Book excerpt: Finally, Flora Hyde-Clare has wrest the narrative from Beatrice by finding her own compelling murder mystery to solve. Well, it's not entirely her own because the victim is her cousin's former beau, Mr. Theodore Davies, whose father cruelly separated the young lovers (though not so cruelly, for it left the door open for Bea to woo the Duke of Kesgrave). Bea insists, of course, that the law clerk's death was merely an accident. If only he had not been in the path of that wretched carriage! Oh, but Flora knows that evasive look on her cousin's face. Bea is hiding something. Clearly, Davies had gotten himself entangled in some nefarious business, and Flora is determined to discover the truth despite the danger it puts her in. Or is that because it puts her in danger? After all, any heroine worth her salt must be willing to take on a great deal of personal risk. And Flora has her mind set on being a heroine of the highest order.

Book excerpt: Warren Jenkins Carswell, an unlit cigar clenched between his teeth, was pacing the Oval Office. Seated around his desk were Bruxton Linley, Donald Fallon, Chairman of the National Committee, Vice-President Alston Gordon, and John Stanley, Gordon's Chief of Staff. "The money's flowing to them from all sectors, Mr. President," Fallon was saying. "From individuals, and from both small and large businesses. They've raised almost twenty mil already, and the election's still eleven months off. They've even been making inroads among the rank-and-file members of the Teamster's Union." "What have we raised so far?" Carswell returned to his desk and sat. "We're still paying off our debt from the '94 elections. Six million to go before we break even," Fallon responded bleakly. Carswell's eyes darted from Fallon to Linley and back. "If they keep goin' like this, they'll make big gains in the House." "Might even take over the Senate," Gordon observed dryly. Carswell noted that the blood had drained from Gordon's face. Al's worried. He's been a politician for over thirty years and he expects to be president after I finish my second term. But for that to happen, I have to first win a second term. "Suspenseful novel of international intrigue." -Paul B. Cora, author of Yellowjackets! The 361st Fighter Group in World War II " all the elements of a true thriller-suspense, travel, sex, religious dogma, romance and adventure." -Armin Jaeger

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brilliant, dazzling, never-before-collected nonfiction writings by "one of America's most daring and talented writers" (Los Angeles Times Book Review): Both Flesh and Not gathers fifteen of Wallace's seminal essays, all published in book form for the first time. Never has Wallace's seemingly endless curiosity been more evident than in this compilation of work spanning nearly 20 years of writing. Here, Wallace turns his critical eye with equal enthusiasm toward Roger Federer and Jorge Luis Borges; Terminator 2 and The Best of the Prose Poem; the nature of being a fiction writer and the quandary of defining the essay; the best underappreciated novels and the English language's most irksome misused words; and much more. Both Flesh and Not restores Wallace's essays as originally written, and it includes a selection from his personal vocabulary list, an assembly of unusual words and definitions.

Book Synopsis The Fiction of Relationship by : Arnold Weinstein
Download or read book The Fiction of Relationship written by Arnold Weinstein and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A clear and straightforward discussion of the ways in which literatures and their comparative study must depend upon the problematics of interpersonal and other relations. . . . This study will prove as useful as it is wide-ranging, and indeed, comparative in the good sense."--Mary Ann Caws, Graduate School, City University of New York "Here is a comparatist working at the peak of his powers. . . . Weinstein moves easily from Goethe and Flaubert to Kafka or Joyce or Boris Vian. Locating fictions of relationship `at the heart of both literary criticism and human affairs' and acknowledging his own `distinctly humanistic' concerns, Weinstein writes in an urgent tone and eloquent voice, inflecting the theme of `relationship' in every way: in its surrender to the erotic, its frenzied drive for control of the Other, in its ability to confer identity or eclipse difference. . . . When he couples texts (e.g., William Burrough's Naked Lunch and C. de Laclos's Les liaisons dangereuses), he takes risks that bear brilliant fruit. Exploring famous texts and relatively unknown ones, Weinstein infuses the traditional study of fiction with new energy."--Choice Originally published in 1988. Book Synopsis Beneath the Volcano by : Gregory L. Forth
Download or read book Beneath the Volcano written by Gregory L. Forth and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-16 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beneath the Volcano is the first major account of the Nage, who inhabit the central part of Flores in eastern Indonesia. The book focuses on Nage ideas concerning a variety of spiritual beings and how these influence both ritual practices and ideas about human beings. In exploring these subjects, the author sets out to uncover a classification of spirits. While quite different from taxonomies of natural beings, Nage ways of linking named categories of spirits nevertheless reveal a regular conceptual order. In describing this order, use is made of a version of Dumont's notion of 'encompassment'. Common ideas informing relations between Nage humans and several categories of spirits are further interpreted as instances of a pervasive principle of 'symmetric inversion', according to which human beings are spirits for the spirits.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship by : Jing Zhou
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship written by Jing Zhou and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research-based investigations of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship have the potential to inform each other and enrich our knowledge of each of these areas, particularly with regard to cognitive processes and effective behaviors. Yet, while these research streams have increasingly received a great deal of attention, they have developed largely independently of one another. The Oxford Handbook of Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship addresses the critical need to integrate these three interrelated literatures. The handbook features contributions from the leading scholars in these research areas. As a group, the chapters examine the intersections of these topics to synthesize contemporary research and provide direction and stimulation for further interdisciplinary investigations of organizational creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Book Synopsis Internalism and Externalism in Semantics and Epistemology by : Sanford C. Goldberg
Download or read book Internalism and Externalism in Semantics and Epistemology written by Sanford C. Goldberg and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2007-10-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To what extent are meaning, on the one hand, and knowledge, on the other, determined by aspects of the 'outside world'? Internalism and Externalism in Semantics and Epistemology presents twelve specially written essays exploring these debates in metaphysics and epistemology and the connections between them. In so doing, it examines how issues connected with the nature of mind and language bear on issues about the nature of knowledge and justification (and vice versa). Topics discussed include the compatibility of semantic externalism and epistemic internalism, the variety of internalist and externalist positions (both semantic and epistemic), semantic externalism's implications for the epistemology of reasoning and reflection, and the possibility of arguments from the theory of mental content to the theory of epistemic justification (and vice versa).
Book Synopsis My Experiences with God and his Son, Jesus Christ by : Al Santos
Download or read book My Experiences with God and his Son, Jesus Christ written by Al Santos and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” (Matt 7:13–14 NIV) Join Al Santos on an inspirational and thought-provoking journey, exploring eternal life in heaven and God’s secret wisdom. Be prepared to be challenged, as the journey is not always easy. Contained within these pages is the true word of the Lord, the secret wisdom that will allow a select few to enter heaven. Despite what many Christians are told, living a Christian life, repenting of our sins, and receiving Last Rites are not sufficient to gain believers entry. Eternal life requires more, and God expects more from us. Most Christians have received the spirit of the world, which only recognizes physical realities. In these pages, Santos suggests we learn from an anointed one, “not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words” (1 Cor 2:13 NIV). The secret wisdom of the Lord is exactly that: secret wisdom. It is hard-won, difficult to come by, and may not be attained even by the anointed ones. If we read closely enough, it is there—but the road to it is narrow and fraught with difficulty. If we persevere on that narrow path, we will gain God’s Holy Spirit, the message of truth, and the gospel of our salvation.
