine a nonlinear extension of Leslie matrix theory and certain linear elements, thereby permitting interesting analytical results and the creation of compact, realistic simulation models of resource systems.
